the best thing about tilda swinton and suspiria was that nobody knew who the actor was. Even in the movie credits, the old man was played by "Lutz Ebersdorf". BUT NO ONE KNEW who he was. No one suspected Tilda because she was playing Madame Blanc, the main antagonist of the movie. It wasn't until Tilda hinted in an interview that she may or may not have been playing more than one role in the movie, aside from her obvious role of Madame Blanc, she also played one where she was a decrepit old woman and the other was the psychologist (old man).

Eddie redmayne makes such a pretty woman. Something about his facial structure is just inherently beautiful imo
@NorthernRealmJackal5 ай бұрын
Really? I thought he looked jarring and manly, which is exactly what makes the character work. I'd imagine that the pain/social stigma of being a woman who looks like a man, is very central to the experience of being transgender.
@Pte.Fletcher5 ай бұрын
@@NorthernRealmJackal Actually the vast majority of post-transition trans women I know and have seen look indistinguishable from many cis women you see in day to day life. Portrayal like this in media actually cause MORE issues, since they make audiences think that trans women always look masculine. Another important thing is the fact that I said they look like cis women you see in day to day life, of course they aren't going to look like supermodels (there are some who do of course).
@Niawka5 ай бұрын
@@Pte.Fletcher but in this time setting she wouldn't have access to hormonal therapy, so she wouldn't have a similar experience to modern trans women, and the movie starts with her as biological male. There are pictures of a real person this story was inspired by, hiring a trans woman who's indistinguishable to a natural born woman wouldn't make sense
@offbranddorito96685 ай бұрын
@@NiawkaBut there are trans women who have not had facial feminization surgery who would be great for the role. I would agree if it was an artistic choice…. But I think the people doing the casting were just lazy. And from what other comments are saying, it sounds like the movie totally misrepresented the real woman’s life in order to tell a stereotypical narrative.

Lili was a real person who really did undergo an early vaginoplasty, but the book that the movie was based on is not meant to be a biography by any means. The author has said herself that she made up many of the characters
@ferdinand3und4zig5 ай бұрын
It's very loosely based on Lili Elbe. Like is some of the people and events but entirely different narrative. I think a very harmful one. And Eddie Redmayne regrets doing the movie because of that, and the message that a man playing a trans woman sends.
@ferdinand3und4zig5 ай бұрын
I'd say there a two mayor things the movie got wrong. Lili Elbe did not die during the surgery and her marriage did not suffer at all. Both representative of very typical harmful transphobic stereotypes. Already would be kinda problematic if it was an entirely fictional story, but claiming it to be the story of a real person is pretty bad.

Robin Williams wasn't playing a genre other than his own. He was playing a man pretending to be a woman, that's a whole other thing. just like Eddie, he's a special case compared to Angelina and Tilda.

Eddie Redmayne's transformation in The Danish Girl was truly stunning.

Glenn Close as Albert Nobbs! Very underrated actress & superb role! She should have won an Oscar a long time ago, she was in the rank of Meryl Streep! If we are only considering dramas into this, otherwise plenty more!
