I have just tried Fienix on my Mac G5, and I cannot get it to install. I made a bug report in the support section of the website. Basically it boots from the DVD, installer runs apparently normally but stops because it can't detect the disk drive attached to the machine. It's a 120GB SATA SSD which previously worked in this machine.

​​@@stamasd8500For small distros you should probably give them a few days to reply to your report before calling out a problem like this. Its a spare time project for most of them. Building a distro is a love project not a financial improvement project. The first thing you should do though is simplify the Mac. Get it down to just RAM and a hard drive and check and see if it installs before adding any type of peripherals.

The iSight version was very different than the first rev iMac G5s. The first iMac G5s were very easy to open, upgrade, and work on - the back just opened and lifted off giving access to everything . The iSight version was pretty different and not as friendly to open up. I worked Apple retail during this time and opened and set up a ton of the first rev iMac G5s. I always thought the iSight version was a downgrade, however I remember I was really impressed at the performance when I first got to side by side compare the iSight G5 to the first iSight Intel.

I own the Intel version, and Mother of God is that thing hell to work on. I got it free with a dead HDD, and I decided to slap an old crappy 60gb Kingston ssd out of a Wyse thin client from a McDonald's. Held in with duct tape, of course. I regret ever taking it apart, and I definitely threw a few unnecessary screws in the trash along the way. But now it's running as fast as its poor little heart can go 😂 It's now my anime/iPod transfer box.

Same here. Worked as as service technician during that time aswell. It was a premonition of what were ahead ^^ Annoying AF to work on. And @actionretro, the flux on the power connector is probably from factory. Had multiple with the same "issue" on my bench during those years.

I purchased the very first Intel iMac (32 bit Core Duo, early 2006) back when they were a dime a dozen. I don't really like it. Beautiful design, sure, but the 32 bit CPU was a straight up scam, they were already obsolete by about 2010 or so and nothing runs well on them. Snow Leopard is the last version that runs on it, and I really mean that. There is an OS X 10.7 hack that it can run, but nothing really works because they moved nearly everything to 64 bit. The latest Windows can still run, but any Windows version newer than 8.1 is truly rubbish on old PCs. For comparison my 2008 iMac is happily running the latest macOS with full functionality. And yes, I don't want to touch the internals. The 2008 got an SSD upgrade and a bunch of RAM, but no way am I touching the plastic behemoth.

​@@masterkamen371I think like the mini you could swap the cpu out with a core 2 duo model and magically have 64 bit support but even then lion crawls on such a machine without doing an SSD upgrade. Making the cpu upgrade honestly pointless unless *wink* oh and your limited on ram still even then but at least in windows you could see all of it with a 64 bit cpu. But I agree it was kind of a scam in that even the G5 was 64-bit but most software at the time was 32-bit and didn't take advantage of the hardware.

Yeah, the original imac G5 was so much easier to fix. And thats good because god, those things failed so often due to the caps, either on the board or the power supply.

So my mother in law, bless her heart, ran out and bought one of those at the Apple store. I was taking some college courses at the time and able to get a discount so I went with her. The whole time there and the whole time back to her house she went _on and on_ about how _lucky_ she was to get that damn G5 i-Sight "Because after this the Apple is just becoming another PC" (she is not tech savvy and I could spend days talking about it).

I bought an ugly pre-eyesight G5 in November 2004. Almost immediately the computer suffered from the capacitor plague and under warranty my motherboard was replaced. Still have it.

The iSight iMac G5s were sold for three months or so, not two. Oct 12 2005 - Jan 10 2006. Still a short lifespan, but they're not excruciatingly rare. These were largely post-capacitor plague. The first gen iMac G5s got clobbered with them. I worked as an Apple tech at the time and replaced so many boards and PSUs (I still have one of the little allen screwdrivers they put in every PSU replacement box). However, the second gen ALS models had far fewer problems. You'll still occasionally find bulging/leaking caps in these, but not at early G5 capacitor plague levels. Also, I'm the guy that got the 4GB stick working and sent that info to Everymac. From what I can tell, your 4GB sticks are all too high density. It's like putting a 512MB stick of PC133 into a beige G3. I don't think it's the brand necessarily, but more that you need16 chips per side, though there could be other factors. And the RAM you showed on eBay is registered ECC, which is not likely to work. Unregistered ECC has a much better chance if you can't find standard desktop RAM at that capacity.

I love these macs. This was my first "Modern Desktop", I grew up with Win95 machines on dial up in the early 2000s, we ended up getting an iBook G3, but we still had dial up so it wasn't very useful. I remember when my rural childhood neighborhood got rid of dial up and converted to broadband internet around 2006, and my dad decided to come home with one of these so my sister and I could share it and stay off his laptop. My 65yr old neighbor was an architect and a diehard Macintosh fanboy. He knew I loved PC games, and taught me about Boot Camp and Linux so I could play windows games, and I was always surprised at how well these macs could handle Windows games like CS Source, CoD4, and STALKER under Wine or on a WinXP dual boot.

I still use one of these for music. Old pro logic and garage band have some very cool synth pads that never made into later versions of the software. Plus it’s cool to dust off Doom 3 or Quake 4 for a retro gaming experience. :)

I got one of the early ones (my very first Mac) in 2005. After several repairs because of the power supply issue, Apple just gave me a new 2008 iMac to make me stop coming in every 6 months. It was nice when Apple still took care of their customers. I still have that 2008 iMac

This is my holy grail of unfound PPC goodness - I've come close, I've ended up with Intel Ones, or finding lesser models... But this one, this PARTICULAR one, has been my holy grail. Even my wife knows what this is, and why I want it... I think I've mentioned before (not that I expect anyone to remember) that one of my passions with PPC gaming is roleplaying stuff - both tabletop and cRPG oriented. This is the pinnacle, other than a temperamental G5 tower, for running old school Baldur's Gate, modded. I believe my dual 1.33 MDD died because of that game, simply couldn't push those pixels (yeah, I made it run 1600p with a flashed FireGLx3 - sheer, unadulterated, and completely stupid power) - I haven't fully diagnosed that mid-game death, but... The 2gb mod for night-time graphics... Yeah... Um... This can also fare better than any other g4 in a little bit of software called Dundjinni - the earliest ttRPG battlemap making software. It was very ambitious for a Java program, and the author passed away in 2008, well into the Intel era - but, I suspect, that the Java versions in PPC gave it a fighting chance. And since I like to do my D&D prep on vintage machines. Nonetheless, I am very jealous, Sean, and if you want to sell this away at some point, I'm awaiting that message ;)

I have the non-Isight version. Taking apart way easy, the back just pops off. However I am limited to 2GB ram. My SSD is equipped with Sorbet and Debian. Past couple years I notice software has outgrown it and getting sluggish.

The 20" G5 iMac was my first Mac after being years of windows and PC's (the iPod almost swayed me but I went Zune....so bad so very very bad) until succumbing to the capacitor plague. This computer proved to me that things did just work and hourly restarts were not normal.

I used to do Apple Authorized Repair work on these iMac G5s. The power supplies and logic boards were a common failure on them. Originally, Apple just swapped out the power supplies when they failed. Same with the logic boards, but for those you would hang on to the drives, PSU and the rest while swapping out the logic board and its mounting frame. The frame also included the speaker assemblies, too. But later on, Apple decided to just send us the logic board replacements instead. They figured it saved cost on shipping. When that change took place, the bench techs had to spend more time tearing apart smaller assemblies to move them out of the way for doing a simple logic board swap. Tedious work indeed.

I had one of the early gen iMac G5's back in the day, it popped right open from the back and was pretty easy to work on. Ended up having to replace all of the leaky boi capacitors and it ran like a champ for years. Wonder if it still lives on today, I always thought this was a really clean design that still looks fairly modern!

My primary school in Sydney had a whole fleet of these machines in our computer labs. I can recall them being almost constantly broken, with the few eMacs and iMac G3s working flawlessly. In 2008, they were replaced by Lenovo PCs.

i got one around 3 years ago in its original packing with everything included, even the (still unused) remote control. it runs with the 4 gb stick and an owc ssd upgrade kit. tiger is still great for retro gaming, the original starcraft runs really smooth. i went for a dual boot with the 64 bit version of adelie linux and even got the reverse engineered version of diablo compiled on it. a great machine even today if your into retro gaming, and yes, back then mac os games actually existed and most of them are abandonware, so easy to get, in case you dont have the original games from back then.

I loved my first-gen iMac G5 right up until the capacitors started blowing up. Which was… not very long, sadly. I’d have loved to have this version with the camera. I was always jealous of my friends with their iSight cameras, and only a little jealous of how cool their CPUs were. I’ve never had a computer overheat more often than that thing did! It sure was snappy, though, especially on Linux. And it only took me like 100 hours to get the GNU version of flash player working on PowerPC.

Part of the reason these are so rare is that they have an internal kill switch that has typically been pulled remotely by now, especially if you've tried to keep it current with a Linux distro. I know this because I had one, and gave it to my mother as an home computer when I went off to college. Not just the iSight version, but the version immediately preceding it also (a variant which I owned much later in my life, in Canada.)

My very first Mac :') Got the 17" version second hand back in 2009. I used it as my primary machine until late 2012 and even after that as a DVD player (RIP Front Row). NGL, I regret selling it a little bit, great machine.

Looks like your logic board uses Rubycon caps and they're pretty good (of course cold solder joints are still a problem). It's usually the Nichicon caps and the off-brand caps that have issues. I have one of these iSight G5s too and it's dead due to the power supply caps. It didn't power up before or after I recapped it, so I shelved it until I get a replacement PSU ordered. I also have an ALS iMac G5 and it's dead due to a MLB cap that's exploded. It's an odd value (1500uf at 6.3v or something) in a tight spot so I didn't have a suitable one on hand.

I had this model! I was so nervous that Intel Macs were coming and might have teething issues, that I got in quick and bagged the iMac G5 as soon as they added the iSight. It was a great machine, though I think mine developed issues with the DVD drive and may have died of hard disk failure. Of course the transition to intel actually went smoothly!

I have iSight G5 17" iMac. You can run modern MorphOS on it. Only thing with MorphOS is that you have to manually control fan speed.

Certain macs of that era have a thermal sensor built into the HDD. if you change to SSD there is a dongle that can go inline with the SSD to fix that issue. Otherwise the fans default to full blast.

I had this same model for a bit, it was great. Also, it was on the market for about 5 months, not 2 months. Apple released the intel iMacs about 2 months after this, but it was still sold for a few more month, in case you specifically needed a PPC computer.

I am intrigued by the circle Apple cut in the motherboard for one of the fans to go through. Why did they do that? Do other computers, like from Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc., ever have a circle cut in the motherboard like that? Also, I don't think ejecting the CD is supposed to shoot the CD across the room like that. I think it is supposed to stay half in the drive and just stick out.

Lenovo does that as well as half-circles and three-quarter circles in their laptops. The reason Apple did it probably is linked to the blower fan and where the air is being pulled from and where they want it to go to. Years ago, Mike Chen from Silent PC Review had a series on how guiding airflow could make a PC quieter while also improve performance. I think LTT, Jays2cents and Gamers Nexus have done similar experimentation and got similar results.

the iSight models did not suffer from the capacitor plague, only the earlier models did. EDIT: i forgot to mention, when running a linux distro you might come across graphical glitches due to a bug in mesa with the gpu it has, so watch out for that.

Played around a little bit with similar G5 imac. Fienix worked fine, but had issue with blue tint on youtube that I just couldn't solve :( . Otherwise Fienix worked relatively smooth. Now I went back to Tiger and second partition is Sorbet 10.5.9. For daily use Sorbet is fantastic. Looking forward for videos of you testing this machine with some linux distros.

It looks barely used... therefore no wonder the capacitors are 100% fine. They used to fail after few years of use. Also the iSight model had least of the cap issued compared to earlier G5 iMacs. That flux residue around the connector looks factory. These boards were really thick and sometimes the large connectors didn't get properly soldered - which is why they redid them by hand. This reminds me of my reccaping job on my G5 iMac that I did in 2009 or 2010. I destroyed 3 or 4 soldering iron tips and had to use hairdryer to heat up the board as it was just too much for my 60W soldering iron. If I were to recap one thesedays, I would go and get a heated pad

I had the 1.9GHz iMac G5 iSight and it was great. Unfortunately it succumbed to vertical lines on the LCD display just outside the warranty period and was not economical to have Apple fix it. I had ended up junking it but did keep the little iSight module board for some reason. When Covid hit and everyone was working from home and doing Zoom/Teams catchups, I never had a laptop/PC with a camera. What I managed to do was resurrect the iSight PCB module by attaching a USB plug (the cable from the iSight even has USB colouring) and installed some old Windows Bootcamp drivers for it. I was quite surprised to see it work once again--Windows detected it and showed it as "Apple Built-in iSight". ps I liked the cut at 3:57 with the back cover--those two clips/latches are a real bugger! Should've checked the comments in the ifixit guide as I swear magnets are the key ;) Thanks for the nostalgia trip

Yeah, the 17" iMac G5 I had didn't have the bezel camera. I didn't even see that until I got an Intel iMac. I was extremely dissappointed with what a mess the Intel iMac was to upgrade. The G5 I had, was a work of art. Not to mention, even though the G5 ran hot, the acrylic was more resistant to that heat, because the Intel iMac I had, the acrylic warped in such a way, that optical discs started to get scraped when inserted/ejected. That machine was RMA repaired three times because of optical drive issues, the last one, Apple decided to swap it with a new aluminum model.

The earlier G5 iMac (without iSight camera) were thicker along edges, chunky-looking, less sleek. I like THIS look, and Apple carried same (or very similar) external appearance over to the first Intel iMacs. I still have a white 17-inch Core2Duo iMac. It doesn’t start up, I think because its PRAM battery died. I should open it up and replace PRAM battery, see if it still works. It can be MY Linux Mac 😉

I would love to see someone creating a newer POWER CPU in such a G5 device... something like POWER8. How cool would that be? It would be really easy to use current Linux distributions
