Though he is the most-brilliant supervillain the world has known, Megamind (Will Ferrell) is the least-successful. Thwarted time and again by heroic Metro Man (Brad Pitt), Megamind is more surprised than anyone when he actually manages to defeat his longtime enemy. But without Metro Man, Megamind has no purpose in life, so he creates a new opponent, who quickly decides that it's more fun to be a bad guy than a hero.

Best thing about Metro Man is, that his passion is about music. Not because he is actually quite bad, but its the thing that nothing of his super power´s can help him with. He has to work his butt off practising like normal person.

That's what I got out of it. The big issue with that though is even after he works his ass off and actually becomes good or great at it, will he achieve something satisfying or will he lapse into depression like Megamind did because it didn't bring him the satisfaction that he was looking for? You may have missed the mid-credit scene, where the real Bernard reappears. The dehydration gun reduces things to cubes. When they get wet, they return to normal. So far as we can tell, Megamind never killed anyone. He was never evil, just playing elaborate games. Any super-intelligent person in a normal world, would tend to be bored most of the time. Roxanne got kidnapped roughly once a week, as an excuse for Metroman to come after Megamind. And she'd long since figured out she was in no danger. You can see she's bored and not stressed during the one kidnapping we see. I suspect that if Roxanne and Hal had not intervened, Megamind would have chosen Roxanne to be the next hero. And his plan might have actually worked.

Yeah, this is one (of many many reasons) this movie is so great, in my view. That they portray the "nice guy" for what he actually is, and that he ends up being the true villain of the story, I feel it highlights how truly scary someone with this type of mentality can be, especially toward the people their entitled expectations are focused. The contrast between Roxanne's calm demeanor during her kidnapping at the beginning (making light of his various plots and contraptions, asking about her Frequent Kidnapping rewards card) and her genuine fear when Hal captures her conveys the true danger she faces from Hal. And the fact that this was all happening before the concept of incels hit the mainstream just amazes me. It's an aspect of the movie that keeps it relevant into today.

That whole presentation scene is, I don't have appropriate words. It's the closest thing I've ever seen to the perfect dramatic entrance. Think about it. Set the humor aside for a moment, give into the drama a little and look at it. First, let's talk about the preceding scenes. The threat is unstoppable. The only power capable of matching it has benched itself, but it points toward another hope. Who refuses it. And walks away. We then enter the darkest hour. The threat has taken the best and most hopeful character in the entire story, and now, even they begin to feel despair. And abandonment. But just before, we got one last promise of hope. So for the whole scene, on top of the despair, on top of the hopelessness, we feel a constantly building sense of frustration! And anticipation. We were right to. Thunder booms, and the unstoppable threat turns to find that, without him even noticing (!), the SKY has been BLOTTED OUT! And this unstoppable, invincible, fallen angel of wrath, floats before a dark storm of lightning and thunder that seemingly fills the whole world. And looks small. Then a voice, filling the air from every direction at once like an enraged GOD! "YOU DARE TO CHALLENGE MEGAMIND!" "this town isn't big enough for two supervillains." And as the visage of the Megamind emerges from the storm, to personally belittle and rain humiliation upon this upstart ant who has managed to offend him, we cut to her. I want to really emphasize this moment. This whole movie, people have looked upon this man with scorn. The only thing he has needed to do to sour the mood, to spread fear and panic, to bring children to tears, is appear. And now, he has appeared again. Grander and greater then ever before. And we turn to look upon the person he might have hurt worst of all. And what do we see? We see hope. We see hope! THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is presentation. I could say more, but I'm gonna cut it here. I hope I got my point across.

There's a visual cue that most people miss because it's so subtle: ~ In the beginning, Roxanne is wearing a red dress - red being the 'opposite' color from blue (Megamind's color) because she absolutely dislikes him. ~ During the flight with Hal and dinner with 'Bernard', she's wearing purple - a mixture of red and blue. She likes 'him' while still disliking him. ~ Investigating Metro Man's lair and kidnapped by Hal, she's wearing white - completely neutral as she reevaluates everything she thought she knew. ~ At the unveiling of the rebuilt museum, she's wearing blue - she now supports Megamind and connects with him in ways she never connected with Metro Man. Another sneaky visual cue are the character's eyes: Megamind's eyes are green; Metro Man's and the Warden's eyes are blue; Minion's and Bernard's eyes are brown. If you pay attention, you can see: ~ When 'Megamind' chastises the prison guards, his eyes are blue because it's actually the Warden. ~ When the 'Warden' casually strolls out of prison, his eyes are green because it's actually Megamind. ~ When 'Bernard' dates Roxanne, his eyes are green because it's actually Megamind. ~ When the 'Warden' releases Megamind from prison, his eyes are brown because it's actually Minion. ~ When 'Metro Man' battles Tighten, his eyes are green because it's actually Megamind. (The one goof in this regard is when 'Megamind' confronts Tighten - his eyes are green throughout even though it's actually Minion in disguise. I suspect that this may have been a deliberate exception so as to not give away the deception.) Also, the school segment - particularly when he dehydrates and rehydrates Minion - sets up the Chekoviest Chekov's Gun ever Chekoved. It's revisited in the break-up scene when the rain rehydrates all the garbage Megamind had dehydrated, including a stray cat that recovers instantly upon rehydration. Because it's a crucial aspect of Megamind both surviving the fall and getting the drop on Hal/Tighten, it's used frequently throughout the story (including Bernard and Carlos, Roxanne's doorman) - "hiding in plain sight". One aspect of the De-Gun I used to ponder was why Megamind never used the dehydration function on Hal/Tighten, but the answer is stealthily hidden in the newspapers during the opening sequence - that Metro Man's powers make him immune to gun. As Hal's powers came from Metro Man, Megamind assumed that Tighten would have the same immunity to the gun (as with the supposed weakness to copper).

Actually when "Megamind " talked to guards his eyes were still green despite being the Warden the same Minion kept the green eyes colors when he turned into Megamind. I weirdly like how metroman chose to do music which he isn’t good at, it’s probably used as a joke but I like to think since he was basically handed everything and could do so much with his powers easily he wanted to do something that he struggles at so for once he has something he has to work for. I also like how they were basically enemies throughout their whole life but you could tell it was all a show and they cared for each other in a way. They could’ve easily made metroman a complete douche and the bad guy throughout the whole movie but then they actually made people route for him as well by the end.

Personally I like to think that Metroman wanted to be friends with Megamind even back when they were kids, but true to his arc he felt forced to uphold his reputation as the good kid, and so didn't feel like he could approach and get to know the bad boy. Cause while he does seem really smug as a kid, it is also only briefly shown to us with not much detail and all from Megamind's point of view, we see him as Megamind saw him as a quick and easy way to get the viewers on board with the villain protagonist.

@@islandork It's a behaviour typified as "nice guy syndrome" that has become particularly pervasive within the last few decades due to the advent of fourth wave feminist theories and single mothers. Basically by raising boys without a strong male role model, the destruction of male safe spaces and the conjecture that is men behaved more like women than everything would be better. Unfortunately, this fails to address the massive amount of priviledge that women enjoy in western society (which is why you don't see these issues in traditional Muslim societies), that are not afforded men so that when taking their single mom and feminist teachers word for it on how to behave, they find that their needs are completely not met. Worse they have to strong male role models or male spaces to tell them otherwise and most watch on in growing frustration as their more traditional conservative counterparts (such as MegaMind and MetroMan) are achieving all that they are lacking they must make one of several choices: 1) double down on what feminism has taught them is acceptable pathos, which we see Hal do initially resulting in increasingly cringe behaviour. 2) when that fails, the frustration causes them to lash out, which Hal also does (in modern parlance we see this typified in school shooters) 3) ditch the dogma and adopt the habits and behaviours of their more successful conservative brethren. This we never see Hal get to, but it's typified by the neo-male-feminists that tun into and eventually reform themselves from a good strong male role model, or by obtaining competent professional psychiatric assistance such a Jordan Peterson. Hope this helps you on your journey.

@@rsrt6910 - Um, no. Hal doesn't do what "feminism has taught." "Feminism" just says that women are people, and society should respect women's choices and consent...and Hal definitely didn't respect Roxanne's choices or consent. He did the opposite: pursuing her despite her obvious lack of interest, hitting on her just after the death of someone he thought was her boyfriend, and expecting her to fall into his arms just because he became a muscleman. None of that is remotely "feminist." Megamind was also far from a "conservative traditional counterpart," being at heart an intellectual dweeb--just with a sense of dramatic flair. Metro Man is the only one who fits that "traditional conservative" model of masculinity...and he's desperately unhappy, because (surprise) following a model that's inherently unrealistic and limited will eventually make you unhappy.

What so many studios don't understand, moreso now than in the 80s for example, is that kids love a story that is for adults. Not a super-complicated story for adults, nothing with complicated motivations or ethical quandaries but one with simple-enough motivations that doesn't treat it's audience like children. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, ET, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters. More recently, I bet kids are loving Top Gun 2 right now if they are lucky enough to get to see it.... And it goes the other way too. If you understand the above, a movie can be made for children that appeals to adults for exactly the same reasoning. And I think this is one of the best examples of one that goes that way. It is animated, and colourful and over-the-top. It starts from a position of 'for-kids', but is definitely also 'for-adults'.

one of the things i love about this movie is that it touches on nice-guy syndrome and consent and toxic masculinity without preaching about it or treating men in general the problem of these things like modern tv does. its just part of the characters and the story as a whole, it has nuance and doesnt feel like forced plot points solely used to preach about it by hitting you over the head with it and treating the viewer as if they're too stupid to know its wrong. and now some of my movie recommendations: no one lives (2012) a group of people rob a couple who are moving and then shit goes wrong upgrade (2018) in the near future, technology controls almost everything and a guy who is a self labeled technophobe needs tech to get revenge. repo men (2010) in the future artificial organs can be bought on credit and a guy who cant pay for his heart needs to go on the run before it gets repossessed. they're not kid friendly films like megamind, but they're all underrated gems that any movie lover should watch.

I found Megamind so precinct about wrestling with societal expectations & toxic masculinity but not with a Jock archetype, you're not entitled to anyone else so I feel like when people see how quickly Hal flips to being a villain when he's turned down: he had that in him from the beginning, he never actually listened to her. So funnily enough I think this is an important film & an opportunity to broach the topic of consent without making people uncomfortable

@@AZDfox Hal didn't show any signs of dizziness, blurred vision, headaches, did not slur his speech or show signs of muscle weakness. Most telling, Hal didn't do anything nor was it implicated that he was "juicing" unless you count that one time "infusion" he mistakenly received from Megamind's infusion gun, but I saw that more as an extension of CRISPR technology more than possible drug overdose.

Incredibly handsome criminal genius and master of all villainy. Damn right! One of my favorite animated characters and it has a lot to do with Will Ferrel's great voice over work. He is also great as the villain Lord Business in the Lego Movie. Hey Clariss I was just curious, have you ever done or wanted to do any voice over acting, you have a nice voice and I bet you would be great at it. With the right character of course.

One neat little detail: in the beginning of the film, Roxanne is wearing red. As she gets to know Megamind/Bernard, her clothing color changes to purple, and by the end of the film, she's wearing blue, Megamind's color. I didn't catch that until about the tenth time I watched it.

One little thing to look out for when anyone uses the disguise watch: their eyes. Megamind, Minion, and the warden all have different eye color. You knew it wasn't the warden or Megamind because Minion's eyes are a different color from either of them. It's a great device, but without color contact lenses it only works until you get up close. And notice how Roxanne dresses throughout the movie. She wears three dresses. Red, for her friendship with Metroman. Purple, for her growing relationship with "Bernard". And finally blue, for her now established relationship with Megamind. I love subtle things that have deeper meaning that you might not see the first time around. And the soundtrack was amazing. Licensed music or what they made for the movie, it all hit just right.

I agree with you that there seems to be a real dearth of just enjoying movies, instead of taking them deadly seriously. Not to mention the 'dark, gritty' storytelling, or lack thereof. Watching your enjoyment of this often-watched classic was like seeing it for the first time again. Thank you for that! But seriously, the subtitler on your copy needs to be slapped up alongside the head for 'Tighten'. Seriously? They even spell it out in Roxanne's notes all over her apartment and his laser vision. Titan.

An incredible detail that almost no one knows about. We know that Metro Man used super speed and went to Megamind's lair for a moment. In the beginning of the movie Megamind is broadcasting to everyone and if you slow down the movie, Metro Man actually appears behind Megamind for a single frame. It's great attention to detail.

Hal Stewart's name is a combination of of the names of two Green Lanterns, John Stewart and Hal Jordan. Space Dad was based on Marlon Brandon in the 1970s Superman movie when he played Superman's actual father. Subtitles were wrong when Megamind told Hal his superhero name - it was supposed to be "Titan" the whole joke was that dumbass Hal thought it was "Tighten" which should only be revealed when he writes his name using his heat vision.

Always reminds me of this one Batman Animated series episode where Joker thinks batman is dead so he finds no joy in committing crimes anymore he even has a funeral for batman at a factory lol while also attempting to kill the guy he thought killed batman. If you remember right he learned to dehydrate and reanimate living objects at will when he was a little kid. So when he used the guy on each of them they are simply dehydrated until he puts them back in water. The warden he just tricked into letting him out with a watch that changed there outer appearance he never dehydrated him. And the nerd he keep dehydrated the whole time. If I remember right there is an after credit scene where Mega minds Laundry is getting done and it rehydrated the guy in the wash.

one thing about metroman is that, at the ending celebration, he was there, showing that he actually was keeping vigilance in the background. though he doesn't want to be a hero, he still have that feeling of responsibilty. meaning that the reason he let megamind win at the start was because he knew megamind was never evil. the city will be okay with metroman not being around.

The Disguise Watch and De-Gun are two different gadgets. The watch just scans a person and creates a projection disguise copy of them on the wearer. The De-Gun actually has a bunch of settings if you look at it (Dehydrate, Destroy, Demoralize, Debilitate, etc.). Megamind uses the non-lethal/non-destructive Dehydrate setting to turn things into compact cubes that can be hidden (like he hides cube!Bernard in his coat pocket after zapping him in the museum, and in the credits we see that Bernard is accidentally rehydrated when his cube is put in the washer).
