The director, James Cameron, was very inexperienced as a director and most of the crew working on the film had little faith in his vision for a sequel to a classic sci-fi movie, but he was so invested in making this film he actually spent a million of his own money on one of the practical effects, that weilding torch seen at the beginning of the movie. The theatrical cut has some scenes missing that add a ton of context to the movie, like Ripley having a daughter, showing the colonists, the gun turret sequences and Newts parents, the ship from the original movie, were all absent from the theatrical cut. I remember seeing this movie years after seeing it in the movie theater and being like "wait, I don't remember any of that", and most fans of the movie seem to agree that the extended version you watched is the definitive way of viewing the movie and I agree. This is Carrie Henn's, the actress who played Newt, her one and only movie role. I believe the guy who played Apone had served in the US marine core during Vietnam, which ironically or maybe internationally this movie was influenced by. Last bit of trivia I can think of off the top of my head; Sigourney Weaver originally didn't want to come back for the sequel but she loved the screenplay and script so much, how her character was portrayed she signed on.

Thank you so much for watching the director cut! The whole subplot of Ripley being a mom with a deceased daughter was cut from the theatrical release. It gives even more gravitas to her protecting Newt. And when Newt calls her "Mommy" at the end... just damn. Love it. One more thing, best description of Alien and Aliens was one of the producers David Giler (sp?) - he called Alien the "Haunted House" - and Aliens the "Roller Coaster." Perfect descriptions of the two.

"One more thing, best description of Alien and Aliens was one of the producers David Giler (sp?) - he called Alien the "Haunted House" - and Aliens the "Roller Coaster." Perfect descriptions of the two" And yet the plot of the 2nd stripped of the action fluff resembles the original so much that anyone watching with a purely objective eye would be inclined to call Aliens a soft reboot. Not to mention that the art design of the 2nd is a very poor comparison to the 1st - the sets look mostly standard industrial where the original had very unique looking sets 😒 In short I'd say that all the action just covers for Cameron producing a straight up remake with moar of everything. Much of the 'special' edition added footage was cut not just because it extended the runtime, but also because it makes it that much more obvious how much Cameron is reusing plot points from the Alien script. Don't get me wrong - he's made some great films, but IMHO The Abyss was a much more original 'alien' movie for him to make.

So many brilliant things Cameron did with this film. The way Ripley loses her daughter, and Newt loses her parents. And then beyond that, Ripley and Newt are the same kind of person. Because of how detailed the first film's suit was, it had cost quite a bit of money to make. Cameron toned down the level of detail, which goes unnoticed as the xenomorphs are coming from the shadows to begin with, making the production of the suits far cheaper, and more flexible for the actors to move in, thus giving them their iconic quick movements.

This movie has one of the smartest bits I've writing I've ever seen, letting them fit exposition, a character moment, and a scare in one. When Burke first meets Ripley, he introduces himself and sets up that storyline...but then it's all just a nightmare Ripley is having. Yet when we see Burke again, they've already met and we can just assume their first meeting went the same, minus the chestburster. So character introduction done, setting up Ripley's PTSD, and a fright for the audience, all at the same time.

In the first movie, Ash (the android) didn't do what he did because he was fascinated by the alien (though, admittedly, he was). He did what he did because the company gave him orders to bring the alien back, "all other orders rescinded," and specified that the crew was expendable. Ash didn't go crazy, malfunction, or go rogue, he was just doing what he was ordered to do by their employers. In this movie, when they say the "artificial person" on the Nostromo "malfunctioned," the company is just gaslighting to cover up their part in what happened.

"when they say the "artificial person" on the Nostromo "malfunctioned," the company is just gaslighting to cover up their part in what happened" Actually the script of Aliens does give this something of an out. The story implies that Burke is acting entirely on his own to gain financial advantage in claiming rights over the xenomorph science, and you could interpret the same in the company not knowing about the orders from 57 years ago. Weyland Yutani is literally an interstellar conglomerate enterprise - it stands to reason that this constitutes a LOT of moving parts within the corporate structure, and that not all of them necessarily talk to each other.
@cherylsims5636
@cherylsims5636 Жыл бұрын
@@mnomadvfx Well in Promethius the original Peter Weyland has made David the first robot. David is the one who ends up in Alien Covenant. Ash would have been the first commercially made robot, but recall the line where they said Ash was replaced 2 days before departure. The company knew Weyland disappeared in the LV system just didnt know why Bishop is the second made robot, after Ash and has those new behavioral inhibators.

@mnomadvfx
@mnomadvfx Жыл бұрын
"Such a different movie from the original" Excepting the Newt thing (which can be interpreted as a replacement of Jonesey anyway) the plots are actually EXTREMELY similar from beginning to end which elements simply rearrangeed in places. Aliens just has an action focus to cover the similarities and MOAR of everything to overwhelm you with it - except art design quality that is. O'Bannon/Giger/Cobb's Alien s**ts all over Cameron et al's basic art design in Aliens - really lazy work and then some. The xenomorphs were made to be less detailed so that they could get more action movement out of them faster, but with the amount of time Cameron had to work on Aliens before shooting it (he started his Aliens script before making The Terminator) that is a poor excuse to say the least. The sole redeemer is Syd Mead's work on the Sulaco exterior and other assorted parts he was brought in to design - the rest is pretty basic industrial work that literally could have been lifted straight out of the power station they used for a set location.

Cool trivia: when James Cameron was casting for the role of "Newt", every child actor that came in gave a cute, sweet smile after delivering their lines during the audition. Carrie Henn was the only actress who gave an absolutely dead-serious audition of a traumatized child suffering from PTSD.... Cameron hired her on the spot 😳🤓👍👍

As always Clariss great reaction and I love that you appreciate different aspects of movies you watch. I call this Aliens movie. Ripley gets a husband and child. :) Joking aside this is the lady heroes I love. She wasn't overpowered or flawless. Ripley struggled with PTSD and used in ingenuity and bravery to get her through tough parts. She was tough and brave, but also compassionate, kind, and witty She cared about everyone. She risked her own life multiple times to help the marines. Her and Hicks bond was great, and I like that they showed that he taught her about the rifle. I love the comment "You started this show me everything."

I think it was a hal 2000 scenario. He was given an order to return whatever they find (i believe it was a standard order that was set to activate in certain situations, in this case discovery of alien life/technology) as the priority was to return with the specimen as a priority above everything else (crew included) he focused on protecting the alien instead of the crew. As the company programed him puts profit first, they didn't think of a situation where it would result in deaths, or assumed deaths would be minimal, and were probably thinking "new exotic pets" or "medical/scientific research" or even "cool advanced space technology" when they programed the special orders, not "super deadly killing machine" which is what burke thought when he heard about it

As an aside, the movie Prometheus, is the prequel to all Alien movies. Explains the large alien ship, and the being sitting in the chair. It's a race called Engineers. They seed life on planets and if they become dissatisfied with that life's progress, they seed another life, do destroy the first, and then themselves. They are responsible for Aliens humans and supposedly Predators and the technology for Replicants and Terminators!

Usually categorized as a horror film, "Aliens" is actually more akin to a war movie. Two militant adversaries jockeying for an advantage on an open battlefield. James Cameron was brilliant with his sequels, elevating the original story to greater heights, such as this, and Terminator 2.

I'd categorize it as a horror sequel, and as sequels so often are bigger they are seldom scarier - this is no exception. I'd watched Aliens over a dozen times before watching Alien without ever being scared - Alien was an entirely different kettle of fish and 100% worthy of the horror genre.

Back when movie making still was a craft and no video game. This Marine ground vehicle was actually used on airports pulling planes in their final positions. Back then a director needed to come up with stuff. Using props, building sets and try everything possible to let the audience see what he himself saw during the plot creation. All this without that fancy CGI. Love it.

When the Alien Queen tears Bishop in two, if I remember correctly from the audio commentary on the DVD, it took quite a few attempts before the fake head and body section landed in a way that was not either too unintentionally comical, in positions that were anatomically impossible or face-down (as what was about to happen required him to be face-up).

38:29 Ellen Ripley is one of the best characters in the entire history of cinema, she is the perfect hero, with exceptional charisma, who does what needs to be done and without any need for powers or other kind of magical stuff. please, don't spoil the good memories and good feelings that these two movies gave you by watching the other movies after these, if you want just watch the 2004 movie "alien vs predator", which is not bad at all, the other movies either are garbage (in part or in whole), or simply ruin what was done with the first 2.

The thing about Ripley being interviewed by the Company at the start, is they likely didn't know. They were beyond contact range (which is no longer the case by the time of Aliens) and the orders they had to follow were proxy ones programmed into Mother (and presumably Ash had some preprograming too)in case of alien life form contact or other possible scenarios. So because the ship was destroyed, all the logs of the contact would have gone with it, unless there were backups on the escape pod. If the beacon ran out of power in those 57 years and planet surveys didn't discover the alien ship, well you get a situation where Aliens is possible. All the company probably knew is, the Nostromo never returned from her deep space mission.
