Try using Laird Super Creamer for that morning coffee! Packs in a baggie; tastes better than dehydrated non-dairy creamer.

Great and informative video. Would love to see a similar one where you go through all the clothes that you bring on the trail. I always seem to bring too much.

Can you guys get plain rolled oats rather than being in the individual packets that as you mentioned have added sugars etc in them. We have them here in australia and use the traditional rolled oats and can be done cold soaked too…
@josephgetter2 жыл бұрын
for sure you can get plain oats stateside; the packets though also have some flavor or fruit, like cinnamon apple, and are more palatable. Agreed though that many oatmeal packets are way too sweet. Greetings to you over there, I aspire to visit and hike there in the next few years.

@@josephgetter we just add the flavours ourself into our own individual premade snap lock bags for each meal… then it can be exactly the way we like it… still can’t add dried fried and stuff like that too… all the packaged ones here are quick oats which have a higher GI which means it doesn’t keep you as full for longer, so by using the traditional oats, you get the benefits of the low GI foods while still being on the trail too!

A good breakfast combo. Protein powder or carnation breakfast. 4-5 oz. of oats. 1-2 oz. of nuts. Cold soaked.

The fancy word for flat bottom is gusset! And did you bring the Green Belly powder and whiskey for your oatmeal?

As a person with 2 nutrition degrees, I love these kinds of videos. Everything you said was spot on, good on you for looking for some better things to eat on the trail! Especially with non-thru hike prep, I think a lot of backpackers overemphasize weight over nutrition. Considering 99% of us are doing trips 7 days or less, I like this approach a lot better.

I have a budget alternative to the bot, totally different design, probably about a 1/5 of the price . You should look into getting a pot gripper, they are like $3-4 at bass pro

Thanks for sharing, couple of questions. What temp did you smoke your jerky at? I've got a smoker as well and had trouble keeping it down to 110 - 120. How much did your food bag weigh? I feel like mine always weighs a ton and like you, always over pack food items and never eat it all. We went to Raccoon Creek this past weekend and my 2 1/2 day supply of food weighed 6lbs and I didn't eat it all. Thanks again for sharing!!! -dave

Homemade beef jerky is so much more flavorful! Bulk dry goods section at the grocery store is a nice source for DIY trail mix.

Have you seen or tried the high protein cheese balls? I'm blanking on the name but it's about 20g protein per serving, which is a cup.

I did a similar length trip just recently, it was a good time to test foods/menu strategy. My focus was recovery, so also similarly upped the protein ratio. I discovered that my choice of high fat+protein low GI (keto) granola probably was too low GI for breakfast. It did seem to work for great energy later in the day but I was a little flat in the mornings. I’m guessing the slow release energy was just a bit too slow for the first part of the morning sessions. I also learnt that jerky is always a welcome snack, I paired it with butter shortbread which became my goto snack. I would love to hear how your food load out worked for you, I think those clif bars would have been dead weight that finished the trail with me. I look forward to your review! 🤓

You should buy reusable zip lock bags if you want to cut back on the trash. Also your ideas on what is nutritious or not quite right. Also you want to make sure you are taking your multivitamin with a more fat laden meal than oatmeal. The fat helps with absorption of some vitamins and minerals and promotes the production of bile which also helps with absorbing of certain things.
