Your dedication is amazing. I love the incorporation of physics and tests that apply to our real life setting. With abuse tests, we only know the limit of what the coating can handle from a single hit but with yours, we can see how long it could last through normal washes! I love this. Many of us try multiple different pro grade coatings throughout our life. We go through the trouble of removing, reapplying and so forth. Honestly, this gives us a better point of view. @@DmitrysGarage Ended up being a great video overall and I did subscribe, but I was a little disappointed with the gloss testing section. I REALLY appreciate you even have this, but when the coating performed worse than just the polished panel, you went on to describe the coating potentially increasing the gloss of a more weathered/oxidized panel. Would have liked some sort of proof to back up this claim, as it seemed a bit like a cover for the coating not performing as well as one might expect. I'll definitely have to watch more of your videos and see what other coatings have scored.
@DmitrysGarage2 жыл бұрын
Kris, glad to have your viewership :). I think doing a test on a weathered panel to test the hypothesis may be a great idea. Maybe thats a future video. The gloss scoring has always been a contentious test. There are several things going on; first the definition of gloss is all over the map in common parlance. Sometimes people think I’m measuring how pretty and glossy it looks visually. While its really just a measure of how much light is reflected. The second thing is like you saw in the video, the panel is polished to about the same level as highly polished paint. This means that its very hard to make it look glossier. Lastly virtually all products have this problem. Its just hard to smear something on a thing thats very shiny and make it stay shiny or make it shinier. Ill see what kind of test we can rig up, but ultimately in this test we’re mostly looking to see that it doesn’t reduce gloss/light reflection much.

Well done! I liked the explanation of 10H hardness value. I have a black-painted car, and the surface shows the slightest swirl easily when viewed at an angle in direct sunlight. To me, the hydrophobic quality is quite appealing. I am guessing the hardness of the coating is not a match for dust particles which would be mostly sand (silica). So, the hydrophobic quality would allow me to minimize even light scrubbing during washing the car at home, and get the soap to remove the dirt through 'beading off' during rinsing. This would minimize swirl marks. Am I right?
@DmitrysGarage2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Im glad you liked my video :). Black cars are hard to maintain, but can be very beautiful. Hydrophobicity and slickness are both key to avoiding swirls from a product perspective. Hydrophobicity helps keep the surface clean and slickness of the product helps lubricate while you wash. Of course good washing technique is key as well!

@DmitrysGarage Жыл бұрын
I think as long as you apply it in the garage you should be fine. I would give it a good wash and decontamination, then if you're going to do paint correction do that indoors if you can or at least do a final wipe up with something like Adam's Detail Spray or another detailer that doesn't add any protection so the surface is clean of any pollen, water spots, etc...

Really appreciate the info on the hardness scale as it pertains to these coatings. I’m not old, but I’m old school as it pertains to paint protection. I’ve tried various ceramic-infused toppers, but still not any coatings. Down the road, I’d appreciate your perspective on modern products compared to the better waxes that we know won’t last nearly as long. As a part-time detailer, I’m quite conflicted with the idea of promising anyone ‘success for years.’ It’s not intended to be out of ignorance, but of concern. Thanks for all your efforts on this video!
@DmitrysGarage3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Justin! Yea its always a challenge to really promise multi-year. Nothing ever lasts quite as long as the marketing in my real world experience. People play musical cars a lot so my guess is the better coatings outlast the ownership. I would believe this coating to last multiple years in most conditions, but 7 is a big number. One challenge too is how customers wash their cars, if they send it through the swirl installing automatic wash of mayhem twice a week it will probably come off fast. I do test all kinds of products and the video description has a link to the prior tests. I have tested out some older and more traditional products and continue to do so. If there is something you’re curious about I can ad it to the list :)

@DmitrysGarage2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and I appreciate your kind words. I personally do not use toppers/boosters as I want the core product to do the work. Mainly I feel that if I have to top/boost then I may as well just skip the coating and use a silica spray every X months. A real high quality quality coating should be able to handle longevity on its own.
@NewtonNuggets2 жыл бұрын
@@DmitrysGarage then what would you do after getting the Adam's coating done to maintain it for a longer time? do you just re do it after few years?
@DmitrysGarage2 жыл бұрын
@@NewtonNuggets You would wash it with pH neutral products by hand so that it doesn't get prematurely abraded, which is a good practice anyway if you don't want scratches. A good coating should last without you having to constantly apply something on top and then you just re-do it in a few years. Chances are after a few years you'll have a few scratches and spots you want to paint correct anyway which is why the premise of say a 9 year coating is kind of silly. They know you'll either sell the car or paint correct it and re-coat before that sort of time runs out.

I can only imagine how many washes this would tolerate if you were using the shampoo that is meant for the ceramic coatings and the reload spray that is supposed to fortify its durability. So Dimitry! Thanks for the nice review! My question though is, did you try to Machine POLISH the paint after the 840:th wash? ithink many wants to know if it is possible: as these type of coatings bonds to the paint, am i right..? imean at some point you may have the need to, when the 840 wash is starting to show swirls which it will have way before that is my solid guess? ;)
@DmitrysGarage2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I always machine polish the test hood to remove the coating/wax im testing. A machine polish will remove it. I typically use Meguiars pro polishes. For an actual car I will usually machine polish every 3 or so years if the coating holds up. Earlier if it doesn’t.
@BryanDawsonUSA3 жыл бұрын
Dmitry - thank you for the “real world” testing as opposed to pouring acid on the hood to “torture” the coating. You are a legend… at such a young age too. What can we do to amp up the gloss? Can we top it with some other product you rated high on gloss such as Adam's Graphene Ceramic Spray?

Top with P&S Beadmaker after every/other wash and use as a drying aid 👌
@DmitrysGarage3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bryan, really appreciate such a nice comment. I agree about the harsh chem tests, they make no sense. I think gloss is best influenced by a good machine polish. Get the really fine grit going for your last stage/pass and make that paint shine. Some products could help as toppers, but really the biggest gloss gain is physical polishing.

@DmitrysGarage2 жыл бұрын
So I think two is fine to make sure you got all the spots with a nice even coat. However realistically you will want to polish the car again in a few years anyway. Swirls will appear over time, the more careful you are the longer it will take. I typically re-polish within 3 years or if the coating fails sooner.

Really appreciate the dedication and real world applications you take to test these products. I've been using the inexpensive, short term ceramic sprays with decent results, after watching this test, I'm going to invest the money and buy the Adam's kit on Amazon and apply to both my cars. How often should a "reload" coat be applied? Semi-annually? Annually? What Adam's product should be used to top up the graphene coating? Thanks!
@DmitrysGarage2 жыл бұрын
Jason, thank you for the kind words! I’ve been using the Adam’s graphene myself and I’m very happy with it thus far. For the topper/reload/recharge products; It is my opinion they work much like your short term ceramic (silica) sprays. You’re just sealing on top of the coating and the coating will effectively never appear to wear off. I prefer to let the coating do the work and see how well it really holds out. Especially since a huge selling point of coatings is that they eliminate constant waxing/sealing through longevity and durability. Where ill use a reload or silica spray sealant is for high wear area patching and also on surfaces that just don’t hold coating well, like chrome. This lets me extend the life of the coating instead of having to redo the whole car because a few areas are wearing down.

Thanks for watching! I would be surprised if it only lasted 8 months. I have had the less durable spray version on my truck for at least that long now and it's not even close to failing. I would guess such a fast failure is likely a bad install or bad washing methods.

I have had this coating on my '21 Gladiator for 1.5 years now. Yes, it's very durable. With very little maintenance the coating and hydrophobics have held up well. My only complaint is that this coating is not slick at all. Zero slickness. For that reason I am not impressed. This fall I will be compounding the coating off and going with something else.

So far I really haven't found a coating that's very slick. Seems like that is a compromise with coatings. It is definitely a lot slicker than bare paint in testing, but can't compete with some of the spray sealants and even traditional waxes. If you find one you like I'd love to test it.

Thanks, Dimitry! Do you think it's worth coating the windshield with this stuff? My car is garaged and only sees about 5000 miles a year, what's your best guess as to how long before I will need to reapply? I just finished applying it and so far I am VERY pleased with the results. My Touareg has never looked better!

I don't know if your gloss reading test is accurate - I recently coated my car with this product and it is insanely glossy, far more than the several ceramic waxes I have used prior.

Thanks for watching Jake! You have to consider the base gloss of the underlying paint. In my case I’m testing a freshly polished level of gloss. (94GU) as my base. If your paint is less glossy than that it’s more likely a product would boost gloss readings. Furthermore gloss readings are just the amount of reflected light, it only quantifies light readings. A coating can have a very positive visual quality. Often described as wet paint or candy appearance without actually being more glossy in a literal quantifiable way.
