Dust covers don't open and close during shots. Pulling back on the charging handel will open it or you can reclose it and your first shot will open it. But nice tutorial I recently had to do this and I did it the same way and even used your 9mm casing video.

In the opening moments of the tutorial, we explain that normally the dust cover would stay open for this rifle, but we wanted to show the viewers the process of it opening and closing since that is harder to fix in post. We are showing how you would replicate the chamber when firing a semi-automatic weapon even though this is a dust cover on an automatic rifle. We're super glad our 9mm shells came in handy! 😀

@@ActionVFXofficial I think what Nick means is that the dust cover NEVER closes after the first shot. It pops open and STAYS open. It's only closed by the shooter using his hand to close it after he's done firing. That's true whether semi-auto, full-auto, burst, etc. It's a trivial point, but otherwise an excellent tutorial and a surprisingly realistic effect of shell ejection! Nice work and thank you!

If you want to make it look more like it’s coming towards the camera (or going further away), just make it a 3D layer and animate the position Btw when I use my toy m1911 pistol for my videos, I use your bullet shell stock footage because I can’t find any other 40 - 45 shells Thanks, ActionVFX

I'm confused about the duplicating..do you mean to duplicate every single shell, creating a hundred layers of the same shell?

Since there weren't many shells used in this shot, Clayton opted to use a single shell from our Free Shell Collection (linked in the description) and used different sections of the clip for variations. You can do the same thing with multiple shell videos to add even more variation. If you have a scene that requires a large number of shells, you could look into setting up an emitter to eject the shells!

Hey! Sorry about that. In order to curve motion paths, you first need to make at least 2 keyframes. One at the initial position and one at the end. There will be two adjustment points that can be moved around to adjust the curve.

The focus of this tutorial was to composite the bullet shell ejections into an existing shot, but I can see your point that recoil and facial reaction would be necessary for a completed shot. Thanks for the input, though!
