I love how much the word 'authenticity' comes up when the makers and actors talk about this, because it's absolutely what they should be striving for. Accuracy comes from real history, but Shogun is historical fiction telling a story analogous to real events. So to hear that adhering to the spirit of history, of the period and that culture is what was foremost in their minds is good to hear.

She’s not really Japanese... It’s funny to hear “our” culture, “our”…she’s actually a New Zealander and her parents are not even Japanese just Japanese descendants (meaning she’s not really brought up in a Japanese family setting). I mean we can tell right? No Japanese women here in Japan think our past actresses always played too strong or too reserved Japanese characters, we have great films played by actually really beautiful Japanese actresses. She’s not Japanese at all in this sense. Just because she’s a Japanese descendant she’s not Japanese. I don’t know her at all and she’s not famous in Japan.

"Shogun (1980)'' starring Toshiro Mifune was a good movie, but there were some scenes that felt strange to me as a Japanese. Since Mr. Sanada is one of the producers this time, I'm looking forward to "Shogun'' being more sophisticated in terms of historical research than the previous work. In other productions in which Mr. Sanada participated as an actor, he was responsible for conveying correct Japanese culture to the American art staff. Sanada is a modern-day Toshirou Mifune. Unfortunately, Mifune declined to appear in Star Wars as Obi-Wan Kenobi or Darth Vader, though. I'd like to see Sanada appear in the Star Wars series in place of Mifune someday.
