I like that the lyrics in the opening song 🎶Life's no fun without a good scare / That's our job, but we're not mean / In our town of Halloween🎶tells us that Jack isn't being malicious about taking over Christmas. He's in a rut and looking for something new but he (and the other Halloween folks) aren't evil, they're just spooky!

A lot of people watching this movie for the first time these days think it was CGI. It wasn't, it was stop-motion animation. And for me, that's part of what makes this movie so wonderful. It also had great vocal talent, and of course the always amazing Danny Elfman writing and singing the songs. Danny is best known as a film score composer these days, but he used to be the frontman for a great band called Oingo Boingo. For another fun holiday-themed movie that's a bit different from the usual ones, I recommend the animated film "Rise of the Guardians". The one with Jack Frost, not the similarly-named movie with owls.

Yes!! One of my favorite Tim Burton movies as a kid, even though he didn't direct the film. Nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to JURASSIC PARK. It made $100 million dollars against a $24 million dollar budget.

Although, while it seemed that Oogie Boogie was gonna drop Santa and Sally into a pit of lava, it is actually his snake and spider stew that Lock, Shock and Barrel refers to in Kidnap the Sandy Claws. In a deleted verse of Oogie Boogie's song Oogie said that his plan was to add Santa as a spice for his snake and spider stew (which explain those blades attached to the 8 ball stirring the stew). If the verse wasn't cut (due to the storyboard had three bugs get out of Oogie's eye to do the can-can and then suck in them again, it was too diffcult to make such teeny tiny armiture for those bugs, though they could had the verse left in the movie and had something else happen) it would have been more clear what was actually going on.

And finally, everything worked out just fine Christmas was saved, though there wasn't much time But after that night, things were never the same Each holiday now knew the other one's name And though that one Christmas, things got out of hand I'm still rather fond of that skeleton man So, many years later, I thought I'd drop in And there was old Jack, still looking quite thin With four or five skeleton children at hand Playing strange little tunes in their xylophone band And I asked old Jack, "Do you remember the night When the sky was so dark and the moon shone so bright? When a million small children pretending to sleep Nearly didn't have Christmas at all, so to speak? And would, if you could, turn that mighty clock back To that long, fateful night, now, think carefully, Jack Would you do the whole thing all over again Knowing what you know now, knowing what you knew then?" And he smiled, like the old Pumpkin King that I knew Then turned and asked softly to me, "Wouldn't you?" - Danny Elfman's proposed ending for the story.

Inspiration Origin Fact: Tim Burton has said the original poem was inspired after seeing the Halloween merchandise display in a store being taken down and replaced by a Christmas display. The juxtaposition of ghouls and goblins with Santa and his reindeer sparked his imagination. Music Enthusiast Fact: In Oogie Boogie's (Ken Page) Song, there was a story boarded sequence where bugs came out of Oogie's eye and danced on his arm before he belches them off. It was removed from the film because it was considered difficult to make miniature armatures for all the bugs. Another scrapped scene involved his shadow dancing on a rotating orange background and was traditionally animated but ended up being cut for timing. Despite this, the lyrics during these scenes were included in the film's soundtrack. Math Enthusiast Fact: A crossed-out calculation on Jack's (Chris Sarandon) blackboard seems to equate 3 times the square of pi multiplied by 12 to Christmas Day (a Santa hat). The true numerical answer is approximately 355.31. If the decimal portion is dropped, this then equates to December 21st, the 355th day of the year--hence the crossed-out equation. December 21st however is the first day of winter in the northern hemisphere (winter solstice). It is also the birthday of Jeffrey Katzenberg, the film's executive producer and most often credited for turning Walt Disney Studios and its animation division around after joining in 1984.
