Remain calm people. I’ll keep this brief (as I can) First of all, your Jaguar or Land Rover hasn’t got a DEF quality detector. What this message really means is, there is a problem somewhere between your DEF tank, exhaust and ad blue injector. 1. Potential problem No 1. Have you recently just filled your AdBlue tank? Your tank has a capacity (XE capacity is 9l (163HP)/16l(180HP) if you over fill your tank you could potentially get this error message. FIX. Remove your rear left wheel and wheel lining to gain access to the bottom of your AdBlue tank. Find the drain hose and drain some out. After this you will need an OBD II meter to reset the message. This won’t fix the problem but should change the message to “Diese Exhaust Fluid Dosing Malfunction”. After this take the car for a short country road drive, get the engine nice and warm and plug in your OBD II meter again and clear any messages. A short drive later and a few cycles through engine on/off and ignition on/off and you problem should be solved. 👍🏻. 2. Potential problem No 2 Your AdBlue might just be old, if its been in the tank for a while it may have just gone bad. If this is the case I won’t burn away those nasties in your exhaust, which would cause the NOx sensor in your exhaust to detect high carbon emissions and display this message. FIX. Remove your rear left wheel and wheel lining to gain access to the bottom of your AdBlue tank. Find the drain hose and drain the AdBlue out. Pour a litre of new AdBlue in to the take and drain that out too, just to give it a nice wash. After this you will need an OBD II meter to reset the message. This won’t fix the problem but should change the message to “Diese Exhaust Fluid Dosing Malfunction”. After this take the car for a short country road drive, get the engine nice and warm and plug in your OBD II meter again and clean any messages. A short drive later and a few cycles through engine on/off and ignition on/off and you problem should be solved. 👍🏻. 3. Possible problem No 3. Your AdBlue gets injected into your exhaust via the AdBlue injector 😱. Have you ever noticed all the white crystallisation around your DEF cap? You could have the same white crap all over your AdBlue injector nozzle. To find out you’ll need a jack and an 8mm socket. Fix. Jack up your car at the front right wheel as high as you dare. Make sure to get an axle stand under there too, safety first. You’ll find your AdBlue injector clamped to the exhaust with just one jubilee style clip. Remove the clip, the AdBlue line and the electrical clip and your injector will come away without a fight. Wash the nozzle (if required) with warm water. I’ve found that a Lucozade sport bottle works well for this. 👍🏻. 4. Possible problem No 4. NOx sensors. NOx sensors (Or lambada sensors) don’t last forever unfortunately, they’re about £100 or so and from research last around 7 years or 65,000 miles. Which isn’t a lot!!! From research I’ve seen pictures of their electrical wires plastic sheathing eroded away from vibrating on your under tray. If this has happened and the wires are exposed, unfortunately you need a new one. FIX. Buy yourself a replacement and swap them like for like. 👍🏻. 5. Possible problem No 5. EGR valve. If you have all the tell tail signs of an EGR valve fault (ruff running idle, white smoke out the back, so on.) don’t worry you don’t need a new one, not just yet. It might just be backed up with carbon. FIX. You could pay a professional to do a deep carbon clean on your drive, and this would do your car the power of good. Or, if you’re brave enough you could remove you EGR valve and give it a good de carbon clean with an aerosol spray. Or you could just spray the same aerosol spray direct in to the air intake of your engine, this will eventually get to your EGR valve and clean it out. 👍🏻. In all of these cases, you’ve probably noticed that you’ll need an OBD II meter. In some cases you might even find that the problem on your car is non existent or no longer existent. But one the ECU gets a sniff of the issue, EU law says that these new Euro6 super eco engines have to remain eco friendly, FOREVER!!!! So the problem HAS to be fixed, weather it’s a simple fix or not. Either way, the FIX is with a cheap OBD II meter to clear the baddy message, then take the car for a “drive cycle” this should do it. 👍🏻

This is a common issue with the XE/XF Jags (I can't speak to other models) - Jag dealers will try to charge a small fortune to rectify (they want to replace sensors and all sorts) It's been seen that sometimes clearing the fault (after cleaning the injector) doesn't always reflect immediately in the ECU, in which case the car will tend to clear itself after some miles. Excellent video

Thank you for the video, it was really useful and provided good info. I had the "Incorrect Diesel fluid Quality Detected" error on my XF 2016 2.0D recently. I solved the issue by doing the following: 1) I topped up with 5L of Redex Adblue. I've had the car for just over 5k miles and did not top up until now and not sure when the previous owner had topped up. So, I figured 5L would be a safe amount (not risk causing an overfill) because I read somewhere that the car uses about 1L per 1000miles or even 500miles in some cases. 2) Then I checked for fault codes using an iCarsoft v2.0 device and some regarding the glow plugs circuit appeared but nothing about the DEF. I cleared all the fault codes anyway, which changed the error to "Diesel Exhaust Fluid Dosing Malfunction" with the mileage countdown still there. BTW I opted for buying the iCarsoft after doing some research as it's recommended as a really good and decent priced OBD2 scanner. 3) I took the car for a long motorway drive (about 30miles), driving 70mph on a lower gear to up the revs, then turned the car off and went shopping for a few hours, then did a few shorter trips whilst I was there including turning the car on and off a few times. I then drove the 30miles on the motorway back home and eventually the "dosing" error disappeared!!! My 'Diesel Exhaust Fluid Refill' indicator in the 'Next Service' screen is now showing 10,000miles. I believe the 5L top-up has solved the issue for me and hope that it doesn't return anytime soon! Hope this helps anyone if they get this issue and wants to try an Adblue top-up before trying to clean the DEF injector or drain and refill the DEF tank, as long as there is no risk of overfilling! Thanks 😀

Ah fantastic little video - Could I ask a question or 2 please? Did the repair last and what type of system might I need to turn off the countdown - You had a lovely looking bit of kit by Snap on which I expect cost gazillions, I have an OBD reader plus a reader from Carsoft which is supposed to be Jaguar specific.

Firstly thank you 🙏. I recorded this video around 1 year ago & the car is still fixed. Unfortunately I’m not familiar with the capabilities of the Carsoft reader & I don’t think the counter can be reset using an OBD tool. You can get scantools from Launch, Autel or Topdon for €1800 but this is quite expensive if not being used much. Most systems will reset after 20 or 30 miles once the issue is fixed 👍

I had this " incorrect diesel fluid" flashing up twice since January 2022 in a 2016 Jaguar XE. Ok, all sorted. Took off the add blue injector hoping it would be clogged but it wasn't bad at all. Cleaned it anyway. Then I drained the add blue tank. Thinking the float might be stuck in the tank, I actually took the tank out of the car to check. I shouldn't of bothered as there is no float like I thought. The float is electrical and is part of the pump assembly. Put the tank back in the car and refilled it. Then I just checked all the pipes and cable from the tank to the injector for damage but couldn't find any. Decided to leave it at that and start with the OBD2 scanner. Plugged in and got code P208B. This is generic code related to the add blue system. I done some different test on the scanner and got lots of Red X's relating to ECG, DEP ect ect. Then I just decided to erase all codes. Doing this put off my engine light and changed the message to Dowsing Malfunction, but the counter was still counting down. Scanned again and all codes were clear. Done that other test again but I still had all the Red X's. Now I decided to go for a drive as that is what the OBD manual suggested to do with the scanner still connected. As I drove nothing changed just the scanner beeping away. Once the engine temp got to normal 1 red X turned green,,,,, so I kept driving,,, then another and another untill I was left with one that wouldn't go green. Getting annoyed with it I decided to up the revs and sit at 70mph. I kept at this speed for about 5 mins then I was heading home,,,,, all of a sudden I got a green light and all messages and count down milage went off the dash. Delighted. Home I went. So what did I fix,,,,,,, I don't know. Did I just disturb something back into place. Did fiddling with the add blue system clear something blocked,,,,,,,, was it just a malfunction of the car computer,,,,,,,, I don't know. Anyway it is now fixed and I have no messages on the dash. One thing I did notice is that on both occasions when I had this fault come on,,,, I had recently changed the car from normal mode to eco mode. Don't know if it has anything to do with the problem. I was thinking maybe,,,,, as changing to eco mode changes the car settings like reduced power ect maybe the cars computer is quicker to pick up exhaust gases before the exhaust can actually deal with them and get rid of them,,,,,, by this time it is too late and the ECU has already set a fault code. Anyway car is sorted and I just wanted to say a very big Thank You. Maybe this will help others too.
