Just read a couple comments but there is a story about the movie that is the BEST thing about Galaxy Quest. Patrick Stewart orignally didnt want to see the film. He felt from what he had heard/seen it was going to make fun of Star Trek and the Fans that made Trek what it is. Then Stewart gets a call from his friend Johnathan Frakes. Frakes says "You HAVE to go see this film on a friday when the theatre is packed". So Stewart did. According to him no one was laughing as loud or as hard as HIMSELF, he absolutely LOVES this film. Because it does the opposite of what he had thought, that its a loving TRIBUTE to Star Trek and just as much a tribute to the FANS of Star Trek.

I loved how they portrayed Leonard Nimoy's impact on the fanbase through Spock, with Alan Rickman's character. How he became very jaded about his character, and the people that idolized him. But then, he realized, just how many people, had genuinely tried to model their life after the character he made, to be logical, to not let their emotions dictate their actions, and how many people genuinely benefited from that kind of mental discipline and structure to their lives, how Spock was literally a father figure for a lot of young people, who maybe didn't have such a role model growing up . And how Leonard eventually came back around to the impact of Spock as a positive force in the universe. And the way that played out with Quillick and Alan, it chokes me up EVERY time I see it. How the phrase that he had come to loathe, genuinely had meaning for him now. That his work wasn't a sham, that it meant something to people. Just so damn good.

There's a charm in the hokey production and acting. Once you just accept the world and get into the stories. And they cast and writing got better as they went. I'm so happy to see you do this one Mary! I LOVE Galaxy Quest. As a science fiction fan in general and a Star Trek fan in particular, I've loved this movie since it's first release. The antipathy between the captain and the rest of the cast is based on the real life relationship between William Shatner (Captain Kirk) and the rest of the Star Trek the Original Series cast. The show is a parody of both Star Trek, its cast and its fandom and conventions, but it's a parody made with love. In many ways, it's also a love letter to Star Trek and the way the themes of the fictional Galaxy Quest mirror the themes of Star Trek, giving them their due as powerful and inspiring themes. In many ways, Galaxy Quest has come to be seen as a proxy Star Trek movie in and of itself - and an excellent one at that! When Seth McFarland created The Orville (which is superb) many thought it was going to be the same thing as Galaxy Quest - a fond parody. In a way that's true, although The Orville ended up being much more serious than Galaxy Quest, but holding true to its mix of comedy combined with classic Star Trek themes. I would also recommend you watch The Orville, since you liked Galaxy Quest. And watch some Star Trek too, if you want to see what inspires film and TV makers so much!

The return to TV, with Guy becoming Security Chief, is a fun nod to _Star Trek_ history: in the mid 1970s, the show had become so unbelievably successful in syndication that a second TV series was planned, called _Star Trek Phase Two._ It was to feature nearly all of the original cast (only Leonard "Spock" Nimoy declined to return), plus three new characters. Pavel Chekhov, who had been a navigator in the original series, would have been promoted to Security Chief - a position that hadn't appeared at all before in the old _Star Trek._ As it happened, Paramount changed their minds and the series was scrapped before it aired, but the pilot episode was reworked into _Star Trek: The Motion Picture,_ while the new characters and a few episode scripts eventually found their way into _Star Trek: The Next Generation._

After watching this film, Mary, did you ever get around to watching the documentary they made about the making of it? The writer, director and actors talking all about it, and how they were all happily ready to sign-up again for either a film sequel, or a TV series of it? Until Alan couldn't accept due to being so ill, and then passing away . . . after which, none of them could face doing it without him being there with them on it . . . (Now that's someone's missing acting presence for you!) . . . Do enjoy it if you haven't yet . . .
