Actors: Before you Take that Selfie! (or how to avoid looking like a tourist)

Sigh... in today's world, it's so tough not to succumb to the urge to document our lives. But actors need to adopt a different way of existing if they want to be considered professionals on set.

I was on set for the Walking Dead a few years back and a girl literally pulled out her phone while we were filming a scene. 🙄It was a crowd scene and the director stopped cold and said “Okay …who had their phone out !!??” It took her a while to fess up ( after our peer pressure !) She finally confessed. Both her and her friend were escorted off set … and I never saw them again, lol. 🤦🏻‍♂️ I’ve been on set with Will Smith , Martin Lawrence , Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus etc. And I’ve never had the urge to ask anyone for a pic. Hell, I feel like I belong there as much as they do! 😂 I just enjoyed the work and their conversation , especially Will. Super nice guy ! I lived in the moment and just enjoyed it. 💯💯

Wow. Thanks for sharing. It’s so hard to police background, because oftentimes folks are just there “for fun” or to get a glimpse of a celebrity or to just be a part of the “magic” of Hollywood. Those “tourists” can quickly give the other background a bad reputation. And principal actors can also fall victim to treating set like a vacation.

Great video. I did a few scenes with a known actress & didn't ask for a photo as it felt unprofessional, but I'm totally someone who takes a trailer selfie & posts it after the project is released. The 'tourist' metaphore is a great one. 🎉

Guilty on one count on my first union job with an A-lister, but at least I worked with them directly and didn't ask for a pic until things wrapped for the day. I was a pro on set and knew I was there to do a job and that I belonged there, but taking the pic felt icky afterwards. Never did it again. Great video on an important topic. Thanks!

I had many a moment (around that same time I took those Change Up pics) where I wanted to ask for other pics. I almost accosted Will Ferrell (on Anchorman 2) while he was getting his makeup removed at the end of the day. Hot towel over his face. That would've been awkward. Thankfully I didn't follow through...

Matt - thanks for much for this! A great reminder that we are professionals and need to act (pun intended) accordingly. I plead guilty to have asked for and received selfies in the past on network shows and big budget movies. And I really love your idea of gauging and waiting from them to ask us and even then, your point about posting such photos is well taken. Regarding indie projects, yes a whole different matter but even then there are expectations that should be set and met. You're the best man. Please give Ms. Brooke a hug for me 🤗

I remember being core background on a now-cancelled-show-that-was-a-reboot-of-a-popular-show-ten-years-ago where I'd occasionally find some new background kid take tik-toks on set in costume. The talking to we'd get from production not too long afterwards were annoying and I mainly wish I'd seen said kid get fired on the spot.

i get it. Ive found its easier to get pics with the directors or producers, as far as pics with co-stars i just read the room and see how they are. Ive done it both ways, pics with co-stars and non on set. I say its alwsy better to air on the side of being cautious and dont take pics. But to each his own. Jusat try not to come off as a starstruck BG with a phone on set. A listers take pics on set, its no biggie, just wait until after the martini shot.

how do you feel about the photos from being on set, some with the other actor, some just of himself/herself in costume being posted in the photo section of his/her IMDB page after the project has aired?

You're (probably) not violating any NDA after the project has aired, though I know of one actor who posted a photo of them in their cast chair AFTER the project aired, and because Tyler Perry was in the background of the shot, the studio reached out immediately and told him to take it down. So you just need to be discerning about (a) what's in the photo, and (b) the reason why you're posting. But assuming you're not violating any NDA, it's purely a judgment call on your part.

@@atlantanonail7495 Sounds good. I have some OLD photos from set with celebrities, but in the last 10 years, I have only posted new headshots, promo photos, or stills from the project. But again, that's just me personally.

It's bad. Almost as bad as posting your "Star Meter" from IMDb. ( Worse actually, from a legal standpoint). Okay I know that was mean. But... I see this and nothing points to rookie quite as fast as that one.

I guess we can’t fault companies like Amazon (who owns IMDb) for trying to make stupid features like star meters, but you’re right that they’re useless.

Your call. If you’re giving away sensitive information definitely. If it’s out of wardrobe away from set (or the project has aired), you’re likely not violating an NDA. In that case it’s your judgment call.
