My head just exploded! After all of these years, Brian is finally letting me in on the secret sauce. Learning Dorian by starting on the second interval of the major scale, or mixolydian from the 5th interval, is like doing calculus while trying to jam. This greatly simplified how to move from major to mixolydian to dorian without thinking. The key.......without thinking. Great teaching method.

Just learn the Major Scale and from there the Key of Songs. Best to go up to Circle Of Fifths then you won't need You Tube. All the other stuff is just extra bits of interpreting the same thing. It's not secret or calculus etc. That's just You Tube fakery.

Excellent lesson! For me, I like the idea of needing to move up the fretboard to access the Mixolydian mode as it 'forces' me to get comfortable moving up and down on the neck. After all, I PAID for 6 strings and 144 (or 132) frets, so I want to be able to USE all of those frets at some point, right? 😁

I love the guitar. It’s like a giant puzzle that slowly becomes more clear over the years. This is a very good explanation of some of the pieces coming together. Major scale all over the neck is the gateway to the modes. Combined with caged major and minor chords. Good old pentatonic and you’re well on your way. And if you think you’ve learnt it all……you haven’t !! 😊 that’s what’s great about it.

Just jammed a bit with the slow major backing track - it's such a fun to slide on one string seamlessly between the two first modes, switching back and force between those. As a progressed beginner (with 2 years of pausing) this tutorial made me improvise for the first time in my life only after a few minutes of getting the shape into my fingers - awesome!

If I understand this correctly your playing A Dorian over the key of A. Then your playing D mixolydian over the key of A.?? Edit: No it's okay I realised A is the 5th note of D and therefore A mixolydian 🙂

Learning modes always scared me as there's too much thinking involved. This makes it a lot easier and starts clicking in. Could also look at this as major scale based around D pattern with A Dorian=G major scale, A myxolydian=D major scale. Like this approach Brian! Will jump on part 2 very soon! 🎸😎

Musically, by ear, I appreciate. In terms of theory, I don't understand one thing. May I ask? A-major scale consists of notes: A, B, C-sharp, D, E, F-sharp, G-sharp. So I thought the Dorian scale, respective to A-major scale, is the scale starting at the 2nd step of A-major AND consisting of the SAME notes. As such, this includes (starting from the 2nd step): B, C-sharp, D, E, F-sharp, G-sharp, A. Whereas your fret pattern consists of some different notes. It goes: F-sharp, G, A, B, C, D, E (then again F-sharp, G, A, B, C). These are the notes of the G-Major scale. By starting from F-sharp, they begin with the 7th step of G-Major so to me it's F Locrian (respective to G-Major = to the one from whose notes it does consist). In consequence, I don't understand why you call it Dorian (Dorian meaning one built upon the 2nd step of a base scale). To list them: the basic (1st) is Ionian, on the 2nd step it's Dorian, 3rd - Phrygian, 4th - Lydian, 5th - Mixolydian, 6th - Aeolic, 7th: Locrian. If anybody shows me where I'm wrong (because I assume the Author is right), I will delete that comment in order not to blur the picture. Thanks.

He is playing A major scale and the A Dorian mode (which is really the G major scale notes) and finally he says he is playing the mixolydian mode which are the notes from the D major scale. He should have said he is playing A mixolydian, which starts at the fifth note of the D major scale. So basically in the key of A major, you can play the A major and the G major and D major scales. That’s how I like to think of what is going on.
@tweedledee4922

I just watched this video and I think you are absolutely right. He's not playing an A major scale. He's playing a G Major scale in the Dorian mode. Which means it starts on the second note of the G Major scale which starts with the A and then follows the pattern of the G Major scale for 6 more notes to complete the A Dorian scale. I was confused because this pattern is not following in the A major scale ( these are not the notes of the A major scale) but it follows a G Major scale notes with F-sharp being the 7th note.

I've seen a number of great lessons this week that take this simple approach, where you're not having to thing about the everything, but minimal patterns... Or, just a part of what we would traditionally see as a whole pattern (from low E to the high E string). It takes real self control to not get totally sucked into learning the whole fret board without taking a break with the smaller, manageable things in life to just enjoy music. You've inspired me to look at the use of the arpeggio triads patterns on strings 2 to 4, along with the your scale pattern : )

How Can We Hear The Full Example If You Speak Over It Or Stop Playing To Make A Point. Newbies Will Never Learn, I Find It A Bit Annoying. Finish The Full Example w / Backing Track And Then Explain. Your On To Something Here, The Will Want To Learn It. P.S. Not A Hater. Thanks.

Take the 5 CAGED positions but for the key of E so EDCAG at frets 0-2-5-7-9. Within each of those 5 positions, start with Minor Pentatonic and keep adding more notes until you get essentially Mixolydian and the Blues scale combined for this:1-2-b3/3-4-b5-5-6-b7. That’s 9 notes which only leaves these three: b2-b6-7. They can be used as chromatic passing tones. - It’s all chromatic!

So Brian, it's frustrating for me after watching this video in particular. Reason: while I've been playing now for a few years, and know my pentatonic major/minor scales, triads, and learned the modes (sort of), and think I should be at least an intermediate player, watching this "Easiest scale pattern" teaching makes me realize I don't know guitar as well as I think I do, or should at this point in my playing time. Frustrating. BUT I have decided to join back with you as soon as I get back home from a job assignment that allows no time to practice (and will be retiring soon) and start at the basic's again to see what I'm missing in my tool box of knowledge and go from there.

Hi. I have a 'problem'. Because I like (and often, er, love) all those - often 'dissonant' - chords, the flat this, sharp that, augmented t'other mish-mashed together (and sadly I also like 'atonal' music), when you started finding the key (and ended up on A major), ALL the notes you played going up from fret to fret on the top E string - F, F#, G, G# before you get to the A - sounded 'right'. Now the fact that I'm aware of this means it's not really a 'problem'. But . . . (NB I don't really like the word 'dissonant'. OK, technically it might be the correct word, but to my tastes it is anything but 'dissonant'. Unusual, yes, but not 'dissonant' as the word might be understood. On the other hand, thanks for this and all your other videos.

The wording was super confusing at first. We're in A Major now we're playing the Dorian mode... I would expect you to be playing B Dorian without even thinking about it. I was super confused of what you were doing until I realized you were playing A Dorian. You didn't mention which Dorian scale you were playing and changed keys all together without mentioning it. Same for mixo... You're like now we're playing the mixolydian scale and you repeat it again that were in the key of A... Which would be D mixo. So by not mentioning which Dorian scale and which mixolydian scale it was quite confusing at first.

You are not yet ready to accept this level of instruction. That's OK. Master the major scale, the major pentatonic scale and the minor pentatonic scale before trying to learn more. By 'master', I mean know how to play from root-to root-to root, starting on any fret on any string. Know how these scales are built instead of just learning the shapes. Then you'll be ready to understand lessons like this. I agree that most scale videos are confusing, but if you know the basics as I described than you can discern which videos will work with the way your brain works and which will not. For example, I improvise by seeing triads all over the fretboard, but the GAGED System makes little sense to me. I kinda get it, but it is so cumbersome that it doesn't seem worthwhile. It does unlock many doors for many people, so it must be good, right? Maybe I'm just not ready for it.
