Two little fun facts: When Sigourney Weaver heard about the project, she wanted to be part of it, but the producers initially refused, because they didn't want any big names from the sci-fi scene attached to it (for obvious reasons), but she was insistant, especially when she found out her character was going to be the "dumb blonde". When Tim Allen did his confession speech to Malthasar, he was so emotional he had to spend some time alone in his trailer. Alan Rickman just responded with "he just experienced acting".

The actors playing the Thermians in this movie really killed it. Of course octopoids imitating humans would find themselves trapped in the Uncanny Valley when trying to do it. Just imagine yourself trying to imitate an octopus... to an actual octopus. You'd have no real idea how to move like them, and it wouldn't fool them at all. The fact that Mathesar's actor was able to do all that and still effectively & believably convey an entire range of human emotions is a real tribute to his skill.

Many Star Trek fans not only consider this a ST movie but also one of the very best. I think because it has very many elements of ST from both sides (the show and the fandom), but also it doesn't alienate the fandom in any way. It's in equal parts both mocking and respectful to the show and the fandom. It basically has a perfect balance, and is legitimately a good SF romp all at the same time. The Cornetto Trilogy does a similar thing I think. Made by lovers of media who are capable of making a very decent film in the genre whilst not being afraid to add a good dose of fan service, as well as 'taking the piss' a little.🤣

This has such an amazing cast and is so funny (I’m not a big Trekkie but I adore this movie!) Alan Rickman is just sublime in this! ❤ Also fun fact/quote from Patrick Stewart that is my favourite reactions and sums up the movie: “I had originally not wanted to see [Galaxy Quest] because I heard that it was making fun of Star Trek and then Jonathan Frakes rang me up and said ‘You must not miss this movie! See it on a Saturday night in a full theatre.’ And I did and of course I found it was brilliant. Brilliant. No one laughed louder or longer in the cinema than I did, but the idea that the ship was saved and all of our heroes in that movie were saved simply by the fact that there were fans who did understand the scientific principles on which the ship worked was absolutely wonderful. And it was both funny and also touching in that it paid tribute to the dedication of these fans”

This and Seth MacFarlane's The Orville are the best parodies of Star Trek. If particular, this film captures the fandom culture and the behind-the-scenes drama between the actors. Alan Rickman's character also displays Leonard Nimoy's sentiments about being best known for Spock, as he wrote two books, one called "I Am Not Spock" and then "I Am Spock."

Great reaction! The film is not only a great parody, but also a wonderful homage to Star Trek and the also to the fans that have kept the dream alive for more than half a century so far. Given how much you enjoyed Galaxy Quest, you might also like a 90-minute documentary that was made in 2019 for the 20th anniversary of the movie called Never Surrender (on Prime). It talks with the cast, the crew, and the executives about the history of the movie and how it was made. It also talks with fans, critics and Star Trek alumni about how the film was received and the lasting legacy and cult status it has achieved. I have watched the documentary many times and enjoy it so much, I hope you will too.

In theaters, this film was hurt a lot by poor marketing: the studio didn't know what a gem they had, so they tried to position it as a fun kids comedy adventure movie, which is NOT what it is. That meant they also cut the key comedic plot point of Fred being "elevated" and Gwen's one f-bomb. It IS a good adventure movie, it's just that most of the jokes were for adults and people familiar with Star Trek fandom, not children. Which is too bad, because they did some really interesting things with this film in the theater setting. In particular, when the aspect ratio widened on Jason's first glimpse of space, the curtains in some theaters pulled back to accommodate, adding to the drama.

My understanding, is that in the theater-release version, the film's aspect ratio changes TWICE: Once, at the end of the "TV show" opening sequence, when the words, "To be continued..." flash on the screen. Then, a second time, when the doors of the Protector II open, to give Jason the info that he really is in Outer Space. (The double change in aspect ratio is a wonderful touch. Unfortunately, the DVD version I have, omits the second of these changes. Nor have I actually seen the second change occur on streaming versions in reaction videos. I don't know where it's possible to watch a version of this film with the second change in aspect ratio, as the director intended.)

14:06 There's actually an explanation for this behavior...and a whole lot more that he exhibits all throughout. See, there's a deleted scene where this guy smoked an *enormous* blunt before he went in for the second round at the convention center. So he's actually high as a kite for the whole movie...

Tony Shalhoub's character on the show was called Chen. Notice he is always squinting, he's played a fake Chinese on the show. Plus he's a pot head which is why he takes everything in stride.😊

Love this movie. Tony Shalhoub doesn't get nearly enough recognition.

To get a more family-friendly rating, some of the most explicit moments depicting Fred being high on weed for the entire film were cut.

Sigourney said it was so obvious that she said F**k that and the dubbed screw that over it….there’s a documentary about Galaxy Quest talking to cast, crew and fans and it’s really interesting. Lotta love for Alan Rickman 😢

Sam Rockwell is an excelllent actor... very versatile. He's the one that played Guy. If you get the chance, you should watch the documentary about the making of this film. One funny story is Tim Allen is a supposedly a geek about this kind of stuff. The script called for them to just go out of the shuttle. Tim was arguing they needed yo do checks first in case the planet wasn't appropriate for their types of life forms. They basically said no to doing checks. But in the very next take, Sam improvised the line, " Is there air? You don't know!". If you haven't done it yet, you should check out "JoJo Rabbit", another star studded cast.

If you can read lips, you know that the actress (I forget her name off the top of my head. Crucify me) did not say "well, screw that" at 24:19

Never Surrender is a GREAT documentary about the making of the movie. The comics also have a great story between the movie's adventure and The Journey Continues. Apparently did so well, there's a lot more GQ comics now! I thought there was only a one off "sequel"!

Sam Rockwell improvised the scream after being transported, Sigourney's (and rest of cast) reaction was real! Tech Sgt. Chen was supposed to be always high ( his indifferent outlook on everything) but they cut it out for the rating ( also cut out scene where they explain about Sigourney's character's boobs after the chompers scene).
