16:38 "...as trains are used for the first time in war to transport military forces..." Don't want to be picky as you are doing great, but that isn't correct. Trains were used in the Crimean War and also earlier in the European wars of the 1840s. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_railways#Military_railways Much of the technology used in the ACW had actually been used before, ex trains, ironclad ships, trench warfare, photography even submarines and etc etc. Many of these technologies are often incorrectly said to be used first in the ACW, though it can probably be said that it was used in larger scale in America in the 1860s. Thank you for a good video and nice channel! :)

@phe123 I completely agree. Great content like this always makes you want more. I'm excited to see more battles in Missouri. Particularly Price's last ditch campaign from Pilot Knob to the Battle of Westport. (Apparently Price was so fat at that point in the war that he couldn't even ride a horse, and he irregulars in his army had pillaged so much, they had a slow moving wagon train just moving across the state.) I'm from Missouri, and we're hardly taught anything that happened here.
@talamioros3 жыл бұрын
I would much rather you produced more fresh content and move further into the war before going back to refight old battles, especially since you don't exactly post new content very often and I've been waiting precisely for the actual big campaigns to start. You do great work and First Manassas DOES need improvement since it was your first experiment, but I wish your priorities were different.

You got the call for volunteers backwards. Davis called for a 100,000 volunteer force on March 6th, over a month before the attack on Fort Sumter, not in response to Lincoln's call for 75,000 volunteers the day after.
@therandomnessnetwork165810 ай бұрын
Thank you for correcting that, it's the unfortunate truth but somewhere down the road most people were convinced Davis called for 100k after Lincoln called for 75k and multiple videos on the topic say that even though the dates of said requests should dispell that notion

What‘s striking is how much more consistent the Confederate High Command is than the Union side, almost shockingly so. Before Manassas, the commanding officers of the Confederate Troops in the Area are Beauregard and Johnston, and four years later the senior Confederate Generals next to Lee will be…Johnston and Beauregard. Also at Manassas in no particular order: Longstreet, Jackson (obvs), Ewell and Early, all incidentally already as division commanders. I’ll have to go through again to see who I can spot, but for the most part both future Senior Generals (even temporary ones) and even the future Corps commanders of the Army of the Potomac are conspicuously absent. Certainly none of them show up in command or as division commanders. Sherman and (I think) Thomas show up commanding brigades, and they both notably end up in the Western theatre for the rest of the war. Btw, this isn‘t necessarily a good thing for the Confederates, it‘s just interesting. After all, in theory they have more officers to chose from, but they still end up with the same handful of guys. Whereas Lincoln ends up mostly relying on commanders from the West, plus Meade who was only a brigade commander halfway through the war.
@nathanbrady8529Ай бұрын
A contributing factor to this is the pseudo-feudal social structure in the South. A significant portion of the professional U.S. officer corps was southern aristocracy. That's how you end up with an engineer leading line infantry; they had the rank and stayed loyal.

First shots were fired by the North, fired by the USRC Harriet Lane in Charleston Harbor on the ship Nashville on April 11th, the first shots of the naval war. Thus the union fired first.
@hissyhonker2202 жыл бұрын
Yes that's true, also true is the firing on ft Sumpter was forced, there was a union fleet inbound to reenforce the Garrison and that is what triggered the firing, allowing the north to claim self defense when anyone who's military knows the truth is that fleet did it's job it forced the confederates hand causing the war to go hot. The same way Roosevelt would try to con America into war with Germany in WW2 with the Navy escorting allied convoys across the Atlantic shielding them from U boats. It is not technically illegal but morally, Lincoln did the same and that strategy is not new but very old and been done countless times throughout history.

I have always wondered what would have happened if Fort Sumpter had not been attacked as that seems to be the tripping point where the North would fight. Would the US have split or would some compromise have happened as many in the South knew that slavery was a dead end and freedom for them was going to happen eventually.
@jamesmccrea48712 жыл бұрын
War was still coming. Lincoln did not want to attack first, but I think he would have if it came to it. The southern states had been aggressive throughout the "cold war" between December and April, taking federal forts, arsenals, calling for volunteers, forcibly removing and in some cases escorting US soldiers across their borders into other states that hadn't yet seceded. All before Sumter. It had to be answered for, and would be answered for. If not at Sumter, someone else would have drawn a lone in the sand and a shot would be fired.
@jamesmccrea48712 жыл бұрын
Slavery was not dying. Its was at its highest point of growth and value. None of the arguments that "slavery was dying" are really convincing. Even the argument that the south was building its manufacturing infrastructure falls flat when you recognize that slave owners quickly realized that a slave than work a factory floor as easily as a white man, and without wages.
