I really don't know why high alt drops aren't done more often. Especially a large single or cluster from high alt keeps you outside of AA. Dropping from a little far out would work too and then it's a short retreat back to re up your ammo

A kinda risky maneuver I've been doing whenever I have a plane on my tail is to climb straight up until the enemy is following me, underneath, and then I dive down, getting the other guy to do the same, but then I do a loop to continue heading straight up. I've had luck with it in last ditch efforts
