Little fact: The Union Cavalry which surprised JEB Stuart and captured his hat and dispatches was commanded by General John Buford, the same John Buford who would hold back the Confederate advance at Gettysburg, and help secure the high ground to the south of the then small Pennsylvania town.

@@SoCalYar id have to think, but its arguably more egregious here than the Peninsula. You can’t send the 6th Corps because you don’t know where Pope is? How? You just sent a brigade to Manassas and its got destroyed, so now you hesitate to send a Corps?

I’m shocked 2nd Manassas isn’t a bigger deal. It was so much more wide-ranging geographically and no less strategically important than the early Confederate victory at 1st Manassas. Arguably more so, given the action in the Shenandoah and down by the Rappahannock that preceded 2nd Manassas

My g-g-grandfather, whose image is my avatar, was killed at the Battle of Bristoe Station/Kettle Run. He was in the 60th Georgia Infantry of Lawton's Georgia Brigade, Ewell's Division. They were positioned behind a deep railroad cut on the flank of the advancing forces of Hooker. Eventually a New Jersey regiment was sent to flank the flankers and they fired a volley into the 60th Georgia, killing my ancestor. He's buried somewhere on the battlefield. His image is on a battlefield marker less than 100 yards from where he fell. I allowed them to use the image in trade for a personalized tour of the battlefield. LOL They assigned a guide to me and my sons who had been preparing for me by metal detecting to find the firing line of the 60th Georgia. A line of dropped, unfired bullets were found indicating the firing line position. We took photos from the approximate position of his unit. I took a handful of dirt and a rock to put by his grave marker in Georgia. His firing line was positioned just off the battlefield boundary on private land and I had permission to take dirt and rock. Anyway it was great being a guest of honor at the 150th commemoration of the battle.
