There are so many things I love about this fight. The pacing, music, humor are all fantastic, and of course this is probably the movie's single most important fight, in terms of power scaling the fight between Ip Man and the General at the end of the film, but the thing I love the most is the sheer physical presence the actor who plays Master Jin exudes. Every time he resets for another go, you can just feel his determination to win as opposed to him telling us with the types of over exaggerated facial expressions that can sometimes creep into a fight.

All true. It's beautiful and creative and energetic in the choreography, with excellent pacing and visual sensibility. The Master Jin actor conveys the unwillingness to admit defeat, constantly rising from the latest defeat to try again until he finally concedes that he's overmatched. Even then, he's grudging about admitting defeat, attributing it to style instead of the masterful character of his opponent who knows style is less important than inner strength and skill. The scene has playful moments mixed with exciting martial arts action, like a Jackie Chan scene but with more substance to the creativity.
@thelegittaco9742 жыл бұрын
Fun fact about Wing Chun: When Master Jin called Wing Chun a “woman’s martial art,” he was referring to the founders of Wing Chun, who were both women. Some legends say one of the two lived in a Shaolin temple for a while, and when she discovered that the second founder was about to be forced into marriage with a local warlord, she adapted the Shaolin arts into something more suitable for women, in order to help the second lady fend off the warlord’s sexual advances. In fact, if I remember correctly, the “creator” of the two was called Yong Chun in Mandarin, or Wing Chun in Cantonese

@@asoka7752 It is true as what Taco said. Ng Mui (Nun at the shaolin temple who created this form of martial arts) found her inspiration after witnessing a fight between a stork and large rodent where the stork was able to repel the rodent’s attacks by using its wings and legs to attack and defend simultaneously. She named her new style Wing Chun (which translates as ‘everlasting springtime’) after one of her top students, Yim Wing Chun, who used it to defend herself against an unwanted suitor.

You're correct. It's impressive he managed to dodge it. I personally like Jin's northern martial art style.
@thevegastan Жыл бұрын
Yes you’re correct. It’s the bottom finisher and also the connector to the more aggressive style. When Master Ip folded his sleeves, he transitioned into Biu Jee opening, the deadly style, and then when he missed the following strike that Master Jin dodged, you can see Ip Man used the kick momentum to transition into the wooden dummy stance, the Muk Yan Zhong, in which he then disarms Jin’s strike and chain punch 🤛🏻 him into oblivion and finishing him off with the blow to the jaw. That jaw kick isn’t always possible with the wooden dummy, but being a master of a martial art, I think it suffices that Master Ip was trying to diffuse the fight as soon as possible.

From what my perspective, you can see Ip Man does a gracefully fighting pose while Master Jin does a wildly fighting pose. It's pure, self defense fighting style vs brute strength fighting style. But in the end, Ip Man not just beat him but he humiliated his opponent with a simple object, a feather duster.

@Meta Man Having watched this film recently I realised how ip man beat the northerner and why the other Kung fu masters lost to the invader. Those masters spent the majority of their time and energy in their students which means they had less time to perfect or tweak their own skills and conditioning. At this point in the film, ip man is still a private master and does not have any students under his regime. He self-trains within the confines of his home. Having dedicated much of his time to the art he has become bored and is secretly seeking out a challenge. Notice before this fight he’d invite certain respected masters to his abode for a spar at his own convenience. On the other hand, the northerner forcefully entered ip mans home without permission demanding a fight from the great master. It’s with this effect that ip man graciously accepts the challenge and allows himself to express his unique distinction with the art. After handing his ass to him, ip man humbly tells the northerner that the reason for his defeat was because of his ego, his mindset. Not down to skills alone. “A wise king never seeks out war but must always be ready for it.”

Donnie's Ip Man movies are incredibly well made. That goes double for the first one. It's too bad they don't showcase Donnie Yen's abilities as a martial artist. While that may sound paradoxical to some, but you should've seen the man back in the 1980's: the stuff he did (and the quality, sharpness he did it with) - was both borderline unbelievable. Not to mention his signature: the spectacular showdowns against the fellow martial artist Michael Wood. Watch "In the Line of Duty 4", - Donnie's best work and one of the very best martial arts movies ever made. There is nothing like that today. P.S. Same re Fan Siu Wong. Watch "Death Games" (1997).
@tony_freshed9 күн бұрын
I agree to some extent. However, Ip Man showed that Donnie Yen can act, which was something people didn't associate him with back in the day. The closest would be Once Upon A Time In China 2, Iron Monkey, and his TV ventures for TVB and ATV. Donnie Yen is at his best in contemporary action movies. In The Line Of Duty 4 and Tiger Cage 2 are classics but he has already surpassed them with SPL, Flash Point, Special ID, Kung Fu Jungle, Big Brother and Raging Fire
@HexenStar8 күн бұрын
He did not surpass them (and never will). Not even remotely. It's like saying that Messi at 65 will surpass Messi at his prime. To anyone dealing directly with human movement, athleticism (and martial arts) - this is beyond obvious. And probably no one will surpass (even with a genius Frenchman or two in the mix), cause everyone who could, - is already long over the hill, or in the next world, one way or another.

@@HexenStar Donnie is always striving for improving and evolving his craft and doesn't want to do the same things over and over. And watching his progression as both action performer and action director from the start to now is significantly obvious. Whether things he has done is good or bad is up to each one as you can't please everyone. I say that Donnie has outdone himself several times since his start. Physically and creatively
@tony_freshed8 күн бұрын
@@HexenStar Just because you're older doesn't mean you can't achieve breakthroughs compared to when you were younger. There are exceptions. We're talking acting/action performing here, not physical sports so your analogy is a bad example lol. Donnie may be 61 years of age and isn't able to do some techniques the way he used to years ago but he can still perform with the same speed and without losing a beat. He works out and takes care of his health which is why he's still able to perform to this day unlike his peers who are now either slow or have retired.
