I haven’t seen Prison Break, but it’s now on my list. Fitchener has been one of those “anonymous heavies” in movies for years. Those actors are noticed by fans who want to know who played that ultra-authentic convict who really scared them, like Danny Trejo or - in their day - Lee Van Cleef, Jack Elam, Strother Martin or modern “mad-men and psychos” like Michael Shannon. Van Cleefs association with Clint Eastwood raised his visibility to remind those who remembered an anonymous cohort of Lee Marvin’s iconic “Liberty Valance”, whereas Jack Elam stirred up second chance at a career of playing parodies of his earlier personae. It’s interesting that you were wishing he’d say Prison Break. We seem to have a more intimate bond with outlaws. Actors covet those roles. But the fact that the guy who no one else knows connects with so many people reminds us we see ourselves as that guy who doesn’t get credit, not glamorous credit: he yields the recognition, but he’s the one who gets the job done. William Fitchener? See Albino Alligator. It stars Matt Dillon but Fitchener makes it smoke. That one line: “What do I know, right? I’m a sociopath!”
