Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell´s Royal Studios boasts a unique legacy in the music industry. Boo Mitchell’s late father, Willie Mitchell, helped found Royal Studios - one of the oldest recording studios in the USA still open for business - in 1957. The studio was housed in an old cinema, the Royal, which gave the new facility its name.
Willie Mitchell then helped push Memphis to worldwide fame as a metropolis of soul music. A successful producer and engineer as well as an accomplished musician, he worked with greats such as Al Green, Ann Peebles and George Jackson. Royal Studios was also the home of the Hi Rhythm Section, one of the era’s most successful backing groups.
We met with Boo just after the 60th anniversary party of the studios in December 2017.
