#Interview Campaign #Actress
In this video Indian actress Nandita Das talks about the obsession of Indians for a fair skin. Nandita has lent her support to the 'Dark is Beautiful' campaign that celebrates being dark. Dark is Beautiful is an awareness campaign that seeks to draw attention to the unjust effects of skin color discrimination. It's launched in 2009 by Women of Worth, the campaign challenges the belief that the value and beauty of people is determined by the fairness of their skin. This belief and media message shapes society and it gives countless people, young and old, a low self-esteem.

Dark is beautiful😍 ! Yes. Im a dark skinned Indian girl. Since my childhood I was worrying about my complexion😭. But it took me a lot of years to realize that dark is beautiful! Now, I have come out of the illusion that fair is lovely! It really needs some intelligence to break the illusion! Dear Dark girls, we are beautiful! God has gifted us this lovely skin tone! Don't be ashamed of it. Only stupid people say that dark is ugly. Come out and be confident! ☺️😎 And thank you so much Nandita Das😘

@@dereshnireddy3924 I am generalizing because as you said, some men do that. But till this point in my life I have seen women majorly doing it. Us men just go gaga on features and curvatures 😅 and I am typical Punjabi. I have seen women playing this game of competition of looks and beauty where they would try to put others down on the basis of color. They do it in very subtle way. Where as Men on the other hand look at features and be like 😍.

It's nice to hear someone directly talk about Bollywood's color issues for a change--I used to watch Bollywood films ll the time, and it always disturbed me how usually (especially in the last 10 years or so) how Bollywood's leading ladies usually seem to be chosen for the lead if they look more "white" than Indian, or anything else, for that matter. Heck, even in a South Indian film I saw once, virtually the whole cast was dark-skinned, but the romantic interest was--yep, you guessed---light-skinned! And I don't think that just happened by happenstance. I've seen Das in a few good films--Five Women, EK DIn 24 Ghante, and Aks---all pretty good films, BTW--props to her for bringing a serious issue like this to the forefront.

She's not allowed to talk about the stigma around having dark skin? How is talking about accepting people for who they are equivalent to hating pale skinned people? Have you seen the advertisements for fairness creams in India, and how badly they insult dark skinned people? She's allowed to defend her own skin colour, which is the skin colour of most Indians. She's allowed to be confident. Most of the mainstream films in India are focused on women's looks and glamour. They have unreal storylines and ignore the reality lived by most Indian people. Ofcourse, there are some really good mainstream films such as the ones made by Aamir Khan, but the majority are based on delusion. I prefer art films, which are more grounded. Nandita has every right to defend her job, and who she is. If the mainstream film stars can defend their silly films, why can't she?

it's so true when you said that young girls (like me) are intellectually aware that dark complexion is not the problem, but the situation and circumstances around them make them think about it. I believe the obsession is market created in India. It's sad because the most lighter skinned people want their skin be tanned. The skin color is all nature's way of survival. The parts of the world where sun exposure is high, skin colors are darker to protect skin from sun burn. The countries where sun exposure is low, skins are lighter to help create enough vitamin D with smaller sun exposure. The darker skins age more gracefully and less prone to skin cancer.

I have myself been on the receiving end a lot of times what with sales persons coming up to me and cajoling me to try some product which will supposedly remove my 'tan'. Or neighbors asking me to drink less coffee to lighten my skin. Being the dark daughter of a fair skinned mother often drew laments from 'well wishers' who would tell Mom that I would have been more beautiful if I had taken her skin tone!

In Australia similar campaigns are aimed at women to darken their skin tone to be 'attractive'. People have their skin burnt and have chemicals sprayed on them which usually gives skin an orange complexion, appearing patchy. All skin tones are natural thus all skin tones are attractive. I'm a 'white' Australian who respects Nanditas' point of view in her career, and also sees her as one of the most beautiful women in the world.

Originally Indians used to consider being dark means beautiful. Lord Krishna is dark. God Vishnu the sustainer of life force is dark. Hence Indians always wished that their children be dark. It used to be an ancient Indian belief that skin turns white when the soul departed from body, or the soul is not properly attached to the body (sick people turning pale and white). This craziness towards fair skin started happening only after 10th century.

@Meenaxi Totally agree, your comments are very well put. It is time we realise our own hypocrisy, it is time we value and endorse the deeper essentials rather than superficiality

Please read the following passage from Marco Polo the famous traveller who visited India in 11th century. He clearly notes down Indian's love towards darkskin. Now the infatuation towards fairskin has reached to a crazy proportions that they even changed the colour of Lord Krishna in the TV serials!

There is no way to divorce this issue from the violence and colonialism that has brought this on. When it is embedded in the religion, the caste and the culture, the only thing that could overturn the current desire is cease from appealing to those who enslaved and oppressed them. Fall out of love with white culture and you will at the same time fall in love with your own!

@@esecallum Are you for real? I belong to so called upper caste and I am dusky. So what? Noone bullies anyone. It's bollywood stereotype. Mostly fair skinned obsession goes to haryana, punjab etc region. Not much to even UP bihar. Because even 90% north Indians are dark.

Yeah, it's great that Nandita Das is physically beautiful...but she is also an a brilliant actress (I start tearing up and need to reach out for tissues every time I see the beginning and the climax of Kannathil Muthamittal), and from this video, I can also tell she is a well spoken, intelligent, and an overall cheery and happy person. She's a great role model for the young men and women of India. :)

In this video Indian actress Nandita Das She is really an outstanding performer. she is really an intelligent actress. she knows well all about the True performing Art by her self and by her smart Expressions. she really influences always in her performance intellectually . I am really impressed by her deep thinking intellectual personality . she is a True Beauty of an Indian Film industry in her natural looks and color .. She talks about the obsession of Indians for a fair skin.Nandita has lent her support to the 'Dark is Beautiful' campaign that celebrates being dark. Please view this video and interact on www.facebook.com

These ideas of whiteness and beauty date back many centuries in our country (with the idea of varna in caste system, which means color) and became stronger with colonial mind-set.

yea, and if you noticed it burns him. I was interested in dating east indian men until i learned that the reason i was turned down was because I am african dark. That really messes ya up as a black woman. I tried dating outside my race in general only to learn majority of men prefer lighter skin women.

What is even more stupid, and bizarre at the same time, is that this kind of discrimination also occurs among Africans, the darkest people of all. I'm from African origin and happen to be the darkest in my family. Some of my relatives were consistently mocking me because of my dark skin tone. I've never took it seriously though. I've never understood what's all the fuss about skin colour.

I have a reference from an ad of nivea where Arjun Rampal sir, mentions you should look as you are not some shades lighter.. Should their be a change in mentality of Indian society. Why women should be always fair. Feeling hilarious when I see beautiful dusky actresses promote fairness products. Skin care is essential but changing complexion is absolutely not necessary.

Good job. You are an inspiration to many. However, in regards to that in the “West” some people do tanning and comparing to the obsession with whiteness in India, I think there is a big difference. People in the West I think do tanning to look beautiful, a change of skin, a style - like a certain type of haircut... but in India and other Asian countries people want to become “fair” because they feel inferior. One is for beauty other is because of inferiority complex.. fed through marketing, media, colonial hangover and colonial mentality.

No body feels inferior its just a matter of human nature !!You always want what you dont have .Most of Indians are brown so they want to be pale and a lot of white people want to be tanned coz they have awfully pale skin .I am a light skinned Indian and i tan my legs in summer lol what is the big deal ??

richa vashisht Why in your culture do you NEVER see very dark skin in the media? Also you criticize her in a previous comment for making fun of light skin indian, which she didn't, but quoted white people as awfully pale skin???

THANK GOD I AM WHITE: I am ashamed that at one point in my life I was led to believe that “whiter” was better, don’t get me wrong, no one ever explicitly told me that “darker” was bad or to hate anyone because of their skin color, we are all equally capable of doing great things, the fact that some people have less opportunity than others does not make them inferior and enjoying certain privileges because of your skin color does not make you superior either, Racism is the veil that has been pulled over our eyes to blind us from the truth, the people who control the true wealth in this world, the REAL power, want us to live a lie, to be too busy looking at culture, skin color, hair texture, facial features... to notice anything else, they want us to think that even if we aren’t doing so great, at least we aren’t “black” or “indians” or “insert any other ridiculous descriptive here”, its all a lie to keep the poor in line, to keep us thinking we aren’t doing so bad, to keep us thinking we aren’t poor too and that if we work hard enough, we could be rich and powerful one day too. This is precisely what Racism boils down to even in the 21st century. Much love to everyone out there, we are all equal, never let anyone tell you any different.
