@@graystone2802 I think it was more about chalk dust getting in the air and being easy to inhale from holds a lot of people would be using, hence why the gyms closed, and for the hiking side the extra stress on emergency services making mountain rescue far more difficult. I get that it may feel like overreacting but the decision came in place before the extent of this was fully understood so I'll stick to it until otherwise informed, as everybody I know here is doing

A lot of people might be really put off by Adams “tantrums” as you might call them, but for me it’s the opposite, it does 2 things precisely, 1- it makes Adam more human, for some people (like me) it can be easy to fall into the misconception that he is a living god, an untouchable legend, and while he does share many qualities with those things, he is only just a human. Everyone fails and gets upset when they do and if they say otherwise they are lying, Adam could have easily edited out that anger and “fit” he had but he left it in to show us it’s ok to fail no matter what level you are at. And 2- It shows us how damn passionate and committed Adam is to climbing, it’s not a “classic legendary benchmark boulder”, it’s a little known boulder only a few months old, only a few people care or know that he did it, but Adam still shows the same level of focus and determination as he does on say Silence or the Dawn wall. He gives climbing his 100% every single try on everything he climbs, he gives climbing his all and in turn he is rewarded for in the send. He is so passionate about his climbing it is like he was born to do nothing else but climb, and he is still like a child in a candy store when he finds and test the boulder, and like a child without his candy when he falls, (in a good way) could you picture TC or Alex Honnold flipping out like this? No, that’s because they are not as committed to pure rock climbing as Adam Ondra is, that’s why he climbed 9c and the others couldn’t, TC and Alex don’t give their all to sport climbing, they do trad, crack, big wall, alpinism , and lots of adventures not necessarily involving climbing, and that’s why Adam is the worlds best sport climber and will continue to be until someone repeats and then establishes a route harder than Silence, it like repeating silence is simply passing the second place runner in a race, you are not first, you are still second, if you pass the first place ie: establishing 9c+ then you will be the best.
@Gleepglurp4 жыл бұрын
i agree with much of what you have said but i don't think someone has to put up a 9c+ to be considered better than Ondra in the future. hypothetically what if someone has just as many 9a and harder routes as Ondra but completes Silence in a handful of sessions. I can't remember exactly how long it took adam to complete silence but if someone can finish it significantly quicker than him while having a similar resume it puts them in the conversation as better than him.

You make it seem like childish temper tantrums are a prerequisite for being the best and/or most dedicated. I'd like to introduce you to a guy named Roger Federer. The greatest ever. Absolutely legendary work ethic and dedication. No screaming, no stomping his feet like an angry toddler. If you look around to other greats in sport, there's no pattern of tantrum behavior. And no one questions the other greats' commitment or dedication when there's a lack of temper tantrums. Adam climbs like a total champion, but the temper tantrums are just a lack of self awareness or control over himself. They don't help.

@@iclimbhard510 Look, I love climbing. When there's not a pandemic, I climb 2-3 times a week and go climbing outdoor as often as possible. I was also a college tennis player. I know these sports well, and I can assure that there's nothing special about climbing as far as practice, training, passion, dedication, and performance go. All of the same principles apply. If you can't see that, then I'd argue you don't know sports very well.
