You cannot have a just legal system without context though? Example: A man murders another man. Blind justice says he should go to prison. But the context is the murder was self defense. Therefore he's innocent. Or maybe a woman needs an abortion. Conservatives would shout 'no abortions no exceptions!'. But she needs it because she had a miscarriage, and to carry the dead fetus to full term may give her sepsis and kill her. Context. Is. Important.

00:49 Yeah, there are some based churches. The denomination my family belongs to (United Church of Christ) is pretty progressive as far as churches go. Their big thing is, "God is still speaking," where they basically say that God created his rules to evolve with society or something like that. They've even advocated for abortion rights and have a national sex ed program. I personally turned away from religion a very long time ago, so I don't know if they're necessarily promoting social justice, but they allow and officiate same-sex marriages, and my entire extended family (who are pretty devout UCC followers) were all very supportive of me when I came out as trans.
@Ephelle
@Ephelle 4 жыл бұрын
That same family is still pretty racist, still votes Republican, and absolutely hated Obama (which is funny because according to Wikipedia Obama is also a UCC member) so, you know, you can't win 'em all.

@@noh-1386 Yeah, my mom told me that when she told my grandma about me, my grandma went and talked to her pastor about it for advice, and she (yeah UCC even allows female pastors) apparently told my grandma how best to show her love and support for me which didn't at all involve preaching or scripture citing. Just actual, honest love and support. That story helps me remember that even if the religion itself is pretty awful, its followers don't have to be. And yeah, I'm absolutely voting. I live in Pennsylvania now so I know my vote is crucial. I'm pretty sure I've at least talked my mom out of voting for Trump, but she's still iffy on voting for Biden because she's afraid of socialism (and also she's had a lifetime of conditioning from her parents to always vote Republican), and I just haven't had enough time talking to her to unpack everything that's wrong with that. At least she lives in a super blue state so it won't make a huge difference either way.

The part about the families, one getting beat as a kid and one being in a living home. People are more likely to say a rapist is innocent if he was a positive part of the community or otherwise people cant believe he did it. And the right is more likely to say a criminal history means they are guilty of current crime without trial and its okay to kill them.

Many Conservative Christians see the crime in the world as an aggregation of all of the unsuccessful individual battles with sin. The solution is to give everybody the proper spiritual defenses against sin so that more of the battles are won. I believe in the purest of Christian worldviews that a world where everybody was poofed out of poverty but church attendance was equal would have an equal amount of crime (or at least sin, since maybe they would sin in a way that was not currently criminal) due to the issues with sin not being addressed. The idea of systemic causes of crime are problematic to this view, because that suggests that secular steps could be taken to reduce the amount of sin that is in the world. This is a large reason why they are closed to even entertaining this possibility. I feel like Innuendo Studios' video "I Hate Mondays" lays out this idea and how it applies to other Conservative beliefs as well.

The first catholic church I was a part of over in the UK, was all about social justice and living to the standard of the golden rule, love thy neighbour as thy self. That parish was intolerant of the beliefs often associated with Catholicism and was very active in the surrounding community. It's the reason I have a basis now, as an atheist, in protecting the rights and dignity of others and speaking out against bigotry when I see it. I know that this isn't necessarily the standard for catholic communities, and being apart of other parishes over the years has demonstrated to me how luck y I was that my starting point was so good. They do exist, but aren't the standard.

I love how their own logic ignores the fundamentals of actual criminal investigation. Motive, Motive, and Motive are keys to investigating and eventually convicting criminals. I mean we seldom use context to discern degree of culpability on the individual, but the idea that motivation is not a part of justice is patently absurd.

I'm an agnostic but my favorite thing about PragerU is that they never once have spoken of Herbert J. Taylor--a devout Christian who was so good at his job he was hired to revive an aluminum kitchenware company and took them from bankruptcy to a profit of over 20 million dollars... in the middle of the Great Depression. that's 20 million in THEN money, too. All because he went in and applied his Four-Way Test of the Things We Say and Do, a secular values rating system that actually saved the United States in negotiations with Japan after WW2. The test was secular, but it allowed him to continue to free up time for him to spend more of his life doing service in the name of Christianity. He was able to understand that he would never be able to bring people together if he had to force his beliefs on them in order to do so. It just doesn't make good business sense. The Four-Way Test concerns itself with asking these questions when a decision needs to be made: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Funny how they never mention him. It's almost like it's not about being a good Christian at all.
