Corridor Crew not to long ago tested mud against the best infrared vision available today, and it works surprisingly well. This was the first movie to feature a hand-held minigun. What you don‘t see is the car batteries it needs to operate. Also they had to use a quarter of the original rotation speed. With real ammo instead of blanks it wouldn‘t be controllable hand-held at all. In initial tests Jean Claude Van Damme played the Predator, when the suit still looked quite a bit different. He dropped out, because the part wasn‘t big enough. Kevin Peter Hall took over, who has a much more imposing stature. He can be seen in the end as the pilot of the chopper. The guy with the bad jokes is played by Shane Black, who wrote Lethal Weapon. Producer Joel Silver wanted to have him on set as an on-hand script doctor. Black later became a director, e.g. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Nice Guys, Iron Man 3, and one of the Predator sequels. This is one of two movies with the same two future governors in the cast. Arnold Schwarzenegger for California and Jesse Ventura for Minnesota. The other movie is The Running Man.

Probably already mentioned, but the Predator monster in this movie proved to be pretty difficult to design. At an early stage Jean Claude van Damme (yes - him!) was hired to run around in a goofy orange foam suit for the camouflage scenes, (and a pretty poor creature suit). It just didn't work. Legend has it that Stan Winston later happened to be seated next to James Cameron on a flight, and asked him for advice. Cameron sketched the "crab/lobster face with dreadlocks" design for Winston, which then became the iconic design for the "ugly motherf*cker". Bonus trivia: the Predator was played by Kevin Peter Hall, who John McTiernan gave the role of the helicopter pilot in the end, so that he could appear in the film without suit/make-up.

One very subtle detail from this movie that I really love is during the scene where Anna is explaining about how the Jungle Hunter had been stalking the region for years during the hottest months; Dutch (Arnold)'s face is out of focus and looking away while she is talking, which makes the shine from the sweat more visible and when she says that its Spanish name means "the demon that makes trophies of men", he looks towards the camera and the shine of the sweat looks like the shape of a skull overlayed on his face. It then of course slowly shifts focus onto him, symbolizing that he is the trophy.

A lot of, maybe most, KZbin reactors think the blood in Predator somehow relates to the decision making process of the the Predator, and it leaves Anna alive because she has blood on her pants. This is not the case. She discovers the blood but the others can’t know about it yet so rather than having green on her hands she removes it with a quick wipe. If the others see it on her pants it doesn’t imply she purposely touched the stuff or that she is even aware she has green stuff on her. The Predator doesn’t attack her, because she’s not much of a sporting kill if she’s unarmed. He has a moral hunter’s ethic, which is completely established in ‘Predator 2’ which is to me, a great watch but also, very over the top, John Woo-ish kind of 80s violence. It’s ridiculous but pretty sweet. I think you’d like it judging by your reaction to this first one. The number one thing people don’t get in the first Predator film is that when Dutch gets shot at by the Predator, he actually gets hit in the gun. That’s why he survives that shot. He got lucky. Thanks for making videos eh.

'I think it would have been better if we hadn't seen the spaceship at the beginning.' While on one level I do agree with you, I also know the spaceship was shown in order to inform the audience there would be a sci-fi element. Imagine you go to see this action movie, knowing nothing about it, and half way through the Predator is firing lazer blasts and turning invisible. If you're going to do something like that then you have to set it up, else risk your audience scoffing and saying, 'As if.' For the record that is the same reason they showed the spaceship at the start of The Thing.

Mythbusters tested if mud can hide you from heat sensors and what they found out is that yes it can hide you but only for a few seconds. Your body temperature will quickly increase the temperature of the mud and you will be detected. Dutch using mud for as long as he did is movie magic, however, the initial time when he came out from the water covered in mud might have worked because the Predator was there within seconds and quickly ran off. But, that was the only moment that it COULD have worked.

Regarding your doubts about the effectiveness of the mud... some military expert KZbinrs were also dubious about this and they tested it out. They had one of their team covered in clay-like mud and had him go hide in a jungle environment. With no knowledge of where he was, the "seeking" team, equipped with thermal sensitive equipment couldn't see him, even when looking directly at him. They were shocked at the mud's effectiveness as a good insulator. The same reason ceramic tiles are used to line a kiln. Great reaction!

Great Reaction like always, this movie brings me back to my childhood i remember watching this movie when it came out and its pure action cinema at its most efficient and charmingly unpretentious, Predator remains a lean masterpiece over three decades. There are some fun facts about it, Shane Black was cast for his script expertise, not his acting chops, Shane Black, who plays Hawkins, had previously written the screenplay for Lethal Weapon; he was covertly cast in the film so that he would be available to make on-the-fly and uncredited script changes while on set. Which makes it even more befitting that Black wrote and directed The Predator, the latest installment in the series. This was professional wrestler Jesse Ventura’s first movie. The GE M134 Minigun wielded by Ventura’s character didn’t shoot live rounds, but for safety reasons, the cast and crew were required to stand at least 50 feet away when it was fired. Sonny Landham who played Billy, the team’s expert tracker was known to have such a short fuse that the studio hired a bodyguard to protect people from him. This bodyguard followed Landham everywhere he went to make sure he didn’t get into any trouble on the set. On this, McTiernan said: “We had this 6’8″ tall giant who had to follow Sonny around 24 hours a day the entire time he worked on the movie and make sure that he never misbehaved.” The Predator’s heat vision isn’t actually heat vision, the filmmakers attempted to use actual heat vision for the Predator, but the specific camera proved impractical for the on-location shoot. Instead, normal footage was made into a negative image in post-production and exaggerated “heat vision” colors were added to create the effect. Originally used an orange substance for the creature’s blood, figuring they would spiff it up with special effects in post-production. But the orange goop looked so bad on camera, they decided they had to make a change. They wound up using the luminescent liquid from the inside of glow sticks, which they bought over the counter. Jean-Claude Van Damme was the original guy in the predator suit. The “Muscles from Brussels” was reportedly fired from the movie because he complained too much about how uncomfortable the suit was, he was replaced by Kevin Peter Hall. The original design for the predator was scrapped in the middle of production, the original suit resembled a lanky, bug-eyed insect, but McTiernan didn't think it was scary enough. He halted production on the entire movie so it could be redesigned. Arnold Schwarzenegger personally tapped effects wizard Stan Winston to revamp the Predator design. The break in production was a blessing in disguise. The stop in production to redesign the Predator allowed the filmmakers to edit an hour of the movie together to show to the studio. They liked it so much that they gave the production more money to create bigger action sequences in the last third of the movie once filming picked back up again. Optimus Prime and the predator have the same voice. Peter Cullen, who is uncredited in Predator, provided the voice for both. Keep up the good work!

Try to remember that when this movie was fresh to the screen, the entire idea that a 7 foot humanoid Warrior species using a " camo " of ambient light distortion, complete with an atomically charged pulse cannon, yet still nimble to traverse the diciest of this earths rainforest canopies WHILE skinning their corpses and taking spit-shined skulls as " trophies " WAS NOT crossing the mind of anyone, anywhere! 31:25 "The blasters don't seem as powerful as I thought they would." Hmmm. We see it used several times: 1. A single blaster shot exploded Jesse Ventura's hest out like a hand grenade blew up in his rib cage. 2. A single blaster shot exploded Bill Duke's head like a watermelon. 3. A single blaster shot shattered Arnold's assault rifle like it was made of peanut brittle. 4. Several scenes where blaster shots shoot limbs off trees or even chop down a tree. Now, compare that to the blasters used by Storm Troopers, or even Han Solo. They don't blow anything up, ever.

Agreed about not seeing the spaceship at the beginning it keeps the mystery, same goes for the spaceship at the beginning of "The Thing". Would've been great not to have any inkling> The predators vision wasn't necessarily heat, it was a frequency, infra red was assumed, so most nit picks about the mud was a bit muddied so to speak🙃

A good order to watch Predator movies: 1. This one. 2. Predator 2 (1990) - a fairly "mid" movie but it's a good setup for Prey which is a better movie. 3. Prey 4 Make sure you have seen as many Alien movies as you want to watch but at least the first 2 are recommended. 5. Alien vs. Predator - mediocre but has some cool stuff. 6. Alien vs. Predator 2 - ditto 7. Any other predator movies in release order. None of them are very good but if you got this far, might as well stay on for the whole ride.

Fun fact, four special forces operators recreated the Mud vs Inferred scene from Predator. Not only did it work, they brought in engineers to do a second test to make it more difficult. It worked again. The reason it worked is due to thermodynamics. Not only will the mud mask your body's heat signature the surrounding trees, grass, and rocks will radiate more heat than you do once you're covered in mud.

Super reaction. And you're right, the mud has some questionable effectiveness. But, it's a movie. Thanks.

The space ship at the beginning was to create intrigue, without it you're just watching a typical action movie for the first 40 minutes.

Nice one! It's a pity that they kept the shot with the spaceship, it would be so awesome if there was a version without that scene!! I'd recommend to continue (in this order) with: Predator 2 (1990), Prey (2022) and Predators (2010).

What a cast! RIP Apollo Creed, Dillon Carl Weathers, may u live on forever! Jesse Ventura was an ex operator and actually bigger than Arnold, and they were never filmed standing together! Bill duke was an amazing actor...juliard trained and amazing in American jiggolo! Billy was a complete wildman and had 2 guys for 24/7 security. Not for his protection but to keep him out of trouble!! The helicopter pilot is the Predator! They gave him one speaking line, so he could get a film credit and his sag card! There's many more predator films and Alien vs Predator! There's also a much larger tie in here. Aliens predators humans Replicants and Terminators are all related by a race of beings called Engineers, discussed in the movie Prometheus! In the 80-90s, Arnold was the absolute movie king of the one liners/memes! So many to repeat, but the most repeated line and meme in history is, " I'll be back!" Hard to believe this movie is almost 40 years old! A future governor of California, Minnesota and candidate for Kentucky in this!

Hey, Veronique! "Predator" is a Schwarzenegger action classic directed by John McTiernan, director of "Die Hard", "Die Hard with a Vengeance", "The Hunt for Red October", "Medicine Man", "The Thomas Crown Affair" and "The 13th Warrior". The Schwarzenegger-accented "Get to the chopper!" became a popular catch-phrase that entered into the general lexicon. The Predator species name is YAUTJA (YOWT-ja). They are interstellar sportsmen whose entire culture revolves around big game hunting. They test themselves against apex predators which often includes sentient beings like man. They have a code in that they do not kill the unarmed or the infirm as it is not challenging nor do they kill pregnant prey as a way of husbanding the livestock. If vanquished, they leave no trace of themselves behind by detonating a powerful bomb so as to leave the "preserve" pristine by not contaminating the indigenous culture with their technology. As a rite of passage, they must blood themselves by killing a xenomorph from the "Alien" series. If prey is worthy by offering good sport and defeating the hunter, the tribe will bestow the victor with a trophy. There's a pretty good Predator fan film on KZbin set in the Middle Ages with knights called "Predator: Dark Ages" starring Adrian Bouchet (Steapa) from "The Last Kingdom"! The movie is an alien variant of "The Most Dangerous Game", the Richard Connell short story from 1924 which has inspired countless man-hunting-man movies like "Hard Target", "The Naked Prey", "Race with the Devil", "Southern Comfort", "The Running Man", "Surviving the Game" and "Beyond the Reach". The Central American guerrillas were probably Communists receiving supply and support from Russian advisors explaining the Soviet presence. Billy faced off against the Predator alone because he would rather die fighting than running; it was a matter of honor. He drew first blood with his machete so that the Predator would not have the privilege. It's a Native American custom. Anna was unarmed and, therefore, spared. Wounded Poncho was killed because he had already been marked as a combatant and was still holding a weapon. The Predator released Dutch, took off its mask and fought him hand-to-hand because it considered Dutch to be worthwhile prey. The Predator repeated Dutch's question back to him, "What the he!! are you?" as a way of expressing begrudging admiration for the puny meatbag that bested him. The last laugh was the Predator's mimicry. It was using a recording of Billy's laughter at Hawkins' lewd joke to express a fatalistic defiance to Dutch. Three of the cast went into politics! Schwarzenegger became Governor of California, former wrestler Jesse "The Body" Ventura, who played heavy-gunner Blaine, became Governor of Minnesota and Sonny Landham, who played tracker Billy, ran for Governor of Kentucky. Jean Claude Van Damme was supposed to be the Predator originally but he had difficulty with the alien suit as initially designed and was considered too small in stature to be threatening! Special Effects maestro Stan Winston was tasked with redesigning the alien to fit the 7'2" Kevin Peter Hall who appears, unmasked, as the helicopter pilot at the end. The dreds were inspired by a Rastafarian painting in producer Joel Silver's office and the mandibles were the contribution of a napkin sketch by director James Cameron who shared a flight and a brainstorming conversation with Winston by pure chance! Danny Glover stars in the underrated urban-set "PREDATOR 2" which has some memorable set pieces and provides more lore! Dark Horse comics capitalized on crossing the Predator franchise with the Alien franchise inspiring Hollywood to make TWO crossover "ALIEN vs. PREDATOR" films with moderately successful to excellent results. They're fun and exciting guilty pleasures with the second one, "ALIENS vs. PREDATOR: REQUIEM", being particularly lean and mean. There is also a "PREDATORS" film produced by Robert Rodriguez that is definitely worth a look. "THE PREDATOR" (2018) REBOOT, however, should be approached with caution as it very nearly killed the franchise! The 18th-century set "PREY" is an excellent prequel to the original film which was released on Hulu last August. The Alien films have a RICHER SUBTEXT while the Predator films are more ACTION FARE but they're both fun sci-fi thrillers. VIEWING ORDER: Alien Aliens (Special Edition) Alien 3 (Assembly Cut) Alien Resurrection (Director's Cut) [OPTIONAL] Predator (1987) Predator 2 Predators Prey Alien vs Predator Aliens vs Predator: Requiem (Unrated) Prometheus [OPTIONAL] Covenant [OPTIONAL] The Predator (2018) [EXTREMELY OPTIONAL] INTERNAL CHRONOLOGY: 1719 Prey 1987 Predator 1997 Predator 2 2004 Alien vs Predator 2004 Aliens vs Predator: Requiem (Unrated) 2010 Predators 2018 The Predator (2018) [EXTREMELY OPTIONAL] 2093 Prometheus [OPTIONAL] 2104 Covenant [OPTIONAL] 2122 Alien 2179 Aliens (Special Edition) 2179 Alien 3 (Assembly Cut) 2379 Alien Resurrection (Director's Cut) [OPTIONAL]

Fun fact: mud actually _does_ shield you from infrared vision (a KZbin channel called Corridor Crew recreated the gist of the scene fairly recently expecting to debunk it and to everyone's surprise, it worked). Thing about infrared is, it's just light, not magic so can be blocked fairly easily. Even window glass does it to some extent so in theory you could also hide from a Predator in a greenhouse :). And yep, fairly meme heavy this one. Good, solid 80s cheese IMO - I doubt anyone's going to accuse it of being a masterpiece but it's plenty of fun (and I completely agree about the spaceship BTW).

Special Operation teams train an insane amount so they can predict each other's moves and preferences this is key to their effectiveness; Dillon (Apollo Creed) has been running a desk so long he is out of practice throwing off their routines. These types of teams have and respect rank but in field and off they are brothers first rank second. They need to talk and act fast, so ideas need to be conveyed quickly to preserve the mission effectiveness and safety of team members. Jesse Venture the "sexual tyrannosaurus" who operates "old painless", was a Navy Seal in real life who served in Vietnam war.

Alien 3 end of the alien timeline Every other sequel/prequel are uninspired cashgrabs that bring nothing new to the corresponding franchises. also, AvP 1 is a somewhat decent standalone movie.
