IMF NEGOTIATION TO BEGIN IN TWO WEEKS | CHATHURANGA ABEYSINGHE | AT HYDEPARK WITH INDEEWARI AMUWATTE

With the 9th Executive President of Sri Lanka Anura Kumara Dissanayake assuming office, ‘At HydePark with Indeewari Amuwatte' featured National Executive Committee Member of the National People's Power, Chathuranga Abeysinghe, to discuss the way forward of the new administration and pressing issues facing Sri Lanka's economy, particularly regarding tax policy and national security.
Abeysinghe highlighted the significant impact of proposed reductions in value-added tax, particularly the exemption for essential items, which could lead to an annual loss of about Rs. 55-60 billion in tax income.
However, this initiative aims to stimulate consumption and support businesses, reflecting a broader strategy to recover approximately 120 billion rupees annually through various measures, including addressing leakages in customs and excise.
Despite these challenges, he emphasized that ongoing negotiations with the IMF will start in two weeks, focusing on finding ways to balance tax benefits with the need for increased public revenue.
The discussion also addressed the importance of restructuring state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in line with IMF recommendations.
Furthermore, Abeysinghe reaffirmed the commitment to a balanced foreign policy that engages with multiple nations, including India and China, to safeguard Sri Lanka’s sovereignty while attracting strategic investments.

For an effective tax system, two things need to happen. One is the assurance to the tax payers that your tax money is spent wisely, not looted or used for corrupt practices. Next is the guarantee that everyone is paying their fair share of tax and noone is escaping from tax net. For this to happen, technology must be used

I'm afraid that politicians of the past in Sri Lanka felt safe maintaining a relationship with China against Indian hegemony. They consider the Indian origin Tamils, their Investments and Indian investment would pave the way for Indian hegemony over Sri Lanka. This is the similar trend with Ukraine, Taiwan, Palestine and other independent countries that are in close proximity to larger nations.

When it comes to fighting corruption we shouldn't forget that Educating man in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace in society Theodore Roosevelt Socialism can educate everyone but these days moral values come down from family values. Moral values have to be taught in schools or else with demand and supply taking its toll on rule of law and to become rich and rise in social status overnight we will be educating doctors who will steal organs, engineers who will construct buildings with cheap material that'll collapse over time, lawyers who will fleece the laymen, people in power ripping the government coffers.

As a trade union leader he can fight not only for the welfare of the labourers but also for their families and extended families. As a CEO of the organization you to worry of how you can earn profits to pay for the shareholders and banks who have taken the risk to invest in the organization, earn for the remuneration human resources and labour. Now as the labour leader who has fought for the welfare of the families and extended families of the labour, you as a CEO face an extra burden of earning for them too.
