Being a Catholic , I don’t mind them being agnostic, because I know that they’re still the same, kind, genuine, funny people they were before, but now they’re happier. I don’t understand why people give them such a hard time with these types of things. It makes me kinda sad honestly, they shared some of their most vulnerable moments in their lives and people give them crap about it, mythical beasts we’re supposed to be there for them and each other.

Let me know if this feels hurtful as well (still trying to figure out what I belive about sensuality and such so if I do say something hurtful I apologize in advance just trying to learn and grow here) I don't think (in a perfect world) we should be defined by our sexuality. I understand that the world is so overly heteronormative that being anything else can become who you are as a person because you have so much culture trying to take that away from you but I see it a lot like being a minority (I'm black myself) I have come to define who I am by my life experiences wich are shaped (in part) by the judgments of me and my skin living in a white world (NA). But in a perfect world those judgments wouldn't exist and I wouldn't have to be defined by my different experiences because they would not be different. My skin would be a color and nothing more. Is that something you can relate to? Also sorry if this is a lot for KZbin lol. Ret and link got me deep thinking

I burst into tears. I came out during the legalization of same-sex marriage, and most of my peers at my Catholic school were attending marches against it. A lot of people have come around over the years, but I attend grad school with former peers that still refuse to talk to me because of my sexuality. I've been open to engage people on this subject in a non-judgemental way and remain open to different beliefs with as much tolerance and grace as I can muster. Oftentimes that doesn't get rewarded, but sometimes it does and someone geuinely has a change of heart.

@@christianboesch3459 The Woes of the Pharisees is basically a scathing criticism of fundamentalist religion, its obsession with literalist interpretation of the Bible and the rituals of religion, but its complete disregard of the greater lessons of things like justice or mercy. Not to mention Jesus also disobeyed religious law by healing the sick on a Sabbath as well as preaching to the outcasts. He also taught the parable of the Good Samaritan. The true impact of that story is lost to most Christians today and in the Middle Ages. Back in Jesus' day, Samaritans were regarded by the Jews as heretics and half-breeds, and they hated each other immensely. For someone to portray a Samaritan as not only a good person, but also better than a rabbi and a Levite was scandalous. Most of Jesus' teachings were humanist. If Jesus was alive today, he'd be cast out by the evangelist churches for being a hippie. If he lived a few centuries ago, he'd be burned at the stake for being a heretic.

Unfortunately, they don’t see that the hate that they supposedly left behind is even more prevalent on the side they now associate with, it’s just directed the opposite direction. Rhett & Link may not harbor that hate (I don’t think they do) but the left hates anyone who doesn’t agree with them, while simultaneously preaching love & acceptance. That isn’t “progressive” and history has already left attitudes like that behind. The true fascism lies on the left.
@fdstofarto
@fdstofarto 4 жыл бұрын
@@thecrippledrummer A famous quote I read once said that if a society truly became 100% tolerant it soon enough would become intolerant. That is because if tolerant people tolerate intolerant people the latter will eradicate the former. Let's say we live in a utopia where everyone is free to do what they want. Shouldn't we still have a police force to monitor people's freedom and make sure they don't use their freedom to hurt others? Free speech means you can and should say what you want but what if you're spouting racist/sexist things or support pedophilia? Surely you deserve consequences. I'm not saying the right is doing any of that obviously (just using extreme examples to make my point), but what I'm trying to say is that there's no such thing as intolerant left as much as there is intolerant right. Both sides do not tolerate what they deem to be intolerable. You can't "preach love & acceptance" without denouncing hate and bigotry.
@fdstofarto
@fdstofarto 4 жыл бұрын
@@thecrippledrummer Also sorry to disagree but I would definitely say that the fascism is usually more on the right side. Not to say that right wing people are more violent or that left wing people are NOT violent, both sides have their bad apples the left is no exception. But I do say that usually when you hear about any deadly event its fault usually falls on right wing extremists(attention to the word extremist I am in no way blaming these on right wingers, simply on right wing Extremists). Lets say mass shootings, the Charlottesville nazi thing etc usually right wing extremists tend to be more violent than left extremists. Once again not saying that it is the right wings fault, simply the fault of right wing Extremists. If you look at it in a plainly economic view there shouldn't be a side that even has fascism. Simply one side favors less State Responsibility while the other favors it more. However the Right wing tends to attract all kinds of bigotry because unknowingly its a system that helps hate thrive. An economic Us vs Them mentality is what usually helps bigoted movements take off. Nazi germany "Jews are stealing from the Aryans" Post Colonial Wars "the blacks are destroying our culture" As of today "immigrants are stealing our jobs" It is not the economic plans fault this is happening, but the fault on the people that take advantage of the system to further their own bigoted beliefs. To have a 100% capitalist state that somehow still ensures every freedom and civil right to minorities there would need to be someway to police the systems very own infrastructure to make sure that these bigoted people don't manipulate capitalism for their own agenda. However since capitalisms whole idea centers around LESS state envolvement it is inevitable to be taken advantage of by a bigoted well spoken individual as it has happened multiple times throughout history.

“Disappointed” was the biggest response I got from people when I left the faith. A lot of extended family and family friends responded that way. “I know you’ll come back” was a sentiment that certainly got under my skin. I get why people were saddened. My past self would definitely have been disappointed. I’m the son of a pastor and I spent a decade in ministry. There were a lot of expectations for my future in the church. There were people who prophecized that I would be a pastor or missionary. Thank you guys for sharing. I really appreciate y’all sharing your journey.

My boyfriend has had such a similar reaction (he was Catholic), especially the "I know you'll come back," which has such an ominous ring to it. I now forget *exactly* what the wording was, but his mom expressed that sentiment in such an odd, weirdly ominous way that it became kind of an inside joke for the two of us for awhile. And I remember how hard it was for him, echoing what you said about your past self being disappointed. But he is SO much happier, so much less stressed about certain types of things, and he has grown so much as a person and become so much more accepting and understanding of different types of people and it's awesome, and wound up being really helpful when it turned out his little sister is gay cause we were able to give her a lot of support (and his family was good about it- they're good people). Sorry. I got carried away. Mostly I just wanted to say that while they may be disappointed, I, a completely random stranger on the internet, am super proud of you! As long as you're being a good person, your faith really shouldn't matter, and I hope your friends and family come around on the idea and support you wholeheartedly! It's hard to stay true to yourself sometimes, but it's worthwhile. Good luck, dude!

I know it’s weird I had a similar story but my faith stayed, but I lost my faith in the church, I spent years in the church, all my life in fact ( father was a preacher who like to beat my mother). And I got to the point I felt like church was the fakest thing I ever seen. I seen missionaries take thousands of dollars and go on “ mission trips “ to places like Romania, India, turkey. For a few days, and then come back talking about how they “planted seeds” but they didn’t understand they use god for a vacation on peoples money. I also seen people come in and pray for a cold and come back 3 days later praising god because it was over. Speaking in tongues as if to be possessed by god, every Sunday but being the same horrible person Monday through Saturday. I got in a wreck once and I don’t drive over the speed limit since. So a supreme being takes hold of you and you don’t change at all? An I can think of a thousand of those instances, but I’ll digress, but I learned a lot of my faith was not with god it was with the people in it. So I separated my self from church’s and studied the Bible for myself. And I learned church is 50% biblical and 50% peoples opinion. And that’s what drove people away. Not pressuring you to do anything I’m just saying I understand why a person would question it.

I'm probably gonna not articulate this correctly but, that kind of mindset comes from a place that doesn't genuinely see people or value them. To copy what my parents would say now, it doesn't see them as jesus would see them. It's only about being in "the in group". That it's them against the world, and if you leave that group, you're doomed. So they'll take many tactics to try and drag people back, through fear, shame, guilt, etc. But the actually good that group does outside of itself, is next to nill, or if it does do good, it comes with strings attached (i.e pulling those people into the in group). Whereas what most "Liberal Christians" including my parents now, just want to be good people for people. And that goodness spreading is what me and my parents want even though we don't agree about gods existence.

Interestingly enough, it was my Mormon mission at the age of 19-21 that started the ball rolling that ended with me leaving the Church about 6 years later. I loved the people in the country I served in so much and I just couldn’t believe that those people were going to a lesser heaven just because they believed differently than me, or because they drank alcohol or coffee, or had pre-marital sex, etc. I grew to hate the “us and them” mentality of religion (or at least religious fundamentalism), and it ended with me becoming agnostic. I have my Mormon mission to thank for that. 😊

The EB where he talks about why he's growing out his hair also confirms that he's aware of his insecurities, and he's working on not caring as much. Our entire life was wrapped up in this church. We had no friends outside of this church, knew if we left we would be shunned by family and friends (10 years later some have still never spoke to us again) It's a very very hard step. We are still Christian but the fact that we are not THEIR flavor of Christian, wear pants, cut our hair, and believe in Grace we are going to hell. It's amazing how much that type of an upbringing shapes your life in every way. I 100% know where they are coming from. Not an easy announcement.

As far as which is harder to walk away from, I'd probably argue the church is harder to walk away from. Church is a real thing, that brings community in your life, they have family, friends, and have fun while they are there. I think they are saying a lot of things people feeling "stuck" in the church have been thinking about for years. I'm somewhere along that spiritual deconstruction timeline starting about 6 years ago and am still figuring it out. I dont think anyone was "butthurt" that they believe something different. It had more to do with how Rhett and Link were a sort of role model. I remember watching their show when i was little and thinking, "I can be a normal person and also be a christian". I actually do feel a little betrayed by them changing their minds. To clarify, I dont mean that literally. More like I felt a little sad that someone I looked up to has changed their beliefs from mine and so the similarities between me(the viewer) and Rhett and Link are now gone. Rhett and Link are their own people that make their own decisions about what they believe and they don't owe it to you or anyone else to believe a certain way. And besides that there is nothing wrong with other people having different beliefs than you or me (as long as they aren't harmful). I really hate snickers candy bars and I think they are disgusting, but if I see my friend getting a snickers out of the snack machine at work, I'm not going to get upset about it and feel betrayed. Why should it be any different with religion? Just accept that everyone has their own view and move on. JLocke573 “admit that they are wrong” this is a logical fallacy. Why would they say they believed in something but thought it was wrong? @@tylergarza8695 I'm not really sure how it's a logical fallacy. Many people that are confronted with information that challenges their whole religion/worldview simply brush it aside or come up with a fallacious reason why they are still right and then never think about it again. People who are very attached to their religion are very unwilling to give it up. You can sit there all day pointing out every single reason why they are wrong and they will still not admit that their religion is false. If you watch any atheist call-in shows you can see it happen all the time. Hell I used to be a christian and I did the same thing. I would think about some problem with christianity, and I would come up with some excuse for why it didn't matter and continue on believing in christianity. That's what I meant by "admit that they are wrong" I had to get to a point where I was willing to admit that there problems with my beliefs and allow myself to examine them objectively.

I went through a religious deconstruction about 10 years ago and it was the toughest thing I ever went through. I lost family, I lost friends, I lost certain peoples respect, trust and more. I still feel the negative effects 10 years later but I was in a place where I could no longer live a lie and I dont regret it at all. I was mormon and there are so many benefits that come along with being a part of that inner circle. I would guess that close to 50% of active mormons dont actually believe what the church teaches but stick around for those benefits. The church will pay your bills if youre going through a rough time, there is a great sense of community, its a great place for business networking and its a safe way to raise children. For me, there aren't enough benefits that I could receive that would allow me to live a completely obvious lie.

This is something I struggled with for sure. The sense of community and care was so integral to my view of the world as a child, and losing that was really hard. Like, when I was in high school my (very healthy) dad got really sick, was in the ICU for a month and almost died of pneumonia. I don't think we cooked a single meal for like two months. Church members came to our house to clean and cook and babysit, drove my mom to the hospital 2 hours away, and the pastor and youth pastor went up to the hospital several times to pray with her and my dad. I'll always be grateful for everything they did for us. Thankfully, my dad recovered and is healthy today. But damn. Growing up, losing my belief, and realizing that there is no easy way to get that community care anywhere but religion was really hard.

Yes it's disheartening as a Christian but I am not to judge nor should I force my beliefs. If people are willing to have a conversation I explain the Gospel and ask if they would like to learn more and eventually invite them more to a church function and even if they still do not believe that is ok. The biggest reason I tell nonbelievers to attend church other than the Gospel is to have a community. Knowing that you can have a group of people who will help when times get tough. I am sorry they are being judged harshly since they decided to leave the faith. It's not for us to judge but is it for us who believe to pray. We still support one another.

But so is "God is real, idiot"...the removal of the word "idiot" might make it a little more palatable, but still...you're trying to tell someone how they should/should not believe. That's not cool. That is the crux of the entire issue I have with this whole Rhett & Link religious discussion. When I first started watching them, not too long ago, I watched their older stuff first and gradually started incorporating their newer stuff. I fell in love with their banter, their humor, and their creative genius. I felt like, based off their countenance, and the fact that they didn't have the same questionable content that many other shows like them had, the fact that I could watch it with my entire family, led me to believe there was some form of religious background or belief system, because if not, why did they make a point to avoid those things? Simple. To build a fanbase. Now that this fanbase is built...and their belief structure has changed/evolved/whatever you want to call it...they've decided they want to bring more adult conversations and such into their content. So instead of just doing that and casually have those who don't want to watch that kind of content taper off, they decided to spend several weeks deconstructing the faith that they claim to have had, using their platform to tear down those who believe that way, or at least to cause them to have questions that maybe they didn't have before. I'm a believer, and I listened to most of what they had to say, and it didn't alter what I believe or how I live my life...but I feel for those who were struggling with doubt, or worry, or fear, who listened to this and can now use it as a crutch to detach themselves from something that was most likely helping them more than they realize. If they would've just started cussing in their videos, having tons of innuendo and stuff that I didn't really feel was appropriate for me to watch with my daughter, WITHOUT the whole Christian-bashing thing...I might've just said "well, I guess they weren't believers after all", because I watch plenty of movies and KZbin content and things of that nature from people that I know are not believers like myself, and it's fine. They're not trying to change me, and I'm not trying to change them, because they're just entertaining me, I don't have relationships with them where I can have a conversation with them. I allow them in my home, through my phone or TV, but that's pretty much it. Basically what Rhett and Link have done is exactly what Mr. (Or Mrs.) "I eat Da booty" have done in the above comment...said "God isn't real idiot" to all of those who have followed and supported them and made them who and what they are. It feels disrespectful, and it feels intentional. There's no innocence in doing what they've done how they've done it...and it's disappointing. I can't change them, but I can, and I will pray for them, as I do for all of those who find themselves convinced that God isn't real. Calling me an idiot isn't going to change that.

Ryan Banes I don’t know quite where to even go with this, but I don’t understand how “here is something about me that I’ve changed over time because of these things and these reasons and this is the process of questions I had” became “you’re stupid for being Christian.” You say you worry because people who were “on the fence” might have been swayed by their discussion, but isn’t that the point of being human? To have the freedom to question, doubt, and then choose for themselves. Being Christian doesn’t shield you from questioning just as being agnostic or atheist doesn’t either. I’m happy for you that you feel secure in your faith, but to denounce Rhett and Link for being secure in their beliefs is hypocritical, inconsiderate, and ironically un-Christian. I hope you find peace elsewhere if you decide Rhett and Link are not for you.

Ryan Banes you don’t have to be religious to realize family friendly content will reach a larger audience you sound very ignorant. The fact that so many people have to struggle with leaving any faith makes me very sad. I luckily was not indoctrinated as a child to any religion. My mom believed in a higher power but never taught me that I would go to hell if I didn’t believe in a god. Which made it very easy for me to become an anti-theist. I don’t think children should be indoctrinated into religion or told the word of any god until they’ve reached the age of reason.

@@Chai_bug I didn't say they were stupid for being Christian, or not Christian...it was the commenter above me who chose the words "God's not real idiot", and so that was kind of what put me in the mindset to respond to all of this. And to say I am "denouncing" Rhett and Link is to put them in a category that no human belongs. They're not gods, they're not God, they're people... I'm not going to find any more peace watching Rhett and Link than I will if I don't watch them, they don't have that kind of power, no person does. The problem is when we put error-prone, imperfect, flawed humans in that space. The only end result can be disappointment. People will let you down, I don't believe God will. And I'm sorry, but I don't see how anyone is truly secure having "no belief", which is the root of Agnosticism and Atheism. Sure the outer shell might appear that way, but I would argue that there is far more going on under the surface than they would ever choose to let on. And such is their right. The right to choose, the right to voice opinion, the right to be who you are and what you want to be. I'm just of the mindset that there's more to it than that, if there's not, then it feels like a very sad existence, to live and die and then nothing. There's no hope in that, especially when none of us know when or where or how we will leave this world physically. I have and most likely will continue to watch Rhett and Link, as entertainers, they're top notch...as human beings, I'd be lying if I said I hadn't lost some manner of respect for them. To make your own choice is simply that, your own choice, but it feels as if they're using their platform to influence the choices of others in a direction that I can't and won't believe is good, or healthy, and such is my right. Like it or not these comment sections are forums for opinion, and if Rhett and Link can express theirs so openly, why can't I?

The fact that they essentially give us a look into their lives or their way of thinking is amazing and for that I am truly grateful. This is my belief, as agnostic as well: I don't care about religion. I have too many things in my life on a day to day and overall basis to worry about whether or not god, heaven, hell, etc is a thing. I'll just live my life, be a good nice person, and that's it. If when I die I find myself in heaven and realize it's actually a thing, cool, I guess. It's ridiculous how some believers think that not being religious makes you automatically go to hell when you die too. It's super hypocritical and insane that this god *needs* to be praised, otherwise you're fucked eternally. That seems more evil than good to me.

Its also my wife and my prerogative to unsubscribe our accounts and our children's account from Good Mythical Morning and encourage all our friends who children watch to do so as well. All it takes is to show those parents the video where Rhett and Link's female producer describe a Christian who disagrees with her political point of view as a "POS" ( full vulgarity used) and Rhett and Link just laugh. I went through a whole existential crisis in elementary school when I started thinking stuff didn't make sense and realizing I didn't actually believe any of it... I live in georgia and legit thought I was the only one and that I would be smited for having doubts... Luckily the internet was a thing and I slowly started to be able to put a name to my thoughts and see that I wasn't alone. My journey from religion to atheism was a very hard one, especially when it came to telling family so they'd stop making me go to church... But I feel so so free as an adult. I'm not disallowed from questioning anything and I can say "i don't know". I now know that's a really good thing. I went through the phases of fear and anger. I was exiled and interrogated. Now as a full grown adult I love open conversation about my lack of belief because sadly not alot of people have met an atheist.. Yes that's a ton of weight on my shoulders at times but I rather they just ask me as a person rather than assume I believe or act the same as someone they saw in a meme or in a youtube video. Ultimately it's super simple. I don't believe, I can't make myself believe and neither can some stranger.

As a believer (won't say any denomination to avoid stereotypes), this was a great podcast to listen to, hearing their journey. I think it's sad for people to "attack" them for their faith and their decisions, because that's not what we're supposed to do. Now, I have responses to some of their statements, but that doesn't mean that I don't respect them or that I now dislike them. Far from it actually, as I feel like I know them more personally and can still enjoy their content, despite their beliefs. I don't like to say I'm part of a specific organization because I have my own beliefs from my interpretation of the Bible that many other believers may say that I'm wrong, while others may agree with me. It's a sensitive topic, but talking about things like this makes it easier to talk about later on as people get comfortable with it. We're not supposed to yell that one another are wrong, we're supposed to TALK about these things and say which we believe and LISTEN to one another as well.

As Christian I feel you put yourself out to the ocean. But atheist have no lead but science and I feel it’s more of a yearning too how they connect their former belief to this new belief ( or lack their of ). So I feel that atheist clings to science but have an emptiness in them because science is their faith but theirs no need for a church for that. And agnostic is such a floating idea I feel any type of church would have a singular idea. Which is the exact opposite idea of an agnostic. Maybe on the surface it’s the same, but deeper every agnostic is different. I mean I’m Christian by faith but I believe in the god of the Bible but I don’t believe that the teachings from the Bible. @@Trippingthroughadventures science isn't a faith and atheism is an answer to a single question: are you convinced there's a god. The answer to that question for atheists is no. You are making a lot of assumptions here about what atheists believe that are simply unfounded. It makes me think you haven't actually talked to many with the honest intent of learning what we believe and why. I'd strongly recommend you try talking to them before continuing to make bad assumptions because I for one don't have any emptiness inside me. I lead a moral and fulfilling life just fine without a god thanks. In fact I'd date say that I find my life more fulfilling without god than many theists I know seem to feel with a belief in god. There are good and honest conversations you could have with atheists if you do want to learn what we believe. Most are happy to talk about it so long as you aren't approaching it from the angle of trying to proselytize and convert them. So go have those conversations. Stop making assumptions and learn what we actually believe. Find where that common ground is between your beliefs and your approach to life and ours. I think you'll find life much more fulfilling if you do take the time to understand rather than assume.
