One could eat a hotdog one day, pepperoni pizza the next, then absentmindedly have some bacon with breakfast the next day or a bacon cheeseburger. Now that I'm looking through my own diet, I'm realizing that I'm eating this processed meat, way more often than I thought.

We actually looked at the bacon causes cancer thing in my stats class. It is super misleading. It may increase cancer risk in a statistically significant way, but the effect size is nothing. It’s like going from a .01 risk to 0.012 (not actual numbers, but an example). Misleading stats can scare people, and that’s not cool.

@@Riley-te3mk no it started literally post-war. Though I will say that blacks and others ate it pre war it was cheap and most people didn't want it. The only other people that can ate it, were Farmers thoygh it is more of a treat to them but as far as people in the city going to go to the grocery store no bacon was considered trash pre war. People don't realize that the Vegan lifestyle is a developed world lifestyle Where in the United States do bananas grow???? pineapples??? coffee???? quinoa??? coconuts??? and many many other Vegan staples, that means they have to be transported here somehow most likely with fossil fuels and even plants that do grow here if the majority of people were vegan you realize how much demand for such products would skyrocket increasing it's price and reducing availability I'm not even sure if they know how much you have eat on a vegan diet most plants are naturally low in calories They talk about how much water and other resources livestock uses, yeah they use a lot but when you find a plant that has as many calories as meat does per pound you let me know
@manchee3
@manchee3 5 жыл бұрын
@@theprfesssor Just so you plants are much energy efficient than animals inherently as you feed plants to animals. Those animals then use the energy from the plants to grow so the VAST majority of the energy goes into the cow growing. While you are right that meat is more caloric per kg it is still far less energy efficient overall

I found it quite misleading that it was said that bacon causes cancer at one point in the video. Later on, you do clarify that you meant that bacon increases risk of cancer but this is not the same as cause as you previously said. I think this is misleading- the difference between risk and cause isn’t obvious

You could say standing in radiation causes cancer. There's a 57 percent chance if you stand in certain levels of radiation every day. This is the same. Something being able to cause something is just cause. Even if it's only a percentage

Still, the smell of fresh bacon cooking is amazing. One of my oldest memories is me waking up on a sunday and walking into the kitchen to the smile of my parents and the smell and sound of bacon cooking and fresh made pancakes... (not store-bought pancake mix, but fresh made from scratch) And I don't even live in the USA, I live in Mexico City! Sure, eating bacon daily wouldn't be good, but indulging occasionally I think it's worth the risk.

You have a thing is is I enjoy cooking from scratch too I really do but four years it's Ruth me nuts that everyone seems like they go out of their way to talk about how they cooked this or that from scratch and it's not a box mix.... The funny thing is is even if it is a box mix who really cares it's not really any different all they did was put the flower in the box for you and then tell you how much to use whereas the person that came up with your homemade recipe told you that you're going to need this amount of flour and other ingredients and you got to put it together yourself but the recipe is roughly the same I mean it is a pancake at the end of the day after all why is everyone wasting all this time putting a extra special emphasis on how they didn't buy a box of mix does everyone think that it gives them more skills or that it makes them look more skillful in the kitchen?? I mean I could totally follow what Aunt Jemima has to say on her recipe just as much as I could follow what my grandmother's recipe says ones just a little more convenient than the other cuz I don't know it's got the flower right there in the box!! of course I always figured this if you can't make homemade biscuits if you can't make homemade pancakes then you really are a moron on the other hand I've often thought that if you can't follow a recipe then you're a moron because they're telling you exactly what to do no matter if it's great grandma whoever that wrote it or it's on the box there's really no difference!!

A bit of an over-exaggeration on the "bacon causes cancer" bit. Any item we consume is poisonous at the right dose, even stuff that is healthy for you (he stated this when talking about toxins), the item found in Bacon that is most commonly thought of to cause cancer is the Nitrates used in the curing process, the same process nitrates does to cure the bacon also makes free-radicals that can damage DNA, but the fact is you would have to be eating a lot of the stuff to cause any issue, (the U.S did this for the army to try and decrease male labeto). As an apprentice funeral director, I have more of a risk for cancer from my job than from eating a baconator on occasion, heck pouring gasolene can cause cancer, that's why its called a risk and not a guaranteed outcome. The fat in bacon is gonna cause more harm in the sense of acid reflux than the nitrates are, as long as your arent living off bacon all day every day you aren't gonna see any real negative effects. But don't take my word, I am not a scientist on the subject, I am just giving my opinion. Just fact check both sides of the argument before forming a conclusion.

Quite the opposite, it's all about what you eat. I lost 20 kilos because I didn't eat any carbs, and in that time I was stuffing my face with pork, eggs and lots and lots of butter. It's of course possible to lose weight by going calorie-negative even if you eat absolute garbage like sugar and wheat, but I wouldn't recommend it. There are really nasty side-effects and you'll likely regain weight very quickly unless you carefully start monitoring calories. It's better to just ignore calories entirely and simply eat things that don't make you fat. No sugar, no wheat and no corn is a really good start.

“Even if you eat just 50 grams of processed meat per day, some estimates show your risk of colorectal cancer increases by nearly 20%!” Really, Adam? I normally like your show, but don't you think this is kind of disingenuous, ESPECIALLY after you did that segment on how being 40 or above may double the chance of birth defects, but only from 0.5% to 1%? In the _very article you cite_ (www.theguardian.com/news/2018/mar/01/bacon-cancer-processed-meats-nitrates-nitrites-sausages), it says that eating processed meat every day can increase your chances of getting bowel cancer by 20%… but you already only had an average chance of about 5%. Meaning you'd have to eat processed meat *every day* for *decades* just to up it to a whopping 6%. And yeah, that's a big change in the aggregate, but it's still _really_ small on a personal basis, barely worth mentioning. Bacon is bad for you, sure. But let's not exaggerate and scare-monger like you so often accuse _everyone else_ of doing.
