That's what that means The fact that you are capable of masking is what makes it mild/high functioning It's a misconception because "mild" forms of conditions are still more debilitating than not having the condition. If it wasn't significantly debilitating then it wouldn't be diagnosable technically, for any conditions diagnosed solely by symptoms

@whyamideadindiscord3081
@whyamideadindiscord3081 2 жыл бұрын
Nah. You, firstly, don't need to show/have all symptoms of autism to be autist. Secondly, music and bright lights have underlying associations that may ease swallowing the pill, regardless of point 1. Although, the second point is just a guess and an opinion, no need to take it seriously. I haven't studied psychology or psychiatry, after all.

Not at all, there are sensory avoidant autistics (I don't like this fabric, this party is too loud so I'm going home) and there are sensory seeking (pressure, hug me! Let me squeeze my eyes so I can see the lights). Those can even exist in the same person lol. One can not like a sensory experience yet actively seek out another. Hey I’m recently diagnosed so pretty new to the online autism community. For any takers I have a question pertaining to terminology: So I’m seeing a lot of discourse about autism labels, as in high functioning/ low functioning. Which I get because even though I am “high functioning/mild” I do have intense executive function issues and just in general a hard time getting anything that requires effort done consistently. Guess I’m asking if there’s a correct way to refer to those on the spectrum who’re currently dubbed “severe,” as in cognitively impaired with little to no verbal communication abilities who have a much more difficult time than myself maintaining independence. I get it’s not a binary of minimal autism or maximum autism, so someone can be non-verbal and still intelligent, so I understand if this question has no simple answer, I’m just curious.
@aceonthecase9510
@aceonthecase9510 2 жыл бұрын
Happy to help you out,then! So from what I have learned, most people on the spectrum prefer to now use the terms "verbal" and 'non-verbal". This has less of the stigma associated with the high/low-functioning labels. I hope this helps you out, and I hope that you have a nice day! ^3^

Doing my best to repeat what I've heard from autistic creators: "high/low suppot needs" is a better frame of reference than "mild/severe" or "functioning". It's a spectrum, so of course someone can have high support needs in some areas, but are relatively independent in other areas. Verbal/nonverbal is not necessarily indicative of support needs. Hopefully this helps, and doesn't read as mad!

My family and I are aware that Autism is a spectrum disorder, but we have always described my older brother as "severely autistic", since he has the mental and emotional capacity of a 2-3 yr old, and he is handicapped. @gavin9278
@gavin9278 2 жыл бұрын
I've heard that using support needs as a reference point is more relevant and less mean. So your brother could be described as having high support needs, and the specific area(s) where that support is needed can be listed as well. This helps to reaffirm that all ppl are different; they might need help with some things, but are completely independent with other things. It's a great perspective when considering any type of person as well, not just autistic people! Hopefully this helps!

I have autism. There’s nothing wrong with us! Autism is not something to fix! There’s no such thing as mild or severe; just the level of support the individual needs! “Autism is caused by vaccines?” Who falls for that tall tale!?

0:47 I think it depends on where the person is like do a ‘and scoop!’ If their laying down if standing depends of your strength and back piggie back rides but if it was an emergency I highly suggest not picking them up unless your a professional and you might do more harm then good

I had two teachers (one knew I was autistic) and they'd both ask me to take my earphones out then I would just imagine beating them up cause it helped distract me from sensory overload

I do that a lot, minus the earphones and professional diagnosis. I’m just undiagnosed and violent lol.

0:26. All autistic memes are about how hard it is to mask, how hard it is to read people, how excruciating it is to experience sensory overload and then they hit you with a "oh no it doesn't ruin your life oh no we aren't suffering". CHOOSE WHICH ONE IT IS ALREADY

Nah we are all different autistic people lol People with a stronger autism (Mostly asperger too because we are varied a little bit, though i didnt really struggle on education) can't read easily People with a less stronger autism can't mask easily And every type of autism can experience sensory overload (If i stare at my phone for too long, I will feel the surroundings darken while my screen is more contrasted, the highest thing ever is street lights at night making my eyes basically burn)

Another thing that I experience because of overload is the sound pressure creeping me out and making me feel like a ghost

When I was younger I got really mad and upset when there was a lot of noise in the classroom, and I thought that I was like that because when I was younger I really liked Angry Birds. I thought it imprinted in my mind that anger = cool, and I got really mad at myself whenever I got mad. Turns out I just get sensory overload.

I’m not autistic but I relate with a lot of these- Like I can talk about the lore of cuphead for like 1 hour but nobody I know likes literally any of my interest so they usually tell me to shut up or they don’t listen and just leave the room or smt 🙁 Should I do something about that or nah-

Guy is sensory overload the thing where everything is too loud and bright and you start mentally shutting down or start having basically a mostly internal panic/anxiety attack bc those have started happening to me and i am starting to think im on the spectrum because i related to all of these that I understood

I find it interesting that it’s sort of a stereotype that autistic people like dinosaurs and that’s not entirely inaccurate. Obviously not everyone with autism has a wide knowledge of dinosaurs, but I am curious as to why so many people do. It’s like the meme about guys obsessing over the Roman Empire. Like, WHY are people so obsessed with certain things? And why are so many people obsessed with the same thing? What makes a topic more likely to be obsessed over? Does it have to be something in history that we don’t have full knowledge of and likely won’t be expanded too much as time passes? Or is it some other factor? And I don’t understand having a favorite dinosaur. Like, I sorta get having favorites, but I also kinda don’t understand

I'm suffering due to the fallout of a 5-month shutdown that left my life in a precarious state. Does that count as suffering due to autism? Eh, there are trade-offs, and I learned an important lesson about my own limitations.
