It's actually directed by Henry Selick. Tim Burton just wrote the story. Still, this is such a masterpiece! The stop motion, especially for the time is phenomenal, Jack's such a compelling complex protagonist, the culture clash of these different holiday is fun to see, and the songs are amazing, especially "This Is Halloween" and "Oogie Boogie's song."

Don't apologize for being quiet during the songs, especially during "Sally's Song". I could tell you were feeling something for Sally. This movie has been a cult classic for years and is still going strong, especially with the endless amount of merchandise. For many years, there has been talks of a sequel to this but Tim Burton says that he will only make it if it can be as good as the original. I personally don't see any reason for a sequel but I figured that a decent idea would to have the rest of the holidays join in because the spirit of celebrating holidays has been losing interest and their worlds will perish when the holidays are completely forgotten unless something is done about it.

Fun fact: this film was 10yrs in the making from a poem by Burton in 82' then a drawing on a napkin. The idea of making it into a tv special or short film and finally into a movie. Disney decided to make it through Touchstone because it was to scary for little kids.

This film was without a doubt an absolute classic and Masterpiece in Stop-Motion and in pop-culture from the voice acting, the animation and the music of Danny Elfman (who also does the singing voice of Jack Skellington and the voice of Barrel). Now while yes, Tim Burton's name is in the title of the film as he did created the characters and the original poem the film was based on, along with producing the film, the film is actually directed by Henry Selick (who deserves more Credit besides Tim Burton) who would later direct _James and the Giant Peach, Coraline_ and _Wendell & Wild._ The funny thing is _James and the Giant Peach_ was the first Stop-Motion film I saw not _Nightmare Before Christmas_ and because of this, I didn't realize that the Pirate Captain in _James and the Giant Peach_ was Jack Skellington up until I watched the film again years later for the second time, after watching _Nightmare Before Christmas_ officially for the first time.

Okay so here some interesting facts about the nightmare before Christmas First this movie was originally not acknowledged by Disney due to them thinking it be too scary so they released it under tombstone pictures and it wasn't until millennials were buying anything nightmare before Christmas at any store that Disney finally acknowledged it in the late to mid 2000's as a Disney film. Second oogie boogie was originally supposed to be a Dr finklestein under the sack until Tim Burton accidentally knocked a hole in one of the sets and they changed it to oogie being a bag of bugs. Three dur to it being claymation it took 3 to 5 years to film what the movie was plus two deleted scenes one were lock shock and barrel are watching oogie roll the dice to drop Santa and Sally The second was instead of a pumpkin the vampire were playing hockey with they played it with Tim Burton head. Finally this story original start as a poem that Tim Burton wrote while sitting at his desk while being an animator for Disney back in the 1980's

Fun reaction! I particularly liked the look on your face during Oogie's demise. 😄 From what I've read, Tim Burton's name is above the title because he came up with the idea for The Nightmare Before Christmas and invented all the characters besides Santa. He got Henry Selick to actually direct it for him. I'd be curious to see you react to another movie Selick directed called Coraline. Also - given your description at the end of what you liked about the world of this movie and its characters - you'd probably enjoy the animation mini-series Over The Garden Wall. If you did reactions to that, I'd definitely watch!

Tim Burton wrote The Nightmare Before Christmas as a poem during the 80's inbetween doing animation for The Fox and the Hound (he animated Vixey at a distance as he had trouble drawing the classical Disney eyes), as well as doing concept art for The Black Cauldron, and his debut as a live action director when he made Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and Batman. The idea for the poem was inspired by his childhood when he saw the local mall going from Halloween season to Christmas season (as in southern California, the warmer climate doesn't give you seasons like northern parts of the world where you see the leaves change color and fall, snowing, etc.) and him watching the Christmas specials during the holidays such as the Chuck Jones adaptation of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Rankin-Bass' Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The poem was inspired by, slightly parodying and referenced Clement C. Moore's Twas the Night before Christmas, as well as part of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer song. The only characters mentioned in the poem are Jack Skelington, Zero, Santa and Lock, Shock and Barrel (though not mentioned by name, as he didn't thought them up until he did the movie), the others were added to the movie for more drama, characarisation and to give soul to the movie (such as Sally's emoitions giving heart to the story). Since Santa wasn't sent to Oogie-Boogie in the poem, when Jack was shot down, Santa came to the cemetary where he crashed and while applauding his intent, he told Jack that trying take over Christmas wasn't a good idea and got his hat back before going on to set things right. Then Jack return to Halloween Land and feels depressed until Santa comes and like in the movie, he brings snow to the place. After having done Batman, TIm Burton went to Disney wanting to do the movie, after attempting to get the poem either made into a book or a half.hour Christmas Special in the same feel as the Rankin-Bass movies. As he was going to do Batman Returns and Ed Wood, Burton was available to direct so he turned to his friend Henry Selick, who he met at CalArts. While waiting for the story to come together, Tim started production by talking with Danny Elfman for making the songs, he bascially told him what the scene was going to be about and after the meeting, Elfman quickly went to work on the song for the scene they talked about. After finishing the song, he called Tim to show him what he has done, got his approval and then describes the next scene. That went on for all ten songs in the movie and those went first into production while the script was coming together (Michael McDowell started writing it but got sick so Caroline Thompson jumped in and finished it, with the storyboards was done by Joe Ranft, who later became a storyboard artist/story man at Pixar, up until his death in 2005, when he co-directed Cars with John Lasseter). What's This was the first scene to be animated.

🎶 "Just because I cannot see it, doesn't mean I can't believe it!" 🎶 Merry Christmas! ✝️ 🙏 🎄 🎁 Fun Fact: The first fully animated Disney film to not be traditionally animated. Inspiration Origin Fact: Tim Burton has said the original poem was inspired after seeing the Halloween merchandise display in a store being taken down and replaced by a Christmas display. The juxtaposition of ghouls and goblins with Santa and his reindeer sparked his imagination. Music Enthusiast Fact: In Oogie Boogie's (Ken Page) Song, there was a story boarded sequence where bugs came out of Oogie's eye and danced on his arm before he belches them off. It was removed from the film because it was considered difficult to make miniature armatures for all the bugs. Another scrapped scene involved his shadow dancing on a rotating orange background and was traditionally animated but ended up being cut for timing. Despite this, the lyrics during these scenes were included in the film's soundtrack. Math Enthusiast Fact: A crossed-out calculation on Jack's (Chris Sarandon) blackboard seems to equate 3 times the square of pi multiplied by 12 to Christmas Day (a Santa hat). The true numerical answer is approximately 355.31. If the decimal portion is dropped, this then equates to December 21st, the 355th day of the year--hence the crossed-out equation. December 21st however is the first day of winter in the northern hemisphere (winter solstice). It is also the birthday of Jeffrey Katzenberg, the film's executive producer and most often credited for turning Walt Disney Studios and its animation division around after joining in 1984.

So apparently Elfman was doing quite well in his band for a while. He had a Jack moment according to him and that is how he managed to come up with Jacks song later on. Also apparently there were ALOT of unsung women involved in the creation of this film that they did come to acknowledge eventually. (I believe the movies that shaped us or something like that has a lot of info on this film. Is on the Netflix)

When I was a Kid up until 2002/2003 I didn't know _The Nightmare Before Christmas_ was a Disney movie cause it came out through Touchstone Pictures, and the funny coincidence is I didn't know Touchstone was a subsidiary/mature content label by Disney (even I also didn’t know _Who Framed Roger Rabbit_ was also Disney) and surprisingly when I saw Jack Skellington in a commercial for _Kingdom Hearts_ I said _"WAIT! Nightmare Before Christmas is Disney?!?"_ Speaking of _Kingdom Hearts,_ it's worth noting that Halloween Town is one of the few Disney worlds in which it's story in both _Kingdom Hearts_ and _Kingdom Hearts II_ isn't a retelling of the movie and follows an original story unrelated to the movie (despite borrowing elements of the film) similar to the Pixar Worlds (based on Toy Story and Monster's Inc.) and San Fransokyo (Big Hero 6) in _Kingdom Hearts III_ along with the Beauty and the Beast and Tron Worlds in _Kingdom Hearts II_ all having original storylines that aren’t a retelling of the movie.

When it first came to Blu-Ray back in the day, I got it immediately and it as a great making out of video as an extra. If you get a chance to own a physical copy of the movie, I recommend it. Most copies I see come with: the making of, a video on when they started Jack takes over the Haunted Mansion for Christmas at the parks, as well as Tim Burtons first short Vincent as well as the original Frankenweenie than Burton made.

Clariss I know that you usually reacts to movies normally. But I have suggestions for you. There is an Aca Pella Group named Voiceplay. One of their singers has his own channel on KZbin. Singer's name is Geoff Castellucci. Geoff normally sings Bass without Voiceplay. Geoff has vocal range of 4 to 5 Octaves with subharmonics (deep low Bass). Reason that I have made suggestion is Geoff did two songs from this movie: (Oogie Boogie Man) with Voiceplay and Jack's Lament (his channel). Note that Geoff with other members of Voiceplay has worked at Disney World in Orlando.

There is this ongoing debate that fans question themselves is _Nightmare Before Christmas_ is a Halloween movie, a Christmas movie, or both? For me, I considered this as both a Halloween and Christmas movie surprisingly enough. Yes, the majority including Tim Burton, Danny Elfman and Henry Selick agreed that it's a Halloween movie and they're not wrong with that, cause I see a lot of Halloween Merchandise for this film especially during the Halloween season, plus the songs and Jack wanting to create his own "Christmas" felt very Anti-Christmas and the movie premiered in October of 1993 just 30 years ago. But surprisingly, I also see a lot of Christmas Merchandise for this movie (e.g. Ornaments, Inflatables, wrapping paper, plushies, shirts, etc..) during the Christmas season along with the fact the channel Freeform play this movie during the Halloween and Christmas season respectively. 🎃🎄

Stop motion animation films such as this one just aren't done anymore; they are very time consuming, labor intensive, and tedious to film. One minute of film is comprised of hundreds if not thousands of shots. Jack was able to express so many emotions because over a hundred heads were made to accommodate them. They would switch them out as the scene required. Danny Elfman didn't only just write the music, he sang all of Jack's parts. There was another actor hired to voice his lines, but their voices are similar enough you can't really tell. All the physical sets were built by hand at 1/12 the scale, I believe. The story and style was all Burton, but Henry Selick directed it. He had a talent for stop motion, as he also directed James and the Giant Peach.

A classic film for this time of the year. Danny Elfman and Chris Sarandon did a great job as Jack's singing and speaking voice. Chris continues to play Jack to this day in various Disney media, going so far as to say that he'd "crawl all around the world" (or something like that) if it meant he got to play Jack again. around I can't blame him, he sounds like he's having a great time when he does so. The movie has great animation, catchy songs, and a decent message of "You might not get what you want, but you might find what you need through it." Though Nostalgia Critic has officially ruined that beginning scene of the climax. Cause now when I hear Jack go "Hello, Oogie!" all I can hear after is Oogie going, "HOW THE HELL'D YOU DO THAT!?"

@@Bakuru well, he wrote the poem. Caroline Thompson wrote the screenplay.

Hi Clariss, I have to draw a little bit of attention to your editing, if I may. Idk if you do your own, or if you have people, but I’ve noticed in a few of your videos some jarring cuts. Just in this video, you’ve started a sentence, and the remainder of the sentence is just cut out, and then we go to less than 1 second of footage, and then there’s *another* cut, which is another problem in itself. I’m sure that you’re trying to edit the video in a way that’s copyright safe, which I get. However if you include footage of you expressing a thought, you really should put the entire thought in the video, and you can just hide the footage for a few seconds to avoid showing too much. This is what a lot of people do. In regards to the cuts that can be less than a second, or less than two seconds long, what’s the point of showing that? If that particular footage is so short, I’m confused what it adds. When these things I’ve mentioned are together in the video, the editing is distracting from the reaction itself. I promise I’m not trying to come off as condescending, I just want your content to be as enjoyable as possible.
