This is so needed. I hate that people get more outraged about black women speaking about colorism than colorism itself. Millions of dark-skinned females across the world all share similar experiences. It's not a coincidence and it's not made up. Colorism is real. Its alive and kicking. Whoever says it's a "preference" can miss me with that mess. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with a preference but I always have to wonder "why?" especially if it's a dark-skinned man who is claiming to only like light-skin, because it often comes from a place of hate. There's a problem when a group of people collectively uplift everything except that which resembles them. This "preference argument is disingenuous, and it's intellectually dishonest to use it to try to dismiss colorism. Most of the time when people explain why they prefer light-skin, the first thing they say is "..because dark-skinned is X". You don't need to drag dark-skin throught the dirt in order to affirm your so-called preference for light-skin. Leave dark-skinned women alone, leave them out of it and move the hell on with your 'preference'.
@nabilaoladele80166 жыл бұрын
Literally this. I don't understand why people keep making this about envy. It's nothing to do with that. It just shows how much of a pedestal light-skin has been elevated on.. Somehow we've gotten to the point where you can't speak about colorism without people thinking you're somehow jealous of light-skinned people.. So stupid and egocentric.

+Angeliculture You are making people with preference justify it by arguing its racist, stop manipulating society. You say the preference argument is disingenuous but provide no evidence for this other than the fact that people try to justify it with because dark skin is X. Take a non issue like chest hair I have heard some women say they like chest hair because having no chest hair is weird and seems immature, does that mean its disingenuous to say that is preference? Listen plenty of people, hell almost everyone, have characteristics that are, on average, unattractive to the opposite sex I still fail to see how you justify separating skin tone from chest hair, nose size, body shape, ear shape, nail size, eyelash/eyebrow shape, face symmettry, freckles etc.

I have to agree with the500. Being attractive is not a human right. You don't need to follow media stereotypes. I find it very shallow of people who do so, to the extent of feeling victimised becuase others in the lime light have a 'nicer' tone of skin. Get over it, you're not a super model, focus on other aspects in life. The only thing holding you back is your self. Insecurities come from within.
@rickitamorgan14896 жыл бұрын
Mr Sam I didn't hear anyone state that anyone had a "nicer" tone of skin, just lighter, they are not synonymous. Me personally I feel as if deep brown skin is a beautiful and useful tone of skin. Useful in the sense as it acts as a preserver and protection from the natural light of our planet ie the sun. Insecurities do NOT only come from within, they most definitely are instilled by outside forces. Although I will agree with you partly because within is where you will have to fight against these lingering feelings of inadequacy and self doubt. IMO

Yes I'm caramel color , and I get a lot of jealousy comments from my cousins that I'm stuck up or think I'm all that ... My mom is dark skin and I've heard her say a lot of stuff about lighter skinned girls , not me but other people. Like "why she got on all that makeup , she just think she all that cause she light skin" , or "of course she gonna wear that because she think those guys gonna look at her cause that color on her " and I don't say nothing but it makes me sad cause I can't help I'm a lighter skin tone 😭😔 like dark or brown skin girls , look at u so mean sometimes , and rolling they eyes , like wtf.. and than my mom be saying stuff like wear this color lip stick or this color hair , u light skin so it'll look right on u , and I'm just like , why should it matter , it can go anybody , if u fix yourself up right .. idk it might not be as worse as how dark girls are treated but we do deal with stuff too . And it's the black men that be talking about them not us girls !!! And because of the hurt they experience, they put us down , and make us seem like we in the wrong and make us feel bad , and talk about us like dogs and they put they selves on a high pedestal and say stuff like us dark girls are gold, gods and queens , like they try to make us seem like we ain't black because they post nothing but the dark girls and title it black woman like we don't matter . And they making their self seem no better than the black men that put them down dark woman for white and light woman . And most of the time those light woman don't even be from that black race, they be Mexican , Asian , Hispanic, putero Rican and white woman ! I also think they get black light skins mixed up with them !!! Not saying black girls don't have curly hair , but most of those light skin girls with straight and curly hair be from other races !!! And I doubt a black men would date a black light skin girl with 4c hair ... I mean some do, but the ones the capture usually be with curly hair from another race or a damn white woman . I know dark woman have been through hell but it's like now , black lighter woman are silently being excluded and bullied in the process of y'all uplifting y'all selves and it makes me sad . And it also makes me sad how my family think cause I'm kinda light that I automatically look right with everything I put in my face or hair . It makes my cousins that's dark feel bad . And I'm a black girl regardless of what my skin color is

💓Princess Yonna💓 I personally say as a light skin black person that I’ve never faced discrimination. But also Idk is I’m light skinned or not (I’m in the verge of brown) Dark skin woman face more difficulties I believe. The point is not to say light skin people don’t face difficulties too. But the people who are being affected most in the world by colorism is darker skinned people. In the black community they label dark skinned girls ugly and ratchet all the time. The praise people claim dark skinned people get is mostly online not real life. Your mom telling you that you can wear this and that makeup is true. Because you know what: dark skinned usually don’t get that privellage. Not to be rude but you sound kind of butthurt. From my personal experience growing up in the hood and going to public schools, is that dark skinned black girls are hated on and light skin people are idiolized. And you know who usually calls these people ugly: light skinned people. I think the comments from others only affect you if your insecure 🤷🏿♀️ Never once have I felt less black because I am light skin but I have seen people put *me* on pedestals. It’s not fair it never is. Especially since instead of seeing multiple dark skinned woman in the media we see lots of like skinned individuals 🤷🏿♀️ Light skin people need to stop ignoring colorism and start understanding that people who are darker have to face many different diffuculties. I just can’t feel sympathy for you. Being misrepresented in the media as ghetto and ratchet, being taunted by your own people, never seeing skin like your on a tv screen, and being compared to burnt things is what lots of dark skinned people face. If you really are proud of being black then you don’t need anyone’s validation and that’s the tea ☕️ sis warm and hot for you.💅🏽Be proud and support dark skinned woman because we as a whole and the media put them down.

We've all seen light skinned girls rejected or scrutinized by the black community. Ppl questioning their 'blackness' or hate on them just because they're light. It's colorist. It's wrong. i understand what you're saying and they do need to be included, they should admit their privilege and understand how they perpetuate colorism as for their blackness or race being questioned that is not right and it should stop, i always tell me friends and family to stop assuming a person is mixed because of their light complexion, however their "struggle" does not compare to the institutionalised structure that is colorism that SOLELY affects dark-skinned people because colorism is the oppression of darker skinned people to benefit lighter skinned people the same way racism is the oppression of minority to uplift white people and therefore the same way no minority can be racist to a white person no dark-skinned person can be colorist to a light-skinned person.

Bully me about my appearance, especially because I have dark skin. She'd call me names relating to my skin colour. And now she's "famous", she's now surrounded by people of my skin colour and suddenly wants to be associated with it because she knows that with the kind of music she makes, the audience most of the time are people that look like me. When I was in China my tutors used to favour my light skinned friend and didn't want anything to do with me. My aunt always verbalizes her disappointment when she sees me. My grandpa didn't like holding dark skin babies. When I'm around my cousins ppl think I'm adopted. And guys in Sri Lanka only want to marry very light skinned guys. My cousins are like pale and they get asked out alot. I had a school mate who was very beautiful and very nice but dark skinned. She married a guy but he left her even though he was dark skinned too. Beauty should not have a set form. Beauty should come in all shapes and sizes. I'm light brown and guys still complain over my skin colour. They like everything else about me but the main issue with me is the skin colour.

As a mixed women, I see colorism a whole lot. I refuse to date or even talk to any man that disrespects dark skinned women. My mother is dark skinned, so by disrespecting black women, your are disrespecting my mother and my black side of the family. And my ex boyfriend even told my best friend, who is really dark skinned, that she’s beautiful for a black woman. So he’s implying that black women are normally ugly? Mixed people do face discrimination too, but can I say i’ve faced more discrimination than my dark skinned siblings? No, I can’t. I don’t understand their struggle and I don’t know what they go through on a daily basis. I know it’s horrible, but black men aren’t making it any better, especially if they put down dark skinned women as if it’s gonna impress light skinned women. Colorism is real. You can deny it all you want, but mixed people in general benefit in society for having lighter skin.

I think this this details a small amount of information on how deep and discriminating colorisim really is or how far such attitudes go... It's not about dark skin women complaining about people's preferences to lighter skinned women ..its more about people's ideals of beautiful ! They are young women trying to expose an ugly uninformed mind set that thinks only light skinned women are beautiful in Asian, Arab and black community's we have 100% all heard and seen that mindset ...most older generations pride themselves on being lighter skinned a colonial mindset !! As a make up artist I feel all shades are beautiful in general..and as a black women I feel all shades of brown that represent my ethnicity are gorgeous ..darker skinned women are some of the most beautiful women on the planet ..there is nothing ugly about dark skin .. Oh and also let's be more honest in our conversations ! Cut threw the bs! Most music artists etc choose light skinned women or white women not because they are beautiful but they are used to sell a more acceptable image of Blackness!! If more artists put dark skinned women in their videos it would help to dispel this image and mindset! Kmt We need to see more black ppl full stop and more darker skinned women of all nationalities on our tv screens so that women of colour are seen in their beautiful shades of skin tone! And any darker skinned woman who acts like she don't agree like colorisim don't exist is lying to herself!

If you don't like dark skin girls that's fine. I don't want any man who doesn't want me. But don't get mad if a woman prefers a 6ft man with a six pack body, because a lot of guys get mad at women's preferences when women reject them.
@JESUSLOVESYOU2196 жыл бұрын
G B a woman wanting a tall man is completely different to him wanting a light skin woman because he's been told all his life that they look "better" even when their own mother is dark. Women want to feel protected so a man being taller gives that illusion and sense of security. It's not the "tallness" per say that they prefer but more so the feeling of protection. So there's no similarity.
@INAN22226 жыл бұрын
Your commentary is appreciated but I agree with the logical direction of Winna Ag. Colorism is rooted in White Supremacist conceptions of attractivess while male height is rooted in patriarchal conceptions of attractiveness. Both are problematic and need be dismantled. However, I do follow your confusion towards the sentiments of men towards height, especially men who protect patriarchy yet concurrenlty complain about patriarchal evaluations of manliness (big, tall, & strong).
@the_emmasculator6 жыл бұрын
There's a difference between a preference and between saying all people who don't look like this are ugly. Colorism connotates the outright rejection of anything dark.
@digthewarmth6 жыл бұрын
The Emmasculator I think the height issue is a fair comparison to colorism in that a lot of women do immediately write off shorter guys. They cringe and turn their nose up if a short man tries to talk to them, so they are outright rejecting anyone short. For the taller women who do this, they feel that a guy shorter than them can't protect them; and for the shorter women, they don't want a short guy because they don't want short children, which is similar to how dark skinned males don't want dark children so they say they don't date dark girls. Both are fucked up and based on what society deems good and standard.

I never really had to face this issue myself, but recently my 6 year old Indian cousin who is dark skinned told me that she wished she could have skin/eyes like mine. And then I began to pick up other little things. She'd always colour in girls in her colouring book with light skin and blue/green eyes, telling me that that was pretty. She told me her mum told her to stay out of the sun in fear of becoming darker. What kind of self-esteem can a CHILD have believing their ethnic features are not "pretty"? This is an issue which is internal to our own communities. No matter what the root of this issue is (perhaps colonialism), it is up to ourselves to empower our children and teach them to love themselves.
@DM-bh2gg6 жыл бұрын
Was she thought by someone to think that light skin and blue eyes are beautiful, or she think that by herself? Because, lets be honest, when you ask a kid which is not influenced by any racial things, which color is most beautiful, 99% will say: blue, red, yellow, pink, green, purple, or something like that. In almost all the cases it will be a color in rainbow spectrum. So, is it just possible that those traits that almost all consider beautiful, are considered as such because of its intrinsic beauty? Or, should we teach children that they can't consider blue or red as their favorite color because it is insult to grey or brown?
@user-xb5rl6wt5j6 жыл бұрын
You make a good point! That challenges my point on the colouring at least; maybe she was just choosing her favourite colour. Although, regardless, colourism is still an issue in the Indian community and many others; the idea that light skin is beautiful and dark skin is ugly is still perpetuated, and it's no secret. For a group of people who don't naturally have those traits, it's a harmful idea.
@DM-bh2gg6 жыл бұрын
I'm not expert on Indian beauty standards, or any other as a mater fact. I learned through internet that light skin and eye color are preferred as beauty standard in most parts of the world. When I got into this subject, I looked a lot of different videos by all races. One interesting video is about this dark skin black beauty which is unanimously recognized as such by all of her own black race (man and woman): kzbin.info/www/bejne/faXGh3ScgauDj6M And I agree with comments that this girl is extraordinarily beautiful (as seen in 1:15). However, facial characteristics and eye color of this girl are not typical black race girl, but they belong to light skinned white or Latino group. Long narrow nose, light eyes, overall shape of the face. Yes, she have dark skin and black curly hair (although, as they say in comments, a soft hair, not a typical afro-textured hair), but that do not harm her beauty. From all of that I conclude next: 1. Primary condition of beauty standard worldwide is related to facial characteristics. 2. Those facial characteristics that are recognized as beautiful (by all, as we see in upper video) are typically related to light skinned population. 3. So, by association, it is presumed that beauty is in light color, although it is only secondary source, not a primary. So, when we combine a facial characteristics of light skinned people with natural color of their eyes (which belong to rainbow spectrum) you have what you have. This, of course, do not belong to all light skinned so it is true that that dark skinned black lady if prettier than great majority of light skinned girls, but that don't change the fact that facial characteristic of even that black lady generally belong to light skinned population. So, as I concluded, light peoples characteristics are not considered beautiful because of media influence, but rather, mass media only shows what everyone already inherently recognize as beautiful.

Yeah I agree. I always see more women fawning over the likes of Chris Brown, Michael Ealy, Jesse Williams or others before they decided they were canceled for other reasons....however with women being traditionally valued and pursued for their beauty as opposed to their other qualities (intelligence, empathy, job security, etc), women are more likely to attach their self-esteem to their looks, which will plummet if they feel undesirable. Especially since most of the beauty industry is geared/marketed towards women. So I understand why they emphasize the struggles of colourism for women more than men, but it doesn't mean men are not affected also. It's not a competition lol...facts are facts.

I remember staying inside in summers because I was too afraid to come back to school and hear “GIRL YOU GOT DARK!”. I actually used a skin lightening sunscreen from the beauty store at summer camps so I wouldn’t get dark. I didn’t realize how traumatizing that was until I got older. I’m in love with my skin now. I think it’s the most gorgeous color but I had to learn to love it.

The Indian girl who voiced her opinions on Bollywood..I completely agree with her. To further elaborate, an Indian director had said that most directors are inclined.to caste a light skin actress as the lead role as that gives a more girl next door look and sense of innocence...where ass dark skinned actress gives a more erotic look and is used for affair scenes etc. Bollywood has a long way to go. But they are giving young girls the wrong impression, which is why many of them start turning to extremes like bleaching their skins etc etc it's sad. Bollywood needs to be realistic.

Ive gotten some black people who think im light skin and other ones who see me as brown skin but never dark skin. Colorism is real though and Ive had men treat me better over a darker skinned black girl just because they think I don't look as black. Its messed up but no one would admit that they do this until you point it out to them or they might ask me what my background is to determine my mixture. Dark skin black is beautiful. Come on guys. A preference of lighter colour has always been a thing. It's something very deeply rooted into all kinds of cultures. Don't say it is not real. When it obviously is..
@mrblackalchemist6 жыл бұрын
Joshualacruz you can't just have a preference out of thin air. Most light skinned black women are mixed with other races. THEREFORE they tend to have different features than full blooded ones, most of which men have more attraction to. The thing dark skinned girls dodge is they do feel lighter skinned girls are better looking. The colorism I take issue with is not allowing a person to get a job because they are too dark. Also you don't see any heavy set women in music videos or women in their fifties whatsoever.

There's also been a preference for darker skin, but lighter skin people took them over and forced them to change their views.
@Joshualacruz6 жыл бұрын
Foxxy18 I don't think it has to do with forse. Just culture. Think about it, white, or light is always better then black or dark. If something is white you can easily determine if it's clean or not. Anything associated with heavens is with heavens. Anything holy or good (in tales) is white. Darkness is associated with unclear, unsafe, dirty, evil. For the longest time this is why the rich people put on white products as make up. Not only in the west. The Asians still do it. If you're not super white, you must be a poor worker in the field, always under the sun. Dirty and poor and probably sick and disgusting and less of a human being than us, the rich and good looking... Well, that's how they thought a couple decades ago anyway. The darker-skinned believed it too. I mean how can you not? No wonder we still have similar thoughts. Not as intense, thankfully, but it is there, somewhere in the back of our culture.
@Joshualacruz6 жыл бұрын
mrblackalchemist I am not sure what point you're trying to make.. But yeah, of course you can have a preference out of mere air. Actually most of your preferences are out of mere air. The culture you live in + the way you react on that culture = most of your preferences. Not because you carefully tried everything and objectively researched every possible option you prefer the taste of vanilla ice cream over mint ice cream or vica versa. Look at dogs for example. They definitely know something is tasty and what is not. Also they eat literally shit. And enjoy it. Why don't we? Because we learned from our culture it's disgusting and unhygienic. We don't need a taste test. Or a "you'll learn to enjoy it." Hell no. So basically preference out of tin air. 😁

You look like you work in the street market", " Lol just look at her. She's short and black. Who would want her?" And some of these remarks aren't towards me but someone else who has dark skin. I know all your saying is true. I'm valuable as I am with my dark chocolate skin. But It’s so disturbing at work when I find most people want to avoid being seen with me, even on breaks. I thought it was my character but it's not because if I was a bad person I'd have lost my job etc. I know I'm a good person because I'm very giving and friendly. my so called friends only want to talk to me in private like in toilets it's sad but true. If she's feeling guilty she will ask me out to lunch on a different floor where we'll sit secluded and not be seen. It's so strange for me because coming from Africa and having been in a private school for six years with white, African and Asian descent students I never experienced what I'm seeing now in the heart of England where's there's equality and diversity laws etc. I had a mixed race friend who treated me the same. And then a friend from India is like that too. In my work place there aren't many black people, you can count them on one hand and I have tried making friends with them, they seem afraid to hangout together. All the blacks either sit by themselves or are close with white people another you talk to them they treat you like you're so different. I'm not criticising the attitude of white people here. I'm just saying I am shocked at other races like Asian people who think my dark skin is dirty. I just don't get it- the high and mighty of it. It's really sad. It makes me want to leave the job. But I love my color, I'm chocolatey like Galaxy :-), so I'll just keep calm and carry on being me.

The movement among dark-skinned girls to be proud of who they are inspired me, a white lady, because within the white community there is prejudice against girls who don't get dark tans. You are repeatedly told you look unhealthy, even as a child by adults. You are mocked and bullied and told you look like a ghost (something a guy I dated said to me). I was inspired by dark skinned girls to stop trying to look different, stop getting burned so I'd get a bit of a tan (the only way I can tan) and say "yes I have pale skin, no I don't tan, and I can still be pretty."
