I would KILL to have this kind of memory recall. It must be so helpful to have another person alongside you during your entire memory forming life so you can strengthen these memories during discussion. I'm 24 and I have issues recalling things from high school and college. They talk about these things with such CLARITY. Obviously these are pivotal moments in their lives, but jeeze, I can't imagine recalling song lyrics I wrote on a paper plate. Outstanding.

It makes them a normal human being, with trying out new things and listening to something that they may have not heard yet. That's called being interested in content that a creator they like, puts out. Also, quite sexist with the "fanboy" part, given not everyone is a boy.

I really respect you all for delving into such a personal and complicated subject. This resonates deeply with me as someone who grew up in a baptist church my whole life with a father who is a preacher. I haven't even finished watching this yet (I will) but I know that when your views start changing and you begin questioning certain aspects of almost inherently held beliefs, it can be difficult in many ways. Besides the disappointment/judgment you may start experiencing from family and friends, it can also seem as if a war is ongoing inside yourself. As a 31 year old who has experienced some travel, various schools (doctoral student), and just meeting so many different individuals, my belief system has underwent big changes with no 100% definitive conclusions in all aspect. In other words, this is something I still grapple with in many ways. Wrapping up this extremely long comment, again just wanted to say kudos for being open to talking about such subjects and I truly believe that the majority, if not all of your fans will be open and understanding that everyone's beliefs deserve to be respected and diversity in this regard is what makes the world great.

I've been waiting SO LONG to hear these stories, wondering your mindsets, where the changes started coming in from what you were back in the day. Im particularly excited to hear Rhett's story, ever since he wrote that public essay about confederate statues, he confirmed my idea that he hadn't particularly always felt aligned with the ideals of those around him. I'm so glad that you guys moved and sorta chose your own, safe social circles, and i've honestly been so proud and happy and warm to see the progress you two have made within yourselves and as people.

As someone who grew up in the Deep South (Mississippi), I'm glad that you find yourselves comfortable enough to discuss this. I find that a lot of people from the South who are KZbinrs or other internet people don't talk about their lives growing up re: religion and what not (whether for fear of backlash or whatever else), and it's nice to be reminded that you're not alone in this environment. Knowing that y'all grew up in North Carolina, I wasn't particularly surprised by any of this (except did Link say he had bleached hair y'all's freshman year of college?) but I am glad that you felt comfortable sharing it. I eagerly await the next installments.

I first started watching GMM in 2013, a year after leaving a very deeply religious, very involved on-campus ministry. I have always known a little bit about this and have been waiting all these years for you to unpack it all! At last! So much of what you say resonates with me (and friends of mine from that time who are your fans as well). I am going to be waiting impatiently all week for the next episode. I so look forward to hearing about your journey, as you have both been a part of my own all this time. Man getting old is wild.

Thank you for telling your story. I was raised southern baptist in middle TN so I completely understand where you are coming from. I fully understand how difficult it can be to tell this story. While I no longer believe many of the things I was raised to believe, many of the ways I was raised inform who I am today, just as you have said. I know it isn't easy to tell this story but I applaud you for doing so. It is clear that you love and support your crew, and many of them are LGBTQIA. Your fans love and respect you, and if they're anything like me, they will respect you even more for telling this story (and I hope they all understand why you were reluctant to speak on it. I know I do). Your respect and thoughtfulness to your crew and your fans is not diminished because of where you came from, and I would argue, that being who are you is made all the more impressive, considering where you are from. Thank you for this personal look into your adolescence and I look forward to continuing with you on your journey.

My dad is a Baptist Minister here in Kentucky, so I was raised in much the same way as you guys, and I am the lead singer of a rock band which I started doing to confront my own social anxiety disorder. Loving this revelation and greatly looking forward to the next episode! Your inspirations, influences, reflections, and personalities are all invaluable components of what make you, YOU, and your fans adore you. Origin stories are fascinating. Keep fighting the good fight and being yourselves.

As a guy who had a very religious family and went to a small private chrichtian school this episode was actually very comforting.

My husband and I started a church after seeing the abuse and judgements the church, was heaping on people. I started watching your videos after we received so much backlash for doing what we were doing. It was so helpful to have something funny to lighten my heavy days.

A really thoughtful and enjoyable ep and it really does connect the dots for some of the stuff you have done (including the importance of the church in the novel). Im really glad your faith gave you the opportunity to hone your creative skills. Im personally not religious but have always appreciated those that are and are welcoming and accepting.

I've had a long history with religion and I'm not a fan of proselytizing. That being said, it's incredibly interesting to hear about the other side of religion from two people I deeply respect. It's so fascinating to me to see how big of an influence religion can be in people's lives. Thank you for sharing your story with us. :)

I loved this conversation. Plus, it sounds like my religious upbringing was similar to both of yours. Except by high school, I rebelled and refused to join any religious extra curricular activities. And then avoided them in college. I admire you guys having this conversation and being strong in your faith.

I knew somewhere in my heart that this was Rhett and Link's background with religion, community, etc because I have had a lot of the same experiences (at a completely different time in history, I will admit). And their behavior and conversations in all their Ear Biscuits, and sometimes GMM, have been little hints into this part of their past. It is really cool to hear it for the first time and recognize so much of it within myself. I am very excited to listen to more! #earbiscuits

I am loving this! As someone who has transitioned from an arguably more orthodox religious group, I am eating this up. I've developed something of a passion for hearing about people's faith transition stories, mostly from my own former faith, but also from other traditions. Don't rush this, guys. Faith transition stories are some of the longest form content on all of KZbin, and people listen to the whole thing.

I've been waiting for you guys to talk about this forever! Seriously though, as someone who grew up Evangelical and has myself traveled a very similar path, I very much appreciate how scary this is to put out there. You guys have a lot of wisdom, and the world is a better place because you've shared some of it with us. Thanks for continuing to make your lives about something bigger than yourselves! Looking forward to future episodes!

After almost 10 years of following GMM, Rhett and Link’s other content, and Ear Biscuits I can honestly say this series of podcasts is one of the BEST conversations I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. I relate to the experiences they had so much and I was hooked on every word they had to say. I’m glad they were so honest and shared exactly how they felt. There will always be people who disagree or make accusations about whether it was real or not. Rhett and Link - you guys keep doing what you’re doing!

My respect grew immensely for them as a result of this series of episodes (which I've sort of watched backwards for whatever reason). I don't mean to imply I didn't respect them before or that I respect them more now because of the particular conclusions they came to -- that's not what I'm saying at all. I mean that I'm impressed by the courage it takes to talk about these issues, to reveal such vulnerable aspects of their lives, and to do so despite the risk of discussing such divisive topics at such a polarizing time. I think it takes a level of respect-for and trust-in their viewers to be so open even though, as an entertainment 'brand,' that audience likely includes people from all perspectives.
