To download an mp3 file of the accompaniment, go to www.steveparkhornmusic.net. This is one of the most challenging works written for horn. The first movement requires an octave slur to a high "C" as well as a low "A" in the bass cleff. There is very little rest and it takes a lot of "chops". Having said that, it is a very fun piece to play!!! Subscribe! I will be adding more solos on a regular basis. I teach horn at a University and my goal is to create a video library of some of the best horn solos for my students and others. Also let me know if there is something you would like me to record.

My son, age 19, decided to tackle this for his senior high S&E, and next week he plays. Thanks for providing such a wonderful recording for him to listen to.

Wow, this is my favorite recording of yours. Absolutely stellar tone throughout - I'm loving the characteristics of the Rico Kuhn. Bravo!

I just got a Ricco Kuhn horn on Feb. 8th. It was expensive but I love the sound and the way it plays. I'm still using the Lawson mouthpiece

Love how you just appear out of the clouds, then disappear there. This explains to me why your horn playing is so heavenly.

That was one of the most flawless high C's I've heard! Thank your for your videos, and I'd like to hear your version of the Gliere Horn Concerto Cadenza to Movement 1 (or the whole concerto would be nice if that's not asking too much). Again you're the bomb. Moonmatt2!

Stunning! The contrast in tone between this and your 8D is dramatic. I especially love the glowing clarity in the upper register in this horn. Beautiful job. Now I want to hear all your other pieces played on this horn! HA HA HA!

Wonderful reading of the A&A. The tone is consistent throughout, with a slight edge, but very smooth. This is how I was taught to play as a kid. These early works should be smooth, without huge triple forte blasts, I think.

I am impressed with your valving. It has helped me bunches, the most simple combos, you make it look easy, like your playing the piano, this tune rocks! and I get looks when I play it as a warm up, nice stuff.

This is absolutely my favorite. I've probably listened to it 10 times! Melts me every darn time! You know what I'd enjoy hearing? A simple duet between your 8D and your Ricco Kuhn. I'd like to see how "blendable" they are or aren't! A good contrast would be the Ricco on first with the Conn on 2nd, then switch parts.

Thank you Steve, finally horn sound; remember what I said you need a European style horn; tone is warm, velvet and even throughout highs are phenomenal. Now, make a Mozart Romance (Largetto) with the new horn we want to see the difference.

@killordie33 Almost everyone has the ability to play like this... but most don't have the determination and motivation to get there. Keep practicing and working hard and you'll get there eventually. This is a beautiful piece. Nice playing ohsteacher.

An 8D with an Laskey 85E! I bow down to you, for you are one horn stud to play on that combination. I use a Laskey 85G on my series C 8D: I have an 85E that sounds good on my small belled Bb Paxman, but I'm not man enough yet to use it on the 8D. The 8D puts out a beautiful tone, but one needs to know how to play it to get that wonderful, near perfect tone; hand position is critical. I personally prefer less hand than what Steve used with his 8D.

I did a couple of these recordings using a Laskey 70E. I can't imagine playing on a 85. I would fall in and get lost. The only type of mouthpiece that works for me is one with a small inside diameter. It can have a deep cup and a large bore, but it has to have a small inside diameter.

The new horn!!! is a Rico Kuhn. It's not as much work to play high or loud as the 8D and I like the sound. It was expensive though!!!

Yeah, I play on an 8D, with a Laskey 85E that has been bored out. Anything above F is walking a tightrope. I can play low notes though that I could never play before.

I had to prqctically put a trombone mouthpiece on the horn to get low end. The 85E is tough up high, but when I switch back to the Giardinelli C6, it feels very small.

Hi Steve. Once again you make it look almost effortless. I was noticing you position the mouthpiece off to the left of centre on your lips. Is this something you recommend? OR is it just something you found works for you?

Was curious what horn you are playing on now? Some sort of Knopf wrap? Looked like you are playing an 8D in the other videos with a lawson mouthpiece? My current set up is an M series 8D with a lawson. Great playing by the way! I would love to get some of those accompaniment tracks!

Off center works for me. My lips are very soft in the center. If I play there I get this foggy sound and I can't get above a G at the top of the staff. If this sounds like any of you, you might want to experiment.

I can certainly hear the difference in sound between this and your old 8d. How common are non US horns amongst american players?

Yeah, the tone is different from your 8D, more brilliant, lows are a bit buzzy, not that "velvet fog" anymore. Sounds more efficient. I know what you mean about the high notes on the 8D-- for me, above high G is like skating on ice. Thanks so much for your contributions on KZbin.

I see that you're using a strap, as do I. But the purpose of me getting a strap was to take the weight of the horn off of my pinky. I have small hands, and I'm about to jump into the college world of horn, do you have any suggestions of what I could purchase to make my life easier?
@ohsteacher
@ohsteacher 9 жыл бұрын
ThatHornGirl Dewey I am not sure what you are asking. You said that you are already using a hand strap. I use mine as well to take the weight off of my pinky. Did you have a question about something else?
@thathorngirldewey8996
@thathorngirldewey8996 9 жыл бұрын
Steve Park I see where the question got confusing, and I apologize. The hand strap doesn't really work for me. Like, my hand slides in it no matter how tight the strap is to my hand. And obviously, the tighter the strap the less mobility I have in my fingers. I just don't know what else to do. My hand has to stretch alot to reach this pinky holder.
@ohsteacher
@ohsteacher 9 жыл бұрын
ThatHornGirl Dewey There are several different straps available. What are you useing now? I use a Clebschstrap. You can search it on Google. You have a repair guy take the pinky hook off and you replace it with the strap. It can be installed so that regardless of your hand size, it will work well.

Many professional hornists play off-center. Not a problem. They don't try to do this intentionally; their embouchures just settle there.
