A predator is a predator. The Yautja "Yah-oot-cha" (the species of the creature) are basically game hunters. They increase their prestige and rank in the clan by the more dangerous prey they take as trophies. Men are considered a decent prize because they are very crafty and have killed more than a couple predators. There are, of course, more dangerous prey in the universe though. They have their own rules e.g. they don't kill pregnant creatures, unarmed opponents, sickly or unthreatening opponents, and things they consider unworthy. If they do, they're considered "Bad blood" and are hunted with impunity and those who kill bad bloods are given more prestige within the clan.

I very much doubt that Billy was, in any way, trying to buy time. Guns and so on would have made that easier. As DrBeardfacePA said, he denied the hunter first blood, but I think Billy's intent was to stop being hunted. He knew he was dead, that he wasn't getting out of that jungle alive, and he could either go out on the _hunter's_ terms or on _his_ terms. He chose _his_ terms. If I'm gonna die anyway, then damn it _I_ choose where and how, not you. Exercising the only power he had. That's my take on it, anyway.

As a native, you hunt your target... but there is a time when the target recognizes you and makes a stand. Roles are reversed in this that is what Billy recognized we are being hunted by our own tactics, we cannot win, but he could do something to the predator to give Dutch more time and intel: I mark myself in my own blood, to see you in combat blade to blade.

I like that they never reveal too much of the Predator in this movie. The less you know about a horrific monster, the scarier he becomes. At the same time, each tiny reveal only begs more questions about the Predator. The less answered, the greater the intrigue. Which is likely why this film has endured for so long as a cult classic all these decades later! Gotta keep the horror real. Modern takes on the Predator reveal too much and makes them seem not so scary. If you wanna make a newer film, reveal a tiny bit of its lore. But make it so that each reveal only begs more questions. The formula from this original classic was perfect. My opinion. -OG

I actually think that Predators is the only sequel that does the expansion of the lore in this way. For everything else that is revealed about the monsters in predators, two more questions arise. In Prey, there is not much more to learn. Doesn't need to also, it expands in other directions and has a more unique story and setting. Edit: Low point of expanding the lore is "The Predator" from 2018. I think all other sequels will ignore that however ;P

Former Recon Marine here: Mac making a big deal about how much noise Dillon was making is a total Hollywood thing. When you're in the middle of the wilderness, animals actually make quite a bit of noise. It's not unnatural to hear constant scurrying and branches breaking. Therefore you don't have to walk like a ninja, and frankly with THAT much ammo, weapons, and gear, you wouldn't be able to anyway. As long as you're not making excessive noise, you're good. If they really wanted to be stealthy, they would only move at nighttime and would keep a low profile during daytime (basic principle of Reconnaissance). Fun Fact: Blain's character was played by Jesse Ventura, a real life SEAL. Technically he only served as a UDT (Underwater Demolition Teams) member which were the precursor to SEALs that weren't disbanded until 1984. He never deployed on a SEAL team, but he was still trained in BUDs and land warfare and went to Vietnam as a UDT member. In the making of Predator they had to calm him down around so many "soft" actors. Him chewing tobacco is actually something that practically all of them would've been doing in a real specops unit lol. It's very much part of the "grunt" culture in any combat arms unit. Them being grossed out by it or turning it down would've been out of character. I think him giving them crap for that in the movie is a tribute to his real life experience.

@@stephanginther9051 You can see a progression in Arnold's acting as his career goes along. Accordiong to John McTiernan, who directed *Predator* and *Last Action Hero* six years later, Arnold was working to sharpen his acting chops further for the latter film, and that he took it hard when *Last Action Hero* faltered. When you get to *True Lies* the following year, Arnold's acting in that film is legitimately good. But he's also playing against type in that film to a certain degree (Harry Tasker is a huge nerd as far as action heroes go), which gave him a chance to stretch himself. Some would argue that his performance in *Conan the Barbarian* is a show of how good he was at physical acting, since there's not a lot of dialogue in the film. But some of that had to do with his English still being rough around the edges, to say nothing of his accent.

YES!!! GET TO DA CHOPPA!!! MY #1 FAVORITE ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER MOVIE!! Facts you didn't know about the movie: Jean Claude van Damme played the Predator in some parts of the movie, but quit production as he was tired of wearing the original suit which looked like a lizard insect hybrid. He even wanted to kickbox Arnold but the producers refused. Kevin Peter Hall, RIP, was cast as the titular character as he was more of an intimidating opponent for Arnold's character Dutch, 7'2". He even played the helicopter pilot at the end of the film when they rescue Dutch Fellow actor and bodybuilder, Sven Ole Thorson, a friend of Schwarzenegger's played the Russian officer who kills one of the hostages. Oscar Winning VFX company Stan Winston Studios designed the PREDATOR suit for the film and would later return to the franchise for PREDATOR 2 in 1990. Half the cast and crew got food poisoning except for Arnold and Director McTiernan whom ate Spaghetti O's and PBJ Sandwiches like Ford and Speilberg on Raiders Of The Lost Ark. Schwarzenegger would later hire his own personal Chef to give the actors the food they needed. No hot meals were allowed due to the heatwave in Mexico so they ate protein bars instead. The producers hired a bodyguard to protect people from Sonny Landham, RIP, whom played Billy, as he was prone to violent outbursts. Landham said in an interview that "We weren't making a movie, it was a survival story for all of us." It was 110° in the shade while it was 42° at night. It rained for 2 weeks making filming even more difficult. It was a box office success, making $100 million dollars ($360 million dollars today) against an $18 million dollar budget. It was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to InnerSpace. It's now considered to be one of the best Sci-fi Action movies ever made.

There's an often overlooked detail with the Predator using the voice recordings. It doesn't know the language so it tries using context clues to use them in the right way. A good example is at the end, when Dutch says "What the hell are you?" while standing over the defeated Predator. It thinks he's saying something to the effect of "I won", so it repeats that line back to him as it arms the bomb on its wrist. And since it also has no concept of laughter, it seems to assume Billy's laugh was a means of intimidation

Classic action-movie. :) The Predator was quite a formidable foe, but despite it's advanced equipment, one of them had a weakness that probably robbed it from more kills than it made: its camouflage. Many often call it invisibility-cloak, but the tech does not fully render them unspottable. It's called optic camouflage, which generally makes the user transparent by reflecting the surrounding area's image onto itself. This makes them somewhat easy to spot, specially when they move and even when standing still (if spectators look real closely, in the latter case), as opposed to being 100% invisible.

Predator, a timeless classic. One of the best parts is unlike 99 percent of the horror/slasher films of the times, the victims are not complete morons asking to be sliced to pieces. Dutch's team are all highly-trained specialists who know how to deal with intense situations. That's what makes the conflict so challenging to both the Predator and Dutch's men, and that's what gives us such a compelling story. And hell yes react to Terminator and Terminator 2!

The setting was a fictional Latin American state whose name was created for use by producer Steven E. Souza. The name was used in Commando, Die Hard 2, and Supercarrier. The word came froma Sheena comic. This has led to the shared reality theory behind these films. Dutch and Matrix are apparently twins. Val Verde translates to Green Valley. Many studios have lists of "approved names" for fictional countries used across all shows and films those studios produce, especially way back when.

I do not know if someone else provided this info, but it is my understanding that the blood of the Predator came from a glow stick. They needed something that would look good on screen, and they found the content of a glow stick looked great, and it was very inexpensive. Apparently they then went and picked up a bunch of the green glow sticks.

Always see everyone complaining about how unfair the fights are since Predator has such better technology, but I think that's what makes putting predator against alien so interesting. The predator's two main aids are useless against aliens, as they're cold blooded (no heat signature) and blind (camouflage doesn't matter).

I mean, the predator is a hunter - and that is how Hunters are. The rich dentist Shooting animals in the savannah has a jeep, a rifle, binoculars and a Ton of other stuff. The Lion He shoots is nearly unable to defend itself. In that regard, the predator might be a bit more fair towards its prey than we are.
@thejamppa

@@mappes1 That depends on if you're recreational hunter who hunts for fun. I don't like them or their motives. Most hunters I know here hunt for the food, help police find injured wild life and keeping animal numbers in check. I respect them. They do not let animal's go waste if law allows meat be used. I hate people who go shoot animal's just to get trophy or pictures and do not use meat and let it spoil as we are not above the nature. We are part of the nature and responsible for the nature its well being.

True. The predator however is more of the rich Dentist- type ;) maybe even a bit More fair, since it gives its prey at least a theoretical Chance to Best Him by slightly adjusting ist Arsenal depending on the capabilities of its foe.

Their masks have multiple different 'vision modes' or settings, allowing them to adapt to different types of prey. The 'mode' that was used in the first movie was designed to filter out all heat signatures that didn't match their prey, effectively highlighting them by removing all distractions (for lack of a better word). It was however so precisely tuned that even a slight deviation would cause the mask to filter out human heat signatures as well. The mud lowered Dutch's heat signature enough that the mask no longer recognized it as human, and thus caused it to filter him out.

The Predator clicking sound and certain vocal moments is done by voice actor Peter Cullen ( Optimus Prime ) of the original Transformers series from the 80's, certain subsequent animated shows and current slate of Transformers movies. You can catch the KZbin video of one of his Transformers convention appearances on how he came up with the sound, which were not aided by mechanized effects - - it was all him. Even though other voice actors have done vocals for the Predator in the following films, the clicking sound recording of the Predator were trademarked for use and is still exclusively performed by Cullen whenever you hear him. They may occasionally adjust the sound pitches or delivery for different Predator types.

T1 and T2 are must watch. T1 was James Cameron's break-out movie and he did had to do it on a shoestring budget since he had never directed a big studio film before. Cameron also lifted a concept from his favorite film at that time, Somewhere In Time (1980), and slipped it into T1 magnificently. T2 is in the rare air of sequels better than the first with Aliens, Empire Strikes Back, Godfather 2, Star Trek 2 Wrath of Khan, and Spiderman 2

As the description says "A Bro is a hyper-masculine action hero-style commando, who fights terrorists and rescues his/her bro teammates and prisoners of war from captivity. Bros are parodies of the fictional protagonists and antagonists of 80s and 90s action movies and TV series (with some more recent or older exceptions)." It's so hilarious and fun and is very much that 80s/90s vibe of "badass" heroes we have all grown up with.

33:05 One of my favorite things that some subtitles mention and others don't: the hunter is mimicking Billy's laugh at Dutch. So not only does this movie bring the "big pussy joke" subplot back around, it also adds to the lore that the hunter can mimic the cries of its prey even without technological aid, and also mocks Dutch by throwing the calls of his deceased pack member back at him. Exit Dutch, pursued by the laughter of a dead man.

I'm not sure if someone has answered your question at 18:40 about how they did the Predator's blood, but if not: it's actually a practical effect - it's a mixture of KY Jelly and the liquid that's inside a green glowstick As an aside, the Predator was originally going to be played by a pre-fame Jean-Claude Van Damme and look MUCH different. You can find the original version online from when they did test shots, and it looks ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. They sent the footage to the studio and were pretty much immediately told to shoot what they could without the Predator, redesign the thing and fill it with a much larger actor (the guy who played the final Predator was over 7' tall). The process of firing JCVD was apparently pretty acrimonious on both ends.

As far as i know, the Predator's race see it as a rite of passage into adulthood: go down on a planet, hunt, bring trophies and return back to the home planet to be recognized by the other members of said alien race. In the spin-off movie Alien vs Predator, they even constructed a "hunting ground" where they do a similar ritual hunting down Xenomorphs (the very race of aliens in Ridley Scott's first Alien movie shot back in 1979). Great reaction and insights video.

-It’s weird. I decided to rewatch your reaction to John Wick Chapter 1 earlier where you talked about where a movie has comedic moments because of the events in the scene(Jimmy appearing at John’s house after killing Viggo’s crew and “You…uh…working again?” line) and when someone makes a comment. The first person I thought about was Arnie and the first thing I thought about was “Stick around” from this movie. If you get the chance and haven’t, check out “Commando” which has a couple more Schwarzenegger one liners. It also has Bill Duke, who played Mac here, but another person in it is David Patrick Kelly, who played Charlie in “John Wick.” -As much as I loved this movie, I wish there was a way to redo the Predator’s invisibility effect with modern effects without affecting the rest of the movie. You mentioned seeing Alien v. Predator, which did an awesome job of it. However, they used what they had in 1987 and got nominated for an Best Effects Oscar. -It’s weird watching this and realizing there are two former governors(Arnie for California and Jesse Ventura for Minnesota) and they’re also part of the WWE Hall of Fame. -Predator 2 is a solid movie with Danny Glover and set in 1997 South Central Los Angeles. -Predators has more of a feel like the first one with Robert Rodriguez as the director and Adrien Brody as the main character. An amzing scene to watch is a sword duel between one of the predators and Louis Ozawa Changchien, who plays a Yakuza. The feel of it along with the scenery is amazing. -When it comes to The Predator, it had some fun moments. -I don’t have Hulu so I haven’t Prey. The trailer looks awesome but the reaction for it from Ariana of Diegesis is something to check out. She has no idea what the movie is about and you realize that she loved at least the first Predator by her reaction the moment it hits her that this is a new Predator movie.

This is one of my favorite movies, and my best and I have discussed it a lot. We came up with a few ideas and theories that might make sense. See if you agree. 1) Why didn’t we ever see the other party of rebels? Because the Predator split his time between killing them and hunting Dutch’s team. 2) What was the Predator doing right behind Dutch before it triggered the net trap? Probably going to stab him right in the back. Another kill/trophy, and then his team would be demoralized/panicking. (The way it killed Mac shows that he’s not afraid to fight dirty.) 3) Interpreting the Predator’s line “What the hell are YOU.” Basically, at the end of the day, both he and Dutch are mass killers.
