ACTUAL Australian Shows me how to Hit the AUSSIE PUNT 🦘

There seems to be a few people wondering what I mean by an "Actual" Australian. In American football, there are private coaches who teach kicking and punting, so most of the time Americans learn this style from other Americans, so I figured I'd show how an "actual" Australian would teach someone to hit this punt. Hope that makes it more clear!

An error non-Aussies make, I think, is to remove the guiding hand from the ball just a fraction too soon. Give the ball a bit less air and a bit more guidance to the boot. It was shamed into us as kids, because if you removed both hands they'd say you "kicked like a girl." Lol.

The one artform in Aussie Rules that has disappeared is the actual Drop Kick. I learned to do that as a little girl. At age 63 I can still do a drop kick. The art part is in it hitting the ground as a semi bounce as you kick it. It is never used now but time for it to be brought back before the knowledge is gone. It has a time and place to be used.

@TheKira699 There is literally no place for it in the modern game. Regular drop punts are more accurate and easier to pull off, especially on the run. And if an opponent player has a hand on you as you go to do a drop kick then it’s dropping the ball. As you drop the ball on the ground before you kick it. So no there’s no reason for anyone to learn it anymore as there’s no place for it anywhere in the modern game.

Or stab passes mate...lm 58 & remember seeing players kick droppys & stab passes that went like a bullet 5-6 ft off the ground, if you're playing in front, no defender is punching that out your hands. Mob of checksides these days though, lot of em are great at em.

I saw Rod Jameson do a drop kick in his last game for the Crows, the crowd lit up. That, to my knowledge, was the last time a drop kick was used in the AFL

It's fun watching Bailey hit drop punts. I haven't played footy in many years but it's like riding a bike. You get a great feel on the distance and knowing where you're going to land the ball with a drop punt kick. In Aussie Rules you're interested in getting the ball to that point/player/goal as quickly and accurately as possible, so you kick drop punts that are flat and hard. That way, if it's dropped or spoiled it still tends to roll towards your teams goal. If you really want to go for distance with increased difficulty and less accuracy then you kick spirals, which is the same as a typical NFL punt. Obviously with punting you want to give your specials team enough time to get to the land of the ball, and for an Aussie Rules player kicking a high drop punt increases the accuracy of where you'll land the ball, plus the back spin on the ball increases the chance of the ball pitching backwards. Also, the way you drop the ball can influence the direction it travels when it lands if you want it to head to the sidelines. Aussie Rules players are born NFL punters.

You can see the extra force and power that Bailey puts in to the whole motion leading up to the kick. Especially in the shoulders and the arms as he brings the ball down towards his kicking leg.

Kicking 55 m is not average for Australian. It literally all depends on your genetics. There are some AFL players who don't take shots from 50 m out.

Most could kick it 50 from point of contact to landing(esp with a torp) Difference between kicking it 50, and clearing the man and goal defenders 50m is where it gets hard... need it to go 55-60m

i think most humans can kick a ball 50-55 metres. it starts getting difficult when you have to hit it over the man on the mark and make it across the goal line without getting touched

In footy you have to bounce the ball every 15 metres when running with the ball. Practicing/learning to bounce the ball is the exact ball handling required to kick the ball, and it is how kids develop the ability to guide the ball to their boot when kicking. Essentially when you bounce the ball it needs to land on that same spot underneath, where you hit the ball with your foot when kicking a drop punt. If you want to learn how to guide that ball to kick, practice bouncing it (walking,running, standing still.)

Don't confuse the 'Aussie drop punt' this guy is demonstrating with an 'Aussie Punt'. What Americans have always called a 'punt' in their game is called an 'Aussie torpedo punt'.

You'll be waiting a long time for Australian Football to take off anywhere in the world let alone the US. Is only big in the southern states of Australia and even there it's less popular participation wise than Football. Though is a better game to watch live than American Football.

I went to the European AFL cup and also watched a few games in New York in Central Park. They have a long way to go. At the 'European cup' they had a longest kick competition at half time. I won (20 Euros thank you very much) despite being a 19 year old who only played footy at recess in school. Watching the best Europeans (with 2 or 3 aussies on each team) and watching the yanks I just kept thinking about how much any Australian local team would dominate. Still, they had a lot of fun and there were mandatory beers afterwards. Saying that, this was back in 2007.

Thought they'd get a lot more than that with so many Victorian expats living in Queensland. Rugby League is having some NRL games in the US supposedly to spread the game but really is to promote it as an online gambling opportunity to Americans during the night when there is no local sport to bet on. Interestingly, they are having difficulty arranging training and playing grounds as there is a big American Rugby 7s tournament involving 50,000 players and supporters on in the cities were the games are to be played and they have booked all the eligible facilities.@@baabaabaa-El

The thing is, not that it would get used that often in American football, any Australian footy player can kick a flatter drop punt as a pass to another player quite accurately. Isaac was kicking those punts quite well I thought. Yeah as said elsewhere, this is a basic skill that most Aussies learn as kids in Aussie football states.

Looks like the Aussie flicks his toe up after contact to help with the back spin while the American way is to keep the toe pointed for the spiral. When I was a kid I never had a problem punting with the back spin because I couldn’t keep my toe pointed through the kick.

Learn as a kid using a balloon - have to control it down onto the foot. Both left and right foot.

I realise in Yank footy the aim is to make the ball float (hang time) but l rekn even Rice's lad here drop the ball to the foot from too high, you can still roost the pill 50-60m with height & accuracy. Search Tony Lockett, his drop punts were near perfect.

@@TheRastacabbageI In the AFL they don't! AFL is mostly about kicking (and handball). Both Rugbys hardly ever kick the ball, that is why most of their players are shite at kicking. Aussie Rules never uses the word "offense" but unfortunately the Americanized "DEEEfence" has crept into the Aussie Rules vernacular in the past few decades, when it should be just "defence" without the emphasis on the "DEE".
