The part that gets me, that often gets missed is when they're in the basement and Ed shakes his head, resigned to his fate and says "I only hold you back". You can really see in his eyes what he really means, not just because he's wounded. He accepts the ultimate sacrifice to allow Shaun to escape; not just the basement, but to move on in his life with Liz.
@G1NZOU2 жыл бұрын
Pete unknowingly saved Shaun's life the night they were drunk and blasting music. You can hear police sirens when he opens the window to throw the record out, and closes the front door. If he hadn't stopped the music and shut the door Shaun and Ed would have been eaten before morning by the zombies that got drawn by the noise.

One last thing that I didn't notice on first viewing was that the zombies do still have a bit of intelligence left in them. We see this with Phil turning the music off in the car, but there are other moments that you have to look for to notice. For one, Shaun invites their roommate Pete to The Winchester when he finds him zombified in the shower and that's how zombie Pete knows where to find them. Another one is the convenience store clerk. Shaun doesn't have enough money for the shop and yells out "I owe you 15P". The zombie clerk shows up later in the movie and it has it's hand out when it sees Shaun as if asking for the money Shaun still owes him.

If I remember correctly, the car doors were locked because Phil always had the child locks on. I think they mentioned it jn the movie. Not sure if they still have child locks on cars, but back in the day, on the inner part of the door was a switch. It prevented the back doors from opening from the inside, so kids didn't open them while driving.

Simon Pegg and the character Yvonne he keeps bumping into played by Jessica Hynes keep bumping into each other, which is a joke about them being roommates from the British TV show Spaced. But when they meet the second time Yvonne says "Good to see you again" to Liz, even though the actress playing Liz was not on the TV show. This is dismissed, but the two actresses actually both were in a film called Pure 2yrs before this film.

There was also a pretty big compliment to Jessica Hynes in there. She cowrote the TV series Spaced with Simon Pegg and she and her group are consistently having a better version of the same movie than Sean. She has the same group of people played by more famous actors, she hasn't broken up with her other half, she has a better plan, she saves the day. Simon Pegg was basically saying it would have been a better movie with her in it, but she moved on to other things after Spaced and didn't have the time or inclination to follow him, Nick and Edgar into movies.

One thing that you notice in this trilogy is that at some point near the beginning of the movie they foreshadow exactly what the rest of the movie will be. In this one it is Ed telling Shaun what they're going to do after Liz dumped him. Example "We'll start out the day with a bloody Mary," and the first zombie they fight in the backyard is woman named Mary. You can see her name on her name tag.

Excellent reaction. One reference (among many) to George A Romero's 1978 zombie classic 'Dawn of the Dead' (except the name 'Shaun of the Dead' that is) is in the final sequence of the movie when Shaun and Liz are scrolling through TV shows post-zombie apocalypse where you momentarily see a comedic Total Wipeout type show where zombies are tied to bungee cords trying to get at a chunk of meat, the music you hear on that TV show is a song called 'The Gonk' which is a famous piece of incidental music from the movie soundtrack for 'Dawn of the Dead'. Also, fun fact, Simon Pegg's dissertation at university was on 'A Marxist overview of popular 1970s cinema and hegemonic discourses' where he specifically discusses 'Dawn of the Dead' and how it was a deliberate critique on consumerism.

If you wanna see more Simon Pegg "Run Fatboy Run" and "Man Up" are fun, light hearted romcoms. Also Ed didn't lock everyone in the car. The car had child locks, it was a call back to something Phillip said earlier. I only caught 2 zombie movie references. We're coming to get your Barbara is a line from the movie "Night of the Living Dead" and Shaun of the Dead is reference to "Dawn of the Dead". Both movies had the same director. Thanks again for the reaction and Happy 4th of July!

The reason the film works as well as it does is because as you brought up each aspect of a scene is played straight and seriously… the heart breaking scenes are heart breaking, the comedy scenes are hilarious, the gore is good… every aspect is top tier! And for a movie like this to work, that has to be true… there are similar movie concepts that don’t really work well because aspects are missing… the gore effects are awful, the lines are ridiculous, the acting is horrendous, etc etc… but if you get a situation like this where all those aspects are done to perfection you get a masterpiece, and it can appeal to more viewers because people will love individual aspects and there’s something here for so many people!

you’re the only person i’ve seen catch onto the fact that ed left shaun in the car to die because shaun yelled at him. if you rewatch the scene at the pub after shaun gets dumped ed foreshadows everything that’s gonna happen after that night. the guy that calls ed is the kid that works with shaun, the call he got while shaun was trying to hold the store meeting was from ed who’s his dealer. simon pegg was absolutely amazing in this. Diane survives in a tree with davids leg. The “gas station” was actually what we’d call a corner shop I think it’s what americans would call a bodega?

Convenience store is the most common term I know of for them. It’s understandable to identify them with gas stations here. Now that I think about it, I don’t know of any convenience stores around where I live that aren’t also gas stations. There were DVD special features that clarified certain details. Like, Ed was still conscious, but he is often overruled by the virus/curse; even so, he finally feels grateful to Shaun. "We're coming to get you Barbara!" references "Night of the Living Dead"when Barbara(the supposed main)is teased by her brother that "they are coming to get her" in the cemetery before the first zombie attacks them.

While _Night of the Living Dead_ (1968) definitely has a disembowelment scene, David’s death reminds me more of _Day of the Dead_ (1985), where that film’s Guy You Love to Hate meets the same fate. (And on the subject of that same movie, there’s one zombie that gets a lot of screen time, and Simon Pegg used him as the model for his own zombie-like moments.)
@jksgameshelf33782 жыл бұрын
Well, "Dawn of the Dead" had the first disembowlement scene closest to the one that David suffered, and there are SO many references to those films in SotD, starting with the very first second of the film and the music that plays under the opening, which is the exact same music that starts "Dawn of the Dead", and then Shaun works at Foree Electronics, which is a nod to actor Ken Foree from DotD, etc. And then the character Yvonne that Shaun keeps running into is actress Jessica Hynes, who was the co-creator/writer/star with Simon Pegg in the show "Spaced" which Edgar directed all the episodes of, and a lot of the dialogue between Shaun & Yvonne is a nod to that show, and a whole lot of the zombie extras were fans of "Spaced" and were hired off the fan website, and paid one pound each. Another character from the show is even a zombie outside The Winchester. Clariss, one little thing you might have missed (because you can't eat a salad and look down at your food when an Edgar Wright film is on!) is that the zombie who first broke into Shaun & Ed's house who had the tux on and was missing an arm, was the customer right behind Shaun on his first trip to the convenience store, and almost every interaction Shaun has with people on that first visit has a payoff on the second visit. Also, the one slightly heavy co-worker of Shaun's who gives him such a hard time at work was actor Rafe Spall, who grew up and thinned out later to play one of the Andy's - the detectives in "Hot Fuzz" and was in the great Christmas episode of "Black Mirror" with Jon Hamm. For those interested in the fine details, there's a great book that came out a few months back called "You've Got Red on You" about the making of SotD, and it wasn't always smooth sailing, but what a great film, start to finish. Now, on to "The World's End" to finish the Cornetto Trilogy!

Hey Claris great reaction I love your energy and knowledge! Also that Peacock top is fire!! A few things I believe the film your referencing is called Day of the Dead (1985) by George A Romero Wright is a fan in this is so what of a homage to Romero an that film He also did Night of the Living Dead (1969) made in black and white one of the first zombie flicks. Also one of the first films to feature an African American as a hero. Finally Shaun's other friend Yvonne (played by Jessica Stevenson) was in a show with Pegg and Frost and directed by Wright called Spaced 1999-2001. Spaces was co written by Pegg and Stevenson. It ran for two seasons and that's where Wright and Pegg got their big break and the popularity of that show helped Wright make this film. It's a fricking great show (on Netflix in UK) which has Wright's directing style that we have come to know. I hope you get to watch it. That's all the need stuff that I got for you. All best

I know the BBC are pretty harsh on copyright on KZbin, but one of the most interesting zombie things I've seen was a TV show called "In The Flesh". In that, they found a way to bring zombies back to normality and the show dealt with the friction caused when cured zombies went back to live with families and communities that they had harmed. It mixed a bit of British 'kitchen sink' drama with a little bit of humour and horror. It might be a headache to react to, but I'd happily recommend to anyone that they watch it as the best uses of zombies is as a metaphor, or as a way of exploring how people react to something

In addition to being an amazing comedy Shaun of the Dead is also the most realistic Zombie movie ever with the conclusion.

I loved how you were saying everyone in the movie is an idiot. And you are correct but we wouldn’t have a movie if all of the characters were too smart

Great reaction, Clariss! 👍 When this movie was in the theaters, I wonder how many times people in the audience would yell out, "Shut up, David!" You definitely should watch "The Worlds' End," because it's just not right to see only two movies of such a great trilogy.

Great reaction, Simon Pegg does do a great job, and he's even better in World's End, do you plan on reacting to that film too? I think you'd really love it and it's the most surprising of the trilogy I find, also a lot of people after watching the trilogy a few times end up liking World's End the most. I see 'Spaced' has been mentioned a few times, it's where the Cornetto trilogy started as a tv series, and interestingly Jessica Stevenson who is the actor who is leading the other group of survivor's stars alongside Simon Pegg in 'Spaced', they're the two lead actors in the series, it's also amazing how many cameos there are in these films, every single person in the other survivors group is a well known and respected top comedian/actor in the UK.

Some of the best comedians are the best actors. I totally agree that Simons commitment to his character truly brought the film to a truly epic standard. All the actors truly did their part though. What I love about British comedy is it is truly a serious business. It wouldn’t be funny otherwise.

I watched this movie when it came out. Which I was 11 years old at the time. I laughed through most of it but I remembered that David’s death was so satisfying and yet mortifying at the same time!!

I love how SHaun of the dead show how we, normal people who don't have a gun home, will comport in a zombi apocalypse if they don't die. Like, we are a family of four four people, five if you count the cat, and zero weapon at home. Like, at most, we have one showel and one poker, the court are open and everone have noodle arms. We doing like Shaun.

If you're interested, "Spaced", the series Edgar Wright made with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost before he made the Cornetto Trilogy, is available for free on KZbin!

Interesting fact: Nick Frost met Simon Pegg when they were housemates (flatmates in UK), just before Simon co-wrote and starred in 'Spaced'. They got on so well together, doing funny routines etc., that Simon suggested Nick try acting in his new tv series (he was a fast food worker at the time!). It worked so well that Nick got a career out of it! In other words, Nick is a natural, untrained talent. Oh, and the young director of 'Spaced' was one Edgar Wright!

Best reaction I've seen to a movie I've seen for ages I love the Cornetto trilogy

It's best to view this movie like watching Homer and the Simpsons mixed with dry british humor. For me, this was the funniest of the trilogy.

It just dawned on me that Shaun could have solved all his problems by taking Liz to his Mums for their dinner.

Don't know if you got it but 'We're coming to get you, Barbara!' is also a line from Romero's classic. If you haven;t, you should watch '28 Days Later' and, for another comedy horror 'The Cottage' starring the second guy in the line up behind Yvonne, Reece Sheersmith plus Andy Serkis.

The Worlds End is underrated

Note the brilliant Reece Shearsmith in a walk on ( the man behind Martin Freeman) one of the best comic actors and writers around today See League of Gentlemen, Psychoville, Inside No 9 performed and written by the equally brilliant Steve Pemberton
Please watch Multiplicity. It's my favorite comedy. Starring Micheal Keaton and it's the same director as groundhog day and Ghostbusters. Highly underrated

I whole heartedly recommend a film called The Drop. It stars Tom Hardy, James Gandolfini and Noomi Rapace. It’s an excellent crime drama/thriller with a truly fascinating main character played to perfection by Tom Hardy.

Huge thumbs up for this recommendation. Hardy's performance is so reserved yet utterly brilliant.

18:59 Ooh. Don't say a word, Shaun. Just quietly slip out. 19:08 Shaun, why are you still there? 19:11 Shaun, for god's sake, _why_ did you do that? You _knew_ he'd been bitten. You _knew_ he wasn't moving. You _knew_ there was a zombie uprising going on. Why, Shaun? Why?

If you want to see a brilliant performance by Martin Freeman, he lead in an independent film called Cargo, and yes, it's a Zombie flick too. You're welcome!
