The ADA microcab was the most amazing direct-to-tape product I ever tried, and I tried it all. When they came out they were only something like 115 bucks, and then the price went up. An MP-1 with the microcab could make recorded guitar sounds that compete with well-recorded amp/mic methods. I never heard anything else that had the thump.

I'll be honest, I've been pining for the MB-1 (bass version) ever since I heard Sleepytime Gorilla Museum live. Their bassist played a Stingray5 and one of those into a power amp and a couple 410 cabs and it was just the HUGEST bass sound. I've seen a lot of bands and a lot of bands with extreme bass, but to this day nothing kicked me in the chest like the low B on that rig. thing is, I have a great rig currently, but it's very different. and the price on an mb1 is not insignificant...

absolutely , i found the classic distortion channel to be kinda digital sounding more like an ada mp2. the classics "brown" channel was good though, but i still prefer original mp1. Best of all is 3Tube mod !

Also, this preamp was on a ton of recordings during the 80's like Vito Bratta of White Lion, Paul Gilbert of Mr. Big, Metallica, Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme, Snake from Skid Row, etc. I believe Michael Wagener loved to use this for guitars. With today's recording, one can send out a guitar signal to multiple preamps and blend them all later in mixing a lot easier than a room full of gear back in the day.

JamminMan77 Technically the original ADA MP-1 was, the MP-1 classic is not quite as special, pretty close, but doesn't have that "liquid" lead sound, or the amp-like rhythm, sounds like a line 6 model of the original.

Thank you very very much for the tutorial! Also, I did it... well, 3 years after you but I did it. I have ADA MP-1, Mesa Boogie Triaxis and another tube preamp/pedal that I love and I couldn't understand why everyone these days sells them to by a fully digital modelling system. I keep having them and when I want to record I send the preamplified signal to my DAW, I add modeled power amp (Ignite amps) and then IRs and it's perfect. Soon, I am going to do a comparison between them and fully digital systems. For those who want a more plug and play solution there is Mooer Radar, Nux Solid Studio, or the more expensive Two Notes products.

This thing popped into the world in 89 or 90 and every guitar rag had an ad for it. I do remember Jason Becker's ad "Tone for days, with my ADAs." I saw Alex Skolnick from Testament use it during a show in 1990 and it sounded OK. Never owned one myself as it was out of my price range.

Probably, there are quite a few examples of that. The 12ax7 is running, but in a low voltage way, mostly as a token gesture. Digitech have done it, Marshall’s Valvestate line was the exact same thing

I have an old Digi-tech GFX-1 Twin Tube. Always liked it and just replaced the battery and put in new tubes, I think Digi-tech came out with it after ADA came out with the MP-1. Never played through the MP-1, I'll have to check out E bay etc. for them. I have played through the old version of the "Rock-tron Voodu Valve" and it was very similar to my GFX-1. So many tube pre-amps so little time ;) P.S. I still like my Digitech RP-7 as well, got that dual delays effects and pre-amp tube as well.

forgetting the Rocktron and the other ART stuff, etc. Marshall also made the 9001, etc. I have an Ada Mp1 I just got back from the shop, got a new battery installed, but the weird thing is the amp out wont work, only the headphone out, THROUGH the power amp. No idea why its working this way but at least it works again lol. I also have a Mesa Studio, which is the one before they made the Quad. Many have said and this has been disputed by some, that it's the same (or close) to the preamp of the highly coveted Mark IIC+. Either way, it's very Mesa Mark sounding, and I use both with a Mesa 50/50. Also have a mosvalve thats having problems as a backup lol. I want a real marshall though...well one day. Btw, the cleans are to die for on the ADA. Pretty close to the awesomeness of the Mesa Studio. I also have a 5150 which, well, let's just say the cleans are less than heavenly (Well it doesnt have a clean channel lol)

A modern incarnation of the ADA rackmount tube preamp with midi in pedal form would be pretty cool but also have the preamp tubes easily accessible like on the Effectrode Blackbird would be great too. Combining it with the Two Notes Torpedo Cab or Line 6 HX Effects would give quite a bit of flexibility to run a line out to the effects return of a tube power amp or a stand-alone one like a Fryette Powerstation or Mesa Boogie Fifty Fifty or a solid state power amp like the Seymour Duncan PowerStage 170 or 700 or going to a FRFR active powered monitor wedge Laney IRT-X, ISP Technologies Vector FS8, Friedman ASM-12 or Atomic Amps CLR Neo MKII

I appreciate him sharing the MP-1 Classic, it is good, but the real "magic" is in the original ADA MP-1, I have owned several MP-1's and MP-1 Classics, they are not the same. The MP-1 sounds organic and lively, like an amp, the classic sounds like a digital model of the MP-1, cold and sterile. Of course the Rockmaster beats them all but I still use my MP-1 all the time.

Haha I have 3 MP-1's and 2 Rockmasters. My MP-1's are a bog standard, no mods, a modded version with noise mod and MDRT transformer (totally adds more steroids to the original) and then the 3TM which is then like having another layer of tube breakup in the circuit for super tight and heavy gain. You know what I use the most? The Rockmaster live and the Rockmaster in the studio. I do fight with it's EQ sometime though and have looked into modding them for more bottom end. Not sure if I've achieved that but I still love them. Just wished they had more bottom end. Live it's not an issue but in studio it can be. However when it come to sticking something in a mix it's like it has the right amount of low end taken out of it and you don't need to hi pass it!!

Wrong. The MP1 was voiced to replicate a whole amp head, that's why it works great with solid state power amps, and tube power amps can get kinda boomy. Remember the BBE sonic maximizer...it's useless without it. You would also need an eq in front, like the Furman PQ3. The ADA eats any digital garbage can for dinner thou... Wrong 2. The recording out sounds beautiful, you better dial in on your board, dude...

Nice, just a word. "I actually had to repair this....(or whatever you stated exactly) ...something was wrong, id turn it on and it would lose all of its presets...and all it was you know was just desoldering the battery..." Yikes man, please don't take this as a bitch slap or me being harsh on purpose. But you've got a lot of equipment behind you and you're giving a lot of technical advice about impulses and such and such that I happen to know about and a lot of other people do as well. Some people will know nothing but I will tell you this a lot will know that brother, when you buy an older piece of gear those batteries can sometimes last five years 10 years and if you're lucky some of them go surprising lengths.. 20 years! But man, lol, it's not a waste of money. There are people spending money for pedals that much or twice, a fucking pedal!....and this is not necessarily a "tube" preamp. It has two tubes in the circuitry. We are not running a 300 V rail here, with output transformers and shit. What makes so much of what people use for their sound ... hey! just popped in my mind, Ty Tabor... there's an example that shows you what you were really trying to say. But to finish what I was saying before so many things that go into distortion are the solid-state circuitry of finessing the gain to go from when you put that cord in the device, to the end result, brother, there are a lot of subtleties! And some solid state stuff sounds amazing! And some tubes stuff sounds amazing and some solid-state sounds like absolute garbage and some tube stuff sounds like garbage. This is not really a tube amp. Most of what you're hearing has to do with loading and ambulation of loading on your way out like when you mention the outputs but really 90% of it is in the circuitry I mean look at the inside of that box! Now you have a ton of electrolytic converters in there that are old like the dude from tales from the crypt. Going through the ones in the audio path, changing them it will sound like a different box. That said the tubes are doing a part, but not as much as you would think. The main thing that you acquaint to this box is all in the solid-state circuitry and then some warmth and maybe a little bit of a step up is happening in those tubes and those tubes are mainly to warm the non-distortion sound. But back to the battery thing, to be honest, one should know especially with all of that equipment behind you, and again please don't take me as an ass, turning a unit on and off and losing presets I mean come on that is to be expected on any older piece of gear. That doesn't mean something is wrong with the unit as you said or this needed repair, you have to assume as soon as you look at a piece of gear like that, before you purchase it the first thing that come in your mind should be...battery! Why? Because if that battery leaks because it's fucked and old, which it is, but in a particularly shitty way, so many of these machines from that time that didn't use flash, synthesizers everything, you will see batteries that have leaked especially the ones beginning with a V from Europe, all over your circuit board and that is a fucking problem! That is a repair! Maybe! Depending on how creative you are and the design of the piece. So many devices are throw out because of this. So whenever you purchase something this old always turn it on, turn it off and see as you're buying it, if it loses patches. Either way open it up put your eye right wherever a battery should be, or just look for one! Become acquainted with what you're purchasing inside and out before you go. Replace the battery immediately. Replace the tubes immediately! Do you know how many absolute morons icy looking at boogie amp's or preamps and they are like oh it sounds weird and I see that they pull out of it eventually and they are like tubes that haven't been made in 30 fucking years! ITS A WARE ITEM!!! Lol. If you want to know what this piece sounds like you have to throw at least some new piece of shit working tubes in it you know and I mean like sovtek would be garbage. If you want to know what it sounds like well, spend $13-$16 on two tubes in this case ...I have a funny feeling that those tubes probably were not changed?, Man they wear out especially in a real tube amp which this is not, running really high gain and high-voltage and high current. You know if you don't like it well put the two new 12 aX7's back in their boxes and save them for later and that's it. Spent some money on to good JJ's or Tung Sol are nice at this point in time. The Boogie pres can have 5-7 lets say 12ax7s that are all original which boggles my mind you know and they are 30 years old or 20 years old, and they are running very high voltages and gain. Even more disturbing and very very common, (I am tech for some serious people and situations as well as being a musician) you will be shocked at how many people have no idea what the fuck they're doing because they are guitarists and not in the know it all about anything technical, and they go to their local guitar dildo, and they purchase the wrong tubes or sold whatever they had and told that they can be a substitute. And can go from something totally common like the boogie which has all 12 series tubes in it, that look alike and they all say 12 a something, and you will see a 12ax7 in the reverb gain section. Nine out of 10 times. It requires a 12at7. It's lower gain and somethings going to happen when you put the other in, and you can completely fuck up the transformer for the reverb. Long story short change the tubes check the tubes have a pair or I don't know 4 to 5 if you're around something with testicles like a Boogie etc. In summation :-) lol, always expect to change a battery in any piece of gear 5 to 10 years old. And you should change the battery and you should check first just in case one has blown up and leaked shit, caused permanent damage to the unit. You can also tell a lot when you look inside sometimes you will see why people are selling things, things won't look right especially if you have a gut or you've taken a look online in one before and you see a bunch of weird shit wires moving from place to place which are corrections or modifications for fuck ups, or modifications that are fuck ups lol. Member a lot of times probably over half, let's say the normal distribution 68% of the time people get rid of things are because they have issues or they were too daft to do maintenance and don't like the sound anymore and think it's just broken, or that they have outgrown it. To give that unit a fair chance it should be working and it should have brand-new tubes, cleaned sockets as well. Word of advice to all of you, get some basic book in basics of text stuff and learn it and become acquainted. Nothing too complicated. Learn how to clean potentiometers, so many times these older units, you must check all of the pushbuttons and the potentiometers before purchase. Almost every amplifier I buy and we buy good! Fender Marshall whatever, they have at least a third of the potentiometers are bad not reparable but bad! Passengers they have a 2000 hour working life at best. Can they work past that? sure. But if they're in the audio path assume that that is just some sort of low pass filter or some other type of filter and man if that shit isn't working right which it most probably is not, cheap cabs are often used in average equipment, it's like putting a low pass filter your guitar output signal! Put a blanket over your amplifier LOL! And remember..."... this item actually needed repair, it had some problems with it, we noticed that it was losing its patches when we turned it off and it turned out to be a battery..." Man a lot of people that read these channels and listen, have that basic knowledge and as soon as they hear someone say something like that that's telling them and testing equipment and mentioning things like impulse and stuff, which is quite a complex, and completely different technical concept, soon as someone hears you say that at the end of the video they are going to be like oh my God, ...this guy probably didn't even change the tubes if he doesn't know that, and this guy doesn't realize that so much of the sound of a how do we say "mid fi" or even high-quality, "not real tube" gear, completely depends on the chips and all of that solid-state shit in there. You can run some of these pieces without the tubes in and they sound the same,, they will only sound different in the clean channel. The solid-state path matter so much, that companies like MXR and many other companies that make thousand dollar solid-state distortion pieces will use a "can type" older version or different company of an op amp as opposed to the "dip type", just because it makes such a dramatic difference, adding a tube at at most 110 V rail, just for some "warming" and soft saturation like an ART piece. Boogies use extremely high voltage rails yes 300 V or more sometimes DC which is death to the tech lol, and four 12aX7's, to create real tube hard distortion with a matched audio transformer. I subscribed to your channel and I hope you don't take this as an insult but I am a grumpy older experienced guy with many more people more experience than I, but as I said I subscribe to because I like your style and what you're trying to do and I hope this helps you to grow and get more followers. And I wish in the olden days, more of the basics were passed on to me that we had to find out on our own the hard way, everything was kept a secret. Nowadays, are no secrets. Cheers, lovely channel :)

Gear is good. It keeps experts out there that know how to fix them. Computers are shit. Don't fall for it. Maybe tracking, But not everything

Author needs to get a hold of an Original MP-1, then a Peavey Tubefex to test. To me the Tubefex WAS the best preamp ever made, followed close by the MP-1, the classic feels and sounds "rigid" by comparison.

axe fx and kemper has replaced them all now, all going to the front of house.

Well, the MP-1 must be the most requested model for the Axe FX, but there is no indications of it coming yet. But by all means, if you have an ADA to sell, I'll take it of your hand and spare you the trouble of throwing it out. ;-)

Hmm...Bought mine for about 50 $ two years ago. The seller thought it was broken because when powered on, it only show a strange code (do not remember what exactly). I just did a reset after reading online and all the factory preset came back...but the code came back as soon that I powered it down... So change the battery (a battery holder was added because the battery was soldered directly on board) and everything's all right now... I still see some working unit selling for less than 150$-200$ on kijiji, craigslist, ebay, reverb (mine was on Reverb). I think it worth every penny ;)
