I know for a fact you can run a server for current versions of minecraft on a g5 Xserve (albeit runing debian for newer java support) with... "kind of" playable performance for about 4 players. Definitely helps to generate the world in advance on a more powerful machine and then copy the files over though - otherwise it takes an eternity. Will be interesting to see how an older version goes on the Mini!

So there was no possibility of installing a Radeon X600 XT in there? Like the one that comes stock with the Powermac G5 Geforce 6200 is really slow, once u open anything that is 3d it is going to run at 100% While the cpu (btw tested with Pentium III 1.2ghz under windows xp) would be sitting at about 60-70%

I'd definitely love to see a video on setting up the Mac mini as a Minecraft server! As for the rest of the video, I'm glad to see you've got a better cooling solution. I always thought that weedy fan was a bit weak for all the raw power of your upgraded processor. And the bracket looks pretty good, although I could tell it was going to push the card out of the slot with the second hex screwlock. Probably the most flush option would be to countersink the spot on the cut-out and use a countersink head screw. My only remaining concern is the heatsink on the graphics card doesn't have any direct cooling, and I can't really tell if there would be any airflow over it from the fan, so it's probably not great for extended gaming sessions. Anyway, can't wait to see where this goes next!

PowerPC Minecraft Server? Heck yea!
@WillThat4 жыл бұрын
Since the CD drive isn't in the cube acting as a shroud for the heat sink, I'm thinking not all the airflow is effectively cooling it.

I might have a tip on popping up the handle more easily. When I open my mine, I do the same, lay it upside down but before pushing down the handle I push the actual computer segment down (around the edges). Once I do that it doesn’t get stuck. It also sometimes gets stuck on the airport antennas. Just a heads up.

Hoping the minecraft server goes well for you, I know older minecraft is much easier to host but you might run into ram limitations! if possible do upgrade the ram in that mac mini for the server, and set the launch arguments to use the max amount you can allocate for java, it will do WONDERS for server hosting when stress testing with a lot of people!

I’d definitely try to play Minecraft with you on my MDD but I don’t think 1.25 GHz is fast enough. If you need to browse the web for your challenge, and you’re using Leopard, then use leopard-webkit instead of Ten4Fox. It’s basically, Safari 11 for Leopard. It doesn’t work with everything but it works. I’ve found during a long session, Ten4Fox has to be restarted as it slows down to the point of being unusable. Leopard-webkit also installs a version of Mail that works with modern security standards. Hope it helps. sourceforge.net/p/leopard-webkit/wiki/Home/
@ActionRetro4 жыл бұрын
Awesome! 1.25 should be plenty fast enough for a playable framerate, especially playing on a server. I'd think you'll get 20-30fps. Good suggestion about leopard-webkit - I'll definitely add that in!

I've seen a few people like that and … I just am not interested in their content. Man, these machines are ancient now, even my dual G5 cheesegrater. The usually don't work anymore, and when they do they're amazingly cool pieces of the past … but they've been left behind and most of us understand that and don't care. We're screwing around with these old machines because they're fun. That's just it, really. They're fun. If it becomes something not fun, what's the point? Better to see what these old machines can do and use them for the best purpose that they can serve today: Entertainment. If someone's a purist? *shrug* You do you. That makes the hobby infinitely more complex and more expensive, but if that's what you want, go for it. Not interested in a fight about it either way. Nor the old holy wars (except in a little fun), and I really don't care if people want to emulate or run different software than I would. (I've personally thought a couple machines on this channel that have gotten Leopard or Snow Leopard should've stayed Tiger machines so they could run OS 9 apps. But if I had those machines, that's what I'd run on them. Y'all can run the same or different, as you will.)

Hi, nice video, thank you for sharing. I also own a mac cube, but during the last teardown I got confused. I have a problem with the screws that secure the handle that allows you to pull the mac out of the case. There are 4 screws, 2 on each side of the handle, the 2 screws on left side are under the hard disk and airport cable, the 2 screws on right side are easily accessible. My questions: are the 2 screws on the right side different from 2 on the left side, or are the 2 screws on each side different? 4 identical screw or, two pairs of screws? thank you very much. Sorry for my English.

What a good idea for the MC server!! I told this guy a couple days ago on r/vintageapple to try that because his eMac was running incredibly slow. See, this is one of the reasons why keeping some of these older computers alive is important. You don't need 420-core 64-bit OVER 9000!!!! CPU with a 1 billion TB of RAM and a Graphics-Force PIMP x69000 video card to type a document. Or even most other basic tasks like sending an email (using an email client anyways) or listening to your "legally" ripped MP3 music collection. Hell, even using it to access many retro computing websites is still possible since most of those are purposely designed to work with older machines and browsers. And you need to access a FTP site to download Windows 3.x drivers for your Sound Blaster 16 or disk 2 of Mac OS 7.5.3 because yours is corrupt? Most FTP clients from that era should still work.
