Review and Dungeon Master tips for the classic AD&D module "All That Glitters." A very fun scenario with exotic landscapes, brutal combat, and great opportunities for role-play.

Funny story, I was 10 when I played this in 84. My group told me it was classic Gary (as in Gygax) and for years my brain insisted that the creator of D&D was Gary Glitters.

When he mentioned the fire giant lair I thought, "Is this module where Bonesaw was born?"

The bonesaw weapon cut of the head of a monster rising from lava. This lair doesn't like that.

@@anthonvanderneut it was a fire giant rising from the lava with an axe. Of course I'm sure Seth has had multiple fire Giants in multiple campaigns, but it made me think of it, being it's one of my favorite D&D stories ever.

I set this adventure into the World of Greyhawk with the transport system being built by the Suel and linking the Amedio Jungle to the Sea of Dust (under the Hellfurnances). It was part of a larger 'sandbox' campaign using a few other old 'canned' adventures like the Dwellers of the Forbidden City (which was part of the Suel empire and fell into decadence and then ruin after the core of the Suel empire was destroyed in the Rain of Colorless Fire).

@@starshiplazyboy475 It worked well for our group. Dwellers needs a bit of work to flesh out but it's a great evocative settling. The yuan-ti and their tasloi minions were fun for my PCs. I ran Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan but altered the poison gas set-up since it was for campaign play and not tournament. It's been years so I don't remember my exact premise but I move the albino suel Lerara tribe that was trapped under the mountains as a part of this adventure (basically and earthquake opened a chasm to a larger underdark network containing the ooze 'mother god' or whatnot). But figured that the colony was a part of the Slerotin's (sp?) family colonial holdings so it was a major route for suel refugees. The Lerara just didn't make it in time before the transport failed. Nowadays there are a lot of modern day adventures you can scavenge for maps and locations. Offhand, Dragon Magazine's first adventure path, the shackled city, has a city called Cauldron which is canonically set near the Forbidden City that could serve as a start area for pcs. Paizo also has a few decent 'start location settlements' with a jungle\colonial theme (some with snakemen & albino ape etc threats iirc) in the Mwangi Expanse area that might provide some other resources you can snag. I'm sure there is more besides. Happy Gaming!

Ya, i think there were quite a few modules that only saw publication in periodicals like Dragon. For example, from what i've read, it appears that R5: The Great Bugbear Hunt was distributed at a convention, and then published in Polyhedron magazine, but never saw distribution beyond that.

i ran this once recently on a return to dnd, a heavily house-ruled Conan with a custom setting has become our main fantasy rpg since mid 2019 (based on the setting of the novel i'm writing that i had just started at the time) so this was a real fun change, it all went to hell do to a combination of a lot of beer and bad dice rolls the dungeon even collapsed because a support was destroyed

I bought this module back in the day and ran it twice and it is pretty beat up at just shy of 40 years later. Well, I'm running it again and dang if I'm not cutting out the hand-out map into pieces rather than just leaving it as a half page. I don't have to do a thing to age them, they sport actual foxing and discoloration from age. Thanks, Seth.

When fighting those mummies, our druid threw a net of ensnarement on one of them, while my halfling thief took a couple vials on holy water from our cleric and dumped them both on it (I always though when you used holy water on desiccated undead that they'd bellow like when you pour water on an ashy campfire). Our cleric managed to turn one of them but the other two were tough (our fighter and druid both got that tomb rot). Oh how we hated the Hek (our DM told us later those lizard mounts would've killed us easy with a fire attack) and our party had the same reaction when we had to hand over the decanter. As we were leaving, our druid told their leader to "enjoy your new swamp".

I've got questions. What is the treasure at the end of the map? Is it the decanter? Why is the map so far away from the corpses of the previous expedition? Is there any motivation for characters who are not obsessed with chasing gold? Please excuse me for dropping these inquires under a four year old video. I actually am thinking about buying this one since Seth mentioned it as a favorite module in a more recent video. If "All That Glitters" is really just a series of better-than-average dungeon rooms connected by a treasure map, that's great, but I would need to use it very differently and at a different time in the home campaign.

I owned/own this, but I don't think I ever actually ran it. I started a campaign that initiated with the U series and then the PC's used the mansion, the ship and the (frankly ludicrous) amount of treasure from those three to explore/trade/adventure in the Amedio Jungle to the south. I placed a ton of jungle adventures in there and planned to include this one at some point but never managed to do so.

Ooh, I got a premise for an adventure I can pull out of my Gnomes & Halflings book for you... That's grossly assuming you don't have that book on-hand. In addition to little roleplay tidbits and class kits, the book has possible starting premises for different adventures, assuming all characters in the party are gnomes or halflings, but making note the DM should be flexible. For example, an all Halfling party could come from a town of the small folk and they were hired by the big folk to rescue their children whom were kidnapped by Kobolds, whom the Halflings are just small enough to get into their cave system. Another is a bunch of Gnomes going to investigate a mine in a mountain upon the arrival and death of a miner from said mine. Because back then Gnomes liked their shinies. XD

Hey seth have been watching some of this reviews of this old modules do you convert over to 5th edition when you run them or is from when they first came out im new to d&d ive only been playing for over a 1year now and I was thinking of running this old modules but through 5th edition it seems like it wouldn't be to hard to convert the monsters over like if you fought a skeleton id use the stats of 5th any thoughts?
@SSkorkowsky
@SSkorkowsky 5 жыл бұрын
Converting old modules is tricky. Some spells, items, and monsters have changed quite a lot over the years and some things are much more or much less powerful than they were in older editions, while some things might be completely different or might not exist in both editions. The only 1e module I converted to 5e was Secret of Bone Hill, and that was a lot of work because the gap between 1e and 5e is so broad. A straight stats conversion doesn't always work because an encounter that was challenging in 1e might be a breeze for 5e characters, so DMs might need to make other changes to keep the difficulty levels appropriate, such as increasing or decreasing the number of monsters in an encounter. I played this particular module twice but with 1e and 2e.
