Till this day this is still one of the best segments in martial art movies. Fight after fight, each one is super well designed and choreographed, showcased a variety of styles, and told stories and intentions behind each move. The fact that they did all this WITHOUT involving the main character is even more impressive.

It also shows how learning martial arts in a vacuum is detrimental as a whole. It relies on knowing the kinds of moves that your opponent is willing to use to counter them instead of figuring out the optimal way of restraining your opponent. Most martial arts are not able to be used to restrain a fully uncooperative individual. That is why these masters lost. Not because they weren't trained well, but because they haven't been able to effectively test their techniques in real world simulations against an opponent who is willing to break honour and tradition to win a fight by any means.

I really love how this scene shows variety of martial arts, including the ones that teaches how to use weapons. This is in fact quite realistic description of Chinese martial arts sicne many of them were designed to train both unarmed moves and armed moves at the same time. Which is also quite a shame that we don't really get to see many of those skills properly passed down until today. We do not really need to use weapons of that time nowadays tho, the beauty and variety of martial arts must continue to be passed down and be respected.

Most of Chinese martial arts are secrets limited to certain families or schools. So, unless you're a member of those families or a student of those schools, you are not allowed to learn them at all. It's because Chinese have a very strict code of not sharing or teaching their cultures to outsiders especially martial arts that are meant to be a family secret or school's secrets. Of course, there was Bruce Lee, one of the Chinese who openly introduced Kung Fu to the world and he even opened Wing Chun Schools that accepts Westerners as students which is why he had so many troubles with Chinese community in the States, the community that generally dabbles in martial arts.

@@Petey0707 Well, i don't know about other countries but there are supposedly over 400 styles of kung fu and most of them are still not known worldwide or even taught to outsiders. This came from the fact that most Chinese in the past and maybe even now are close minded in sharing the knowledge of Kung Fu to non-Chinese which was their country's cultural treasure. Also, in the time of war, keeping them a secret can let them survive for a long time in a real battle since the opponents would be overwhelmed fighting against an opponent with an unknown fighting style.

It is one of the most complete and effective styles of Kung Fu, and also quite old, Chuck Norris actually approved it.

Different styles of martial arts contain different varieties of what you allow yourself to do. Some make you use your lower body more than your upper or it could be the opposite. Maybe your style is more defensive or offensive. One could make you quick with punches making it more of a quantitive punch rather than quality of the punch. Think of it as your personality. Everyone is unique and so does a style of martial arts. Some people even mix two or more martial arts together and combine them to make a quite unique style depending on how much is affected (it could be 30% wing chun and 70% Muay Thai)

The northerner's fighting style is non other than the mighty Pak Hok Pai system (Tibetan white crane). This is one the most destructive, powerful and most complete martial art ever. It not only will allow you to defeat three masters without sweating a single drop, but also will keep your body and health both internal and external insanely well. This system is so unnoticed that you can say is almost a keept secret. Of course this is a "Ip Man" movie, therefore it portrays wing chun as the defitine fighting system...so in the end master Ip manage to defeat the northerner. In the real world of course, this would definitely not take place.

I respect your opinion but you are wrong in every way. Firstly, the Northern style is not Pak Hok Pai but Shao Bei. And the Tibetan White Crane style is a good style but not a superior style. There is no style superior to another, but more prepared and more talented fighters.

From this video, I can surmise that a Kung fu master should have the following skills 1. Weapon training 2. Fist fight 3. Kicking and jumping Ip man has full mastery over all three categories. This was why in the boxer match against Twister, he was able to overwhelm Twister without having to use legs, because his fist training was already that good.

@IronChariot601 exactly, Ip Man took Wing Chun and took out stuff that wasn't necessary or was less practical. One thing he doesn't go for the eye gouge until he fights Cheung Tin Chi, which also shows that he views it as a dirty move and would rather fight fair. This also shows that Ip would rather switch the moves around instead of repeating a pattern too much, the only reason Cheung Tin Chi's eye gouge worked is because he kept spamming it in his patterns.

This is exactly that!!, the first Kung Fu master was super uncomfortable and acted cocky to "impress", his students, things got worse for the rest since they saw this guy was no joke. The only one able to defeat him was Master Ip. Why?, obviously he was way better but also, he had a more calm approach, a completely free mind. Amazing detail!!
