My daughter got this when she was about nine months old she just looked like she had a cold she wasn't crying but something intuitively told me something was wrong she began to lose consciousness and I had to take her to the hospital because a doctor's clinic refused to see her because we were not registered. I had to find my own way to the hospital, in the hospital the doctors pinned me as an over-anxious mother and just gave her baby Capol they assumed her being unconscious was her sleeping, no one would listen to me. It wasn't till her arm swelled up and the side of her face turned a pink colour that any notice was taken they then took her oxygen levels they were so low that they did not believe the machines and used 3 different ones she was on the brink of death. My point in telling this story is that many doctors and nurses assume a child would have been blue or have a have blue-tinged lips but that was not the case for my daughter and has not been throughout her life with breathing issues, please if you are in the medical profession keep this in mind that some people with breathing issues can present with a blush colour as if feverish please don't take chances with young babies test their oxygen levels as even when she was put on oxygen when she fell asleep the machine would beep due to low oxygen please listen to parents they know what is normal for their child yes there will be the odd over anxious parent but they are very few and far between!

Being in young doctor in training, i've seen how some doctors and nurses end up downplaying the seriousness of the conditions when there's no apparent signs present to reach a serious diagnosis. In the absence of an experienced consultant, relatively inexperienced staff workers are equally tense and anxious whenever an odd ball serious case comes there way. There's been plenty of moments during my internship years where i was terrified to examine a serious patient as any trainee should be. But some just have too much overconfidence to act like they know everything. One can be overconfident inherently with their attitude but it takes serious lack of empathy to handle such patients that way. It infuriates me. Your baby was getting hypoxic and dull because of her condition and those doctors were too lazy to differentiate a dull baby from a sleepy baby!! If only they'd have gone just beyond their laziness to properly examine the baby and her vitals, you wouldn't hv gone through such ordeal. I'm glad to read they finally did took notice. Your story would be reminder me to stay extra cautious in my years ahead of becoming a good enough doctor. Thanks for sharing. ^_^

I just got out of the hospital with this condition. It's no joke. My throat closed up in a matter of 2 days and I had no idea. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please go to the ER immediately, because it could mean your life

Do you mind sharing the treatment for you? I believe one of my family members might have this illness happened to them a couple of times. Their voice is horse all the time seem to be getting worse told them to see an ENT specialist such as an otolaryngologist.

Symptoms of epiglottitis are usually rapid in onset and include trouble swallowing which can result in drooling, changes to the voice, fever, and an increased breathing rate. Thank you for explaining it in detail.

i was hospitalized for 9 days for epligotitis i came home recently and wanted to learn more about it. i will say this im 32 years old i was fine the day before.. i woke up with a slight discomfort that morning but by 10pm i couldnt breath or swallow. by the time i called 911 it was really bad i vomited and nearly drowned myself. when the EMT got there they fought to put a tube down my throat which i tried to fight against until we got to the hospital. once we got out the ambulance i was freaking out the last thing i remember is saying i was dying, peeing myself then waking up days later with a terrible case of delirium which lasted the rest of the time because of the drugs they put me on. when i got home they placed me on a steroid so i wonder if they had a conclusive study since the making of this video. i did learn a lot thanks.

I once saw a video of an emergency medicine doctor who overlooked the diagnosis of epiglottitis and the patient died. He was crying on stage... These mistakes must be really tough on everyone. Thank you for your awesome presentation!
@N3VLYNNN2 жыл бұрын
I've had epiglottis a few times as an adult. Whenever I would try to visit the ER in its early stages, the doctors would send me home-even when I was clearly showing symptoms. I always had to wait until it got extremely bad and call an ambulance. If you arrive in an ambulance, they have to treat you. My Mom is also a really assertive nurse so she would advocate for me and always set them straight over the phone or during visits. So this was not just this doctor's mistake -most doctors don't care about their patients enough to look deeper and will just send you away.

I’ve never been able to see my epiglottis before but today I noticed it and I was pretty concerned. It’s annoying cause a few days ago I got a canker sore near my tonsils which made it slightly annoying to swallow but now seeing my epiglottis has me a bit concerned. Im happy to learn how serious it could be.

I was in wrestling and my neck kinda cracked. I thought nothing of it until i talked and my voice sounded muffled and it feels uncomfortable to swallow. It feels very different from other things ive felt. Could i possibly have this.
Now am really scared, my 7year old has that structure visible but no symptoms and the GP I saw said pharyngitis. Though she has no complaints of pain or difficulty in swallowing. She's already on antibiotics, am heading to paediatric ENT tomorrow.
