It is because of the Hegemony of some of these producer who don't give space to good story writer....and also their love for Good Muslim and Bad Hindu storytelling and some stupid over the top drama....some brainless comedy.....that is why the coming decade will be dominated by south movies for pan India films because they have invested in real home grown stories and not copy of Korean or west movies that lack Indian culture and style...

Would love to see a discussion on the female actors who are getting first and second chances on streaming platforms. This is revolutionary for the industry. For example, Lara Dutta, Dia Mirza, Sushmita Sen, Karisma Kapoor, etc. who got leading roles in their own shows - this is unheard of! Some of the shows worked, some didn't but there will be more and it is refreshing to see them play full parts as opposed to just eye candy in movies about men.

Because of someone like Anupama, we are even talking about this. She wants to have that intellectual conversation about things beyond commerce, collaboration, profits, numbers. She keeps steering the discussion about art, content, quality, value. I’m so happy that she opened the round table with comparing Bollywood to the Malayalam & Tamil cinema. It was like showing mirror to these top people in showbiz. I think this mostly because the stakes are so high in Bollywood. People like Akshay who are on a binge of working on back to back projects at such a tight schedule that it almost impossible to reach a certain level of quality in the movie. People on the round table got to understand that they are investing in massive projects with huge stars at the expense of art. I see each one sitting there has capability of making an artistically beautiful movie that is commercially popular. We need to have more of such discussions.

This was a very insightful roundtable. Thank you FC. I wonder if it's the same in Hollywood, this sad and unfair norm of prioritising celebrity and star fees over that of film crew (and screenwriters). With Zoya Akhtar and Karan Johar mentioning it here, I'm getting the impression they don't have the power to change it. But I've always assumed that these things are usually within producer jurisdiction. In any case and I think if there are strong guilds for these various film crew departments they might be able to come up with a benchmark figure that producers and execs are not allowed to go lower on. That we are still debating whether or not film crew deserve to be handsomely remunerated and rewarded for all the blood and sweat they bring to a film is very problematic. Pay your film crew. Pay your writers too! Screenwriters have been treated really unfairly in this area too. So much to be said. Zoya makes such great points, so admirable. I agree with the point about Malayalam films and nuance. The Great Indian Kitchen was so good, such a beautiful surprise. It felt like I was unwrapping a very thoughtful and uncanny present.

The biggest problem is going to theatre and watch a movie is super expensive. Not just in terms of money it terms of time and effort. To watch a 2:30 hrs movie you drive 2 hours and in total it comes to 5-6 hours thing. Money wise 2 tickets cost at-least 800 to 1000, parking cost 100, petrol cost 300, popcorn cost you 600 and then watching a horrible film and come home makes you frustrated and make you never ever go for a movie. That’s why most of us don’t go to theatres any more unless we are 200% sure it’s a value for money.

People who are commenting about "Who pays 800-1000", try to see what kind of point he is trying to make. Different places in India have different price points but the places where we spend our hard earned money is perfectly summarised above. Apart from the pre and post requisites of watching a movie in theatre, we also pay for the OTT platforms which will host these movies in 1-2months. Now ask yourself if you really want to go to the theatre for every Friday released movie.

Let's put it in simple words: Most Hindi films are made to make money and not the perspective from celebrating cinema or presenting Art which doesn't work anymore. We need a "sensible and convincing story".
@jaschowdhari34632 жыл бұрын
Its applicable everywhere , as much as I agree with earning money coz come on ppl have bills to pay and run the home , but art is compromised . Then what about all Nolan's , Wachowski sisters and Denis Villenueve's films which are made on large budget scale and still appreciated by audience. A film like John Wick is almost made on 50 % low budget but still loved by people .Sairat , a film which is not even best work like Fandry , Pistulya directed by National award winning director Nagraj Manjule made 110 crore worldwide . Fun fact about Sairat is none of the actors selected for the film have acting background, still they acted so awesome as compared to soft actors and even Rinku Rajguru got a National award special mention . All the actors in the film are locals from Solapur district . A lot of regional films earn not on basis of star , but stories . Nagraj Manjule is a living legend and hit the bull's eye and is one of the succesful directors and producers in our industry after Anurag Kashyap . These guys know that good stories matter and they have given chances to so many raw talents of our country and their careers have been made and they all are stars now . And talking about sensible story , its happening since 2010s , when fresh talent started making mark and underrated gems became stars . Times are changing , plus dont rely on just one industry , there are lot of industries in our country which are making a mark .

Could it be that the elite capture of Hindi film cinema has literally eroded that grassroots authentic grasp it had on it's audience. I very recently got into South Indian films (and I don't know any south languages) but just the mere earthiness (for the lack of a better word) of the films put me through emotions I have never experienced with Indian films before. We can just start with actors and actresses.. Southern actors and actresses look REAL. Their bodies that look real, and I am not against the glamour of the mainstream but when you see an Alia or Jhanvi or Katrina or Anushka on screen, they look so pristine, so far far away from even the supporting cast and background artists surrounding them. Even though Alia did a good job in Gully Boy and Raazi, there is always an element of realness missing. You never lose sight that you're watching Alia Bhatt. I find that is not the case with south Actors. The capacity to just become the character is immaculate. Maybe because they are more grounded overall and maybe the south has not seen the same kind of elite capture.. I am not sure. I find that many times, many hindi actors have nothing intellectual to say about their roles, and that gives me even more of a sense of how they are really not rooted in the reality they are trying to sell us. I think what connected people really to Rajkumar ot Ayushmann is that they have some of that earthiness. But even that is not enough. The real leap is how does the Hindi cinema get over it's elite pandemic that is making people feel so alienated from the films and the stories. And realistically without using tropes of religion or nationalism, can hindi cinema actually pull an audience with real stories? That's the question to really ask.

Indian cinema is 💩💩💩
@insomniarulesmylife37932 жыл бұрын
This is partially true to an extent. Hindi cinema needs a re-imagination to be relevant to its audience in an increasingly globalised, competitive world. South understands that authenticity is their asset. People watch it because they know what to expect from it. The southern touch so to speak. Hindi has a built in default audience of 7-10 states which Hindi speakers inhabit. But these 7-10 states are diverse and have their own cultures and aspirations. Unless you represent that, you will lose out to more authentic content from other regions.

On the conversation around paying top actors xx amount because they will be able to recover xx amount post-release, I feel this argument stems from the fact that we market actors to audiences and the technical crew is the obvious scapegoat in this scenario. What I am trying to say is that we tell people, watch this movie because this STAR is in it. I guess it's time we start marketing the crew to the audiences -- who's the director? who's the producer? who's the writer? Position those faces as your heros, dont rely on actors for your star-branding. And we might see a positive shift in pay gaps to technical crew and subsequent quality of movies that we churn out.

I am not Bollywood film watcher. I see a few films which get a positive feedback like andhadhun, barelly ki barfi or stri. I much more watch Malayalam and tamil due to the quality of content. But in my heart, I want the Bollywood to comeback strongly creatively and financially. Because the way in which Bollywood has increased visibility and market for Indian films, no other industry has done that. Once the world sees Bollywood, then they are likely to watch Telugu, Tamil or Malayalam later. Reaction channels in youtube is s an eg for this. Second reason is the soft power which Bollywood brings for the nation is immense. 3 idiots / Dangal has projected such positive impact for India in southeast Asia. If Bollywood gives chance to newcomers in all the fields, ultimately good people will emerge. However this requires taking chance. At least for every five movies, if they try some outrageous idea for one; they might discover next Anurag Kashyap. It is also important to give people a break when they are young. Take an eg of Tamil industry ; directors like Atlee, Karthik subbaraj etc made films with superstars when they are so young. If they had given Manoj Bajpai a break 15 years earlier, he would have played roles which Rajkumar rao is now playing. This roundtable definitely missed Dinesh Vijan who bankrolled small picture hits

Indian don't realise how popular bollywood is outside of India. Its our true soft power, exporting our culture and language to other countries, A country like afghanistan learned Hindi by watching bollywood movies. Bollywood is also watched in middle east and african countries. Chinese president Xi after watching dangal, he said i would like to see more bollywood movies screened in China. In my opinion, Bollywood can be, What Hollywood is for America.. Bollywood can open other new markets for themselves and also for our regional movie industry. It will benefit everyone.. Nowadays bollywood lacks, A good movie script and also they are making mostly metro centric movies. They don't know how to make a good masala movie like south. Otherwise Bollywood is good it has given many iconic movies. The reason why it's popular outside of India.

Most of Aamir Khan's films have been great from 2000 to 2016 but none of them did record business in south. But Dabang 3 which was a disaster got great opening in karnataka thanks to Kichcha Sudeep. The Hindi producers themselves don't have the confidence to release their films in south india on a large scale. Bollywood is highly dependent on Maharashtra. I know Sooryavanshi was promoted on a marathi show. Similarly hindi films should be promoted in south india. Somebody has to take the risk and try to win over south indian audience. It's not about content only. It is also about promoting and getting the right number of theatres.
