FAFA is awesome but malayalam industry has been simply fabulous even since 90s. Directors such as Padmarajan, K G George, Sibi Malayil, Bharathan etc still influence the present filmmakers in malayalam. Also Mohanlal, Mammooty and Thilakan are literally world class actors - wonders to which sadly non malayali audience are not exposed to. And I repeat that's a shame for Indians. Also the industry has changed alot in the quality of films from 2011( from where the new Gen cinema began ) onwards and that's been simply amazing 👏. So as someone who watches films from every language I can say that Malayalam cinema is and has always been the best film industry in our country.

I used to go through all malayalam, tamil, telugu, kannada and hindi channels and I watch those movies without any subtitles (i don't remember all the names or how many I've watched). I could understand most of the words spoken without any other help.. And now I even watch English, French, thai, Korean, Japanese and Chinese movies too.. I'm sure there are many malayalees like me, and the commenter. That's what Tovino was talking about

One important point that I've observed through out the years being someone who has roots from the south but has lived his entire life in the north, moulded by their culture, there is some kind of language barrier or cultural barrier that the rest of India feels when it comes to trying out non hindi / non-Bollywood films. The sudden culture shock or be it the struggle to read subtitles is usually a major deal breaker, than all the important points like reach and exposure that Tovino has mentioned. People don't even know classics like Chup Chupke, Hera Pheri, Bhool Bhulaya, Drishyam etc and many more are originally malayalam films. This is something I've been observing with all my friends and acquaintances.
