Who takes a GUITAR LESSON and turns it into one of the coolest pieces of music I've heard in ages? This guy! Wow, nicely done, man!
@DeaconBlues205 Жыл бұрын
Brian, I wanted to take a minute to express my appreciation to you for helping to ignite my passion for guitar/music again. I will turn 69 years old on the 28th of this month. For D-E-C-A-D-E-S I played first position cowboy chords, never bothering to learn how to play lead solos. Earlier this year, I met a guy (older than myself) at church. Eventually, he invited me over to his home this past February, and he showed me the A Minor Pentatonic scale. The fire was lit! Since that initial lesson in February, I have learned so much. Not to mention that I have purchased 13 guitars this year! They range from a Duesenberg Starplayer to a PRS to a Gretsch to a D'Angelico to a G&L to a lowly (but serviceable) Grote. I found Active Melody a couple of months later, was immediately hooked, and purchased an annual Premium Membership on the spot. Your teaching style meshes with me perfectly. This particular lesson, however, has pushed me up to the next level. I've worked on this piece for a few weeks now, and I am so proud that I can play this all the way through without (too much) hesitation. It will be the perfect piece when I, one day soon, will walk into my men's Bible Study group, attempt to impress them with my musical prowess. But seriously, thank you! This is fantastic! It hearkens back to the old westerns of my youth, especially the Clint Eastwood classics. It sounds like old horses smell ... manly, dusky. Now, thanks to you (in part), my obession is full-blown, and I am now even dipping my toes into the colorful world of Jazz Guitar. Keep 'em coming, Brian! You are my favorite guitar teacher, and considering that I also watch Paul David and Blue Morris (among others), trust me .... that is the highest praise that I can pay you. Well, except for renewing my subscription.

You make a comment at 7:40 that triggered a thought. I would love a quick video from you on how/when to use your volume knob on a guitar. It may sound pretty basic, but I'm pretty much set at 11 all the time.

Great lesson, Brian! Not to make a lesson on it, but do you know how to play "Neon" by John Mayer?
@markvanhorne3276 Жыл бұрын
I notice that there is very little attack on the guitar picking. I put an enveloper effect on my guitar with the threshold set to zero, the attack time at 200ms, and the release time at 2 ms to get that sound. It works well with the vibe of the song. I also made my own backing track so I could put an ending on the song. The way it's written the E7 in measure 24 keeps leading back to the Am. So I wrote an ending where the I have a B7 and an E7 in the second to last measure, and an Am in the final measure. The B7 is a 5 of 5 secondary dominant, and the E7 is a 5 of 6.

Great lesson Brian. This tune has a very Latin vibe both in terms of the rhythm and the sound. It reminds me a bit of the Cuban guitarist Manuel Galbán (listen to his album "Mambo Sinuendo" which he recorded with Ry Cooder). I love the way you break this down and make it so much easier to understand. I already have a Boss TR-2 but am off to my local guitar shop to buy a delay pedal. Any recommendations?

I must be too tired this week - having trouble with this one - so I slapped the chords into JJazzLab, set a slow blues@60bpm... and just jammed away in this week's 'vernacular'. I'm discovering that, at my level, the solos very much depend on what the drummer and the rhythm guitarist are playing - or in this case - what JJazzLab is playing! Who cares - I'm having fun!

In a I-IV-V tune of Am-D-E like this one, the F# chord would be the VI (I believe) - but you use the F chord - and it seems to fit ok, but what is it? I feel like I should know this ;-)
@gretchenousterhout6726 Жыл бұрын
it has something to do with F# as the relative minor triad of A? Not sure how that works with Am? and really I-IV-V would be A-D-E not Am sooo...
