Yes! I'm Japanese. The original work is a creation borrowing the name of a historical figure, This movie attempts to accurately portray Japan. Even world-famous movies often portray Japan incorrectly. For example: Tom Cruise 『The Last Samurai』 There are no 「ninjas」 in that era anymore. Roland Emmerich『The Day After Tomorrow』 Scene of hail falling in Japan. That streetscape is China. Keanu Charles Reeves 『47RONIN』 The day the protagonist met the shogun. The colors of the costumes and buildings are Chinese. 『Wolverine SAMURAI』 bath time There's no woman who can wash his body.

Got so much right! One technical detail that’s been pointed out by others is the pistol scene where Blackthorne refuses to give them up and then his consort takes them for safekeeping. The problem is only that the pistols used are nearly 150 years in to the future. They were flintlock pistols, which didn’t exist in the 1600s. To be correct they should have been either wheel-lock pistols or match-lock pistols. It’s no biggie, but once you’ve seen it is hard to unsee. It would be like making a WW1 film with the officers carrying Glock 19 pistols if you know what I mean. Other than that small detail this is such a wonderful show!! Showing Hollywood and Ridley Scott how it’s done!! Thank you guys and gals for this!!

It's really good so far but I wish it was just the Japanese actors or that someone else played John blackthorn because the actor doesn't do a good job at his acting is so cringe to me. I think Tom hardy would have suited that role perfectly.

I read Shogun when it first came out in 1975. I am now 75, and I am thrilled to see this new production of one of the greatest novels ever written. In my opinion Hiroyuki Sanada is as brilliant as Toshiro Mifune as an actor. Everyone in this production is perfect. My only question is why film in Canada instead of Japan?

Apparently it was because of even more restrictive COVID Regulations during 2019 to 2021 in Japan. Both Uclulet on Vancouver Island and Port Moody benifited from that. Although how would Uclulet on the west side of the island, which is just a small tourist village cope with the influx of thousands of people! It's nice to get the business. Surely a lot of locals would get temporary jobs building sets and feeding them; but what about logings?!

Japan makes annual drama series of this same vibe/era (without the Hollywood type bells and whistles) called "Taiga" dramas. If you search online hard enough you can find some of them with English subtitles. Throw this into your search engine for an example, all the episodes are out there -> "sanada maru english subs" (Sanada was a famous samurai).

Im hoping they finish the book in one season then continue in a new fictional way that does not involve William Adams (not because I dont like him but because the book is HIS story and should not be elaborated on). Also if they continue in a new fictional way they should make it very clear that this is NOT the book anymore and its just historically inspired stories from the period.

Look at Al pacino or De Niro etc. The actress who plays Mariko is so captivating. She is the most memorable character I have seen for years. It doesnt help that most American entertainment is very poor these days though. Also her speech about coming from Samurai was anything but submissive but that was why it was so impactive. I am Japanese. Up until now, Japan has always been portrayed in foreign movies in a humorous way. In particular, the interior and scenery of the room that looks like it could only be Chinese, the artificially Asian-style production, and the disappointment that Japanese people would feel strange when they see it, but they are used to it and feel that it is something like this. I was also surprised that ``The Last Samurai'' was popular in America. Although it was an interesting work...I enjoyed it as a movie, even if it made me feel a little uncomfortable and I laughed a little. In such a situation, Hiroyuki Sanada of ``shogun'' had great enthusiasm for the production. It's amazing to be able to watch a Japanese period drama that doesn't feel out of place in America. I would also like to thank everyone who respected Japanese culture and worked with me. Thank you for creating such a wonderful work.

Hiroyuki-sama, I've watched your movies since I was a little boy. Loved all asian movies but mostly the Japanese ones. All your roles even those now decades old, were all amazing an accurate interpretations of a real Japanese and Samurai. You possess power of saying something without saying it. Such a rare skill. Both yourself as an actor but now also as a producer ? Watching you have such as a big presence in Shōgun as an adult and content creator myself..to later find out you was also the producer really mind-blew me. You, the cast and film crew deserve a few Oscars for this one. I've studied Japan my whole life. And history is one of my great passions. I'd sadly argue that the majority of film recreating history do often lack. Especially Hollywood I have not watched Hollywood in 10 years because most of it is pure nonsense. The amount of detail Shogun has everywhere is mind boggling, so much work and passion from so many people. Art is displayed in every scene. Every frame is a screenshot. So so much from their daily life, the work, the craftsmanship, their clothes, the clear class-difference, the rituals, the tea-pouring, the gardens and the Zen behind it.. For a history nerd like myself this was pure joy, not for the art itself only, but also for the accuracy in every single detail surrounding environment and characters. For Feudal Japan fans and bookworms please read Lian Hearn's Tales of the Otori. Some fantasy touches but the accuracy is like this reading Shōgun. Thank you PS why did you have to kill the gardener I'm a 40yo man crying..heartbroken

Toranaga's character is AMAZING completely blown me away of how much this guy's is super smart he twisting all the characters around him with his fingers and they even doesn't know it. He's everything that Edard Stark from game of thrones should be, but wasn't. He is so mysterious that you wanna dwell more and more into his fascinating character, like, how he knew Omi and ibishiga try to betray him yet every time they end up doing everything for his benefit. This guy is a genius.

"And then we again polish it." And this is why this show is so good. They polished it till there was nothing to add or cut and went then with it afterwards. Also huge respect for having no fear of changing some of the original names from the novel. It was about time someone accept that it was needed.

I saw the first mini-series as a child and read the novel as a teenager. James Clavell would have been proud. They really did the story justice. I hope FX pushes this series hard for the next Emmys.

can't do it, not enough material. It's only one book. The author, wrote several other historical fictions around this time period, Tai-Pan about the founding of Hong Kong, Gai-Jin set in Japan at the end of the Edo period, Noble House and Whirlwind about the major European Trading Houses and Hong Kong, then one more quasi-autobiography called King Rat about the author's time as a WW2 Japanese prisoner of war. All great books, but only Shogun has enough of the story elements to make for a movie/series. Book fiends like me have been calling for years for a studio make an updated version of Shogun, and we've finally got one. But don't expect more. Just enjoy it while it lasts.

please no, especially if there isnt enough material. Look at what Amazon did with lord of the rings.Especially with Disney+ being one of the streaming platforms, we don't need a woke terrible plot just to try to make money.

Never seen such a degree of artistry in the delivery of dialogues, gestures, images, etc.! Japanese culture is uniquely mysterious in so many ways. The actors are intelligent, cultivated, investigative, and very engaged in reproducing all details of Japanese culture of that time.

This series is epic television that will be considered and remembered for its greatnes for decades. I almost feel melanchoy that it is coming to an end. They will need to bring extra luggage to carry away all the Emmys, Golden Globes and SAG awards they will win.

I read the Novel years ago, and was a fan who watched the original great TV show in the 80s! Who also studies and loves Japanese/Samurai culture/history! You did an astonishing job with this Show guys! I loved it! Especially the acting of the two lead Japanese characters by Anna & Hiro! Outstanding! The ability to act with just the eyes or a very limited subtle expression to convey emotions was so beautiful and astonishing! It was this LESS is MORE acting that was such a fantastic part of the performances! EMMYS all round for every aspect of the show I expect! Set design, costume is beyond doubt! 🌟❤️👏👏👏

I'm Japanese, and this drama was a wonderful work from every perspective, from a Japanese historical perspective, culture, tradition, and the Japanese mindset. The feeling of "Seppuku'' may be difficult for non-Japanese people to understand, but it has been passed down to modern Japanese people as a "wanting to help others even at the cost of self-sacrifice.'' It is.
