To download an mp3 file of the accompaniment, go to www.steveparkhornmusic.net. This is a really great recital piece. Subscribe! I will be adding more solos on a regular basis. I teach horn at a University and my goal is to create a video library of some of the best horn solos for my students and others. Also let me know if there is something you would like me to record. If you would like an mp3 file of the accompaniment, send me your email address and I will send you the file.

To go from the stopped G to the open A you play the stopped G thumb plus 1st & 2nd valves. ( F# fingering on Bb side) Then just swing your hand open and it goes right to the A.

Note the fingering change when he plays stopped, ie you transpose down a semi-tone in most cases when fully stopped. You shouldn't rest so much weight on the right hand that you can't stop when standing up - if you struggle with the normal little finger hook then you can use a pad that you push up with the top of your left hand, or indeed a hand strap like Steve.

As good as your interpretation is, I'm using your recording as a baseline for how the accompaniment should go as well. It's taken me almost a month to solidify the accompaniment. She performs in 2 days and it's getting exciting! I'll report back here with how she does.

@MelloSymantha Different ebouchre can result in different tones, also the french horn is possibly the greatest instrument when it comes to alternate fingerings. Even more so when it's stopped, because you can bend the pitch up or down.

It's called "stopped horn". You do it by sealing the opening of the bell with your hand. You need to find someone to show you. It's hard to explain. You also have to use alternate fingerings. Send me a message if you want more details.
@FVmike
@FVmike 15 жыл бұрын
Yea, its a G stopped, meshed into an unstopped A. try the fingering T0, then ust move your hand out of the way. if you use air to accent the note just as you are moving your hand, it should produce the blend quite nicely.

This works, however I've found that the best way to get low notes down is to practice all of your major scales in that octave. Take the time to do them right and nail every note. After that stop and try to play the note by itself. If you don't get the note, practice more. After you get the note, add the note after it and play that until you have those two notes down. Afterwards, add the next note or two.

Probably the same reason that people who aren't into turbocharged engines don't off hand know what an automatic compensating wastegate is on a turbocharged airplane. Why would the general public know such a thing? Why would the general public know what the heck a "stopped horn" is, when many don't know a french horn from a cornet. You get the idea ;)
