Well it's my birthday next week I'm going to be 50 years old, my entire career has been computer programming and I have a degree in Mathematics. Now I've been unemployed since the end of January 2023. I've been sending off applications all day everyday. Maybe it's that someone who is 50 years old doesn't match the stereotype or maybe it's something else, but no one wants to employ me and very few people want to even interview me. Some of the roles I've applied to are data science because I have all the skills, even though none of my previous job have had the words "Data Science" in the description. But I've had no luck. I think if I wasn't a fat middle aged guy who don't look cool and doesn't look hype and trendy, then I would get more interest. And I'm living in Germany where there are suppose to be plenty of jobs for everyone, OK I don't speak German, but there are English speaking jobs here. Any ideas what I can do?

First, happy birthday, and sorry to hear you've been struggling with the job search. I understand how disheartening the process can be. I think the first piece of advice is to focus only on what is within your control. You can't control your age, or if people will discriminate based on that, so we might as well not even consider it as a factor. What is within your control is how you market yourself. If you have the skills to do a DS role but no directly-relevant experience, how are you demonstrating that to potential employers? Do you have a strong portfolio, online presence, and a compelling narrative in your application materials and when interviewing? Are you confident and prepared in interviews, including aligning your experience with the role and company? These are things that no matter how well we do them now, we can always do better. Also, for what it's worth, I got my first DS job while living in Germany by cold emailing every potential employer I could find. I know we've all heard it a million times, but networking is key. That being said, while I am not fluent in German I was able to get by in a German-speaking workplace (lots of me speaking English and them replying in German -- interesting but it worked!) Anecdotally from my other expat friends in Germany having B1 German goes a really long way, and isn't *that* hard to do! So, of course that would give you more options as well. Best of luck!

@Gratitude.Driven I've got dyslexia and I've been trying to learn German for several years, I'm not at B1 level but I'm still going at it.

Thanks for the info Marina. I've put data science as my specialization in CSE degree. Would love to know the pathway and skills required to excel it.

I am finishing up a boot camp in data science and thinking of doing a masters. Do you think it’s worth it?
@Gratitude.DrivenАй бұрын
If your goal is to get a job, I would prioritize getting experience through projects. However, getting a Master's is definitely helpful mostly for having the peace of mind that you aren't going to be automatically rejected by resume scanners. I also made good connections and just enjoyed the process of mine. That being said, I wouldn't do it if you have to go into a lot of debt to pay for the program!

I am also trying to transition myself into a data scientist from SDE, but it's tough to find a job, I guess I lack the skills required

I will be putting out a video soon about which skills to prioritize -- hopefully that will be helpful!

Hello Marina, I am your new subcriber, just find out your channel. I really love the information you share here and the way to share it, it is very helpful❤❤❤. I am currently on my path to learn data science and machine learning by myself. Do you think that the person like me with non-tech background( I am a medical student, so I am 100% non-tech) is able to do it? Can you please make a detailed video about the necessary skill, course recommend or something like that to actually become completely self-taught data science and land the first job? I know it is a very difficult request, but I hope that you could help me and many more people out there to find out the answer. All of us will appreciate it❤. Thank you Marina❤

@@ToanNguyen-gk7bq Yes, I have a non-tech background and I did it, so you can too! I actually just finished recording a video with a complete roadmap, that should be out soon!
