I first DM'd Sentinel/Gauntlet about the late 80's when I was about 13 or 14 and to this day my old friends who I used to RP with still talk about these adventures. As far as I can recall they teamed up with the gnolls when they saw the army marching on the keep. It also let me used the gnolls as cannon fodder to ramp up the threat to the PC's. After a few rounds the giant addressed the party and things got back on track! Great memories of a simpler time!

Just received my copies of both of these this weekend. I can’t wait to play them! I never played them in the 80’s, I am really looking forward to them!

Anyone who played the Defense of the Keep against the Fire Giant's forces, found themselves thinking of Mad Martigan defending the ruins of Teiris Lee in the Willow Movie! (or maybe even the space marines defending against the Aliens in Aliens 2) A too small group, running around, activated defenses against a massive force? It just resonates.

I really like your style and I seem to feel a boundless passion. The AD&D UK/U series are my favorite. Thanks for your nice review!

The gauntlet and the sentinel were fantastic modules, they made a really good overall story with a brilliant range of encounters and locations. Nice review. Thank you

The Gauntlet was the better adventure.

Correct - but it's fair to say that the Gauntlet compares favourably with most AD&D modules - especially those of the 1980s

They were, and they had almost as many things to kill as the Giant in this module!

Great review of this and the Sentinel before it. Ive been gearing up to run this dynamic duo in my upcoming new campaign ( which Im setting in and around Lake Splendlow in the Sea Princess area). Im looking at perhaps using When a Star Falls as the lead in for the adventure ( i have some idea that the falling star heralded the awakening of the Sentinel and Gauntlet further south). Im wondering what filler adventure you used between the Sentinel and Gauntlet to assist the party? Thanks

The only issue I see is that UK2 is much simpler than UK4... I favour UK2, UK4, UK3 in that order... the natural difficulty progression works that way.

When these two modules came out I always thought that it was more likely written as a single adventure in 3 acts but then they decided to break it up into two adventures and it didn't quite feel as complete that way. The Sentinel's two acts ending kind of poorly and The Gauntlet, while being action packed, was not much more than a single act long in some ways. I think it would have been better as a supermodule UK 2-3 in the same way that T1: Village of Hommlet was turned into T1-4: Temple of Elemental Evil or I3-5 were combined into Desert of Desolation. That aside, the module really did have a lot of fun elements to it: dealing with the gnolls and chasing down the Gauntlet were a challenge, but dealing with the fire giant and his friends was a serious armor-wetting moment. 😀I do agree that it needed another step in between the two. A party of 2nd and 3rd level characters could successfully complete The Sentinel, but even after leveling up they might be toast in The Gauntlet. We need a UK2.5 module. 😛And now I want to try to write it. 😀 Well done!

Another great review, it would have been interesting to hear what you thought could be done to flesh out the module and extend it a bit.
@yeoldegeek713 жыл бұрын
I never felt the need to extend it - yes, it's quite short, but it is savage and hectic, and very much quality over quantity.

@@yeoldegeek71 Ah ok I must have misunderstood a little, I thought you were saying it needed it. Great reviews though.
