When you spoke about the art of blocking hats, I recalled as a child learning to play the game of Chess; it's a game you can pick up pretty quickly, but mastering Chess is another matter again. I have my Brother in law's pigshooting hat, one he tweaked/fashioned for himself from an Akubra. I love the look of it; but it's a one off. After watching you, I'm encouraged to seek out the base Akubra model, and take it to someone that can fashion another in my BIL's style.

This is why I like my Kangaroo leather hat from Barmah. Between having the venting and not having to worry about the rain, it is the best way for me to be able to wear a hat and not have to worry about blocking it. I do have some hats that do need blocking, but they are not worn as much as the leather hat.

@@CF_Sapper if you bought a commercial hat from a store many have adjustable hat bands on the inside. Otherwise you'd be best to seek out a hatter. They would have to look at the hat and see if it's possible to use a stretcher without damaging it. Also it depends on how far you need to stretch it too.

I was gifted a Resistol Qucksilver (no longer made) in the original box for my birthday. Already the best hat I've owned and I absolutely agree - more people should wear hats. They're a great, functional piece of wardrobe.

I gave up baseball hats years ago. We tend to get a lot of rain and sun. I have been on a Henschel hat kick for a long time. They do not look bad and they are a fantastic "tool" protecting you. The Breezers are my favorite in summer and I go to leather or heavy canvas types in the winter. I have not looked back since.

You may want to get a plastic hat protector like the Troopers use. Scotch guard only works so much. They are excellent and very cheap. This is what a lot of people use on their fancy hats.😉

Hats are such an esoteric area for repair and adjustment, and its amazing that there are resources that you have acquired to such an endeavour. I've just watched the Lighting Ceremony for the Olympics that took place at the ruins of Olympia. Have you ever thought about recreating an Olympic torch? Felt hats have a grain to them. You are only supposed to brush with the grain. Rubbing back and forth like that will loosen the fibers and thin spots out creatng weak spots over time. Over time those thin spots will start to tear and holes will start.

He was pretty sloppy all around, even at the intro, hah. At moments like these, i always think of Jamie, how working with a sloppy Adam can be very grating sometimes, not saying that Jamie is perfect. I used to have a friend that managed to bump into everything and knock things over just by being around objects, and sometimes you just look at that person and go: "...really?" Which i did actually say during this video when he revealed his hat after his 1st fix attempt, seeing how he didn't put it on a flatter surface, like... really? I didn't even know about the felt graining, but it made me think of worn out velcro, like an 80s backcombing hairdo.

That's something I notice about Adam. As qualified as he is about a lot of things - and props to him for trying new things - some things he's really bad at and seems like he won't bow to the professionals. The only silver lining is it's his own hat he's ruining and beating up, not a client or friend. But it's only a matter of time before someone trusts him to repair something a professional should do.

My first job was in a hat shop. I was trained that you should never handle a hat by the crown, only the brim.

It might be worth fabricating (or otherwise acquiring) a more solid block that fits your hat in the way you want it to be. My wife does millinery and we have a lovely collection of vintage blocks as a result. They also display nicely on a shelf.

I made a couple hats, and posted a tutorial for how to make a fedora on the Club Obi Wan forum. As Adam says, it’s easy to try, but experience, preparation (as you can see from Adam’s rush to get his gear together the first time he takes the hat off the steamer) and precision all serve you well. You should also be prepared for some bloody fingertips, as sewing the sweatband, ribbon, and liner can all be difficult. As an aside, I’ve always been told that you should only brush a hat counterclockwise.

I love the idea of taking to a guy who knows exactly what he's doing in a shop that needs the business, but I get learning the skill on your own. There's a neighborhood older gentleman who sharpens knives of all sorts in my area. It's like $5 to have your kitchen knife sharpened, and it's well worth it for expensive knives to not hack at it on your own and let a guy with years of know-how and practice do it for you.

When I was a drill sergeant we would put polyurethane on our campaign hats and let them dry in a hat press to keep them from warping. Added bonus it kept the color from fading too.

I personally prefer the look of the brim looking a bit droopy in the front, but there is a certain polished look to it being perfectly shaped. It's a bit military-esque, or maybe I am thinking of mounties.

i have a few felt fedora hats i wear in the rain, they get thoroughly soaked, never scotch guarded them, i just lay them on a flat towel to dry and they are still in perfect condition

Hi Adam, my personal opinion is that your hat is more fedora-like in nature rather than homburg, which typically has a longitudinal crease on top and no pinch at the front. Fedoras have the pinch at the front and may have the longitudinal crease on top or a wider top shape, like yours has (though not a round top, which would be a pork pie hat). Enjoyed the episode. It's impossible to get nice and cool hats in Scandinavia. I travelled to LA for work, and found a hat shop! I bought 2 giant summer hats to bring home in the plane. It was in a hat shop by the Marina in Long Beach. You should check it out. Hats from floor to celling! Really wonderful hats I wear every summer, cuz my shoulders get sunburned; so I love big summer hats, that can give some shade. America truly have much more hat variety than Europe. I tried looking in London, Paris, Copenhagen, Berlin, Amsterdam, you name it. Hats are hard to find.

My grandfather wore a Stetson. This was in the 50s up to the mid 60s. It wasn't a western style hat and I don't think Stetson makes that style anymore. Would kind of like to get one. Bit of trivia: Go back and look at Kennedy's inauguration. He was wearing a top hat.

A hat with a wide brim is something more people should be wearing. A hat with a brim keeps the sun off ones ears. As one who wears glasses I find wearing a hat beneficial in keeping glare, and rain off my glasses. I don’t understand umbrella’s I wear an Akubra, Cattleman with a chin strap(stampede strap) and have for at least twenty five years. I have been wearing an Akubra hat of one model or another for close to fifty years. Reshaping and sometimes stretching for me usually involves getting the hat thoroughly soaked and then putting the stretcher in it to return the hat size as hats shrink in size with time. Then finding a suitable curved surface to set the hat on to dry.

Try a coffee can. Cut it down, to shorten it, so the brim sets on your flat surface.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't you use a 2 liter bottle to hold the water? Upside down so when the water level gets below the lip of the bottle water comes out and refills the reservoir till it reaches the lip again.

Get a cavalry hat. It has holes for a chin (or neck) strap. I used to wear one with mine around the back of the neck, like US drill instructors, this will deal with most wind, except from the front unless you lean your head a little forward and downward. In a storm or other "extreme" conditions move it forward as a chin strap.

Someone else has already mentioned the thing about brushing with the grain, so I don't have to! 🙂 I'm a Danish viewer (who can't afford a membership, sorry) and I have been wearing a Stetson black cavalry type hat whenever I go outdoors, since 2008. (Still the same hat.) I wonder if you (as you are also a red-blonde and possibly have the same skin type as me) have any advice on getting rid of greasy sweat stains and salt deposits? And perhaps also how to refresh the dye, so it gets back its black color? Maybe other viewers have some advice? There seems to be noone in Denmark who cleans hats, unfortunately. I made the mistake when I started wearing it 16 years ago, not to protect it with something like Scotch-guard, and the summer of 2008 had a few very rainy days, which I spent one of walking through most of Copenhagen...this washed out quite a bit of the dye. And daily use for - wow, I can almost not believe it - 16 years means it has wicked up quite a bit of skin oils. (Oh well, I could of course pretend that it is a form of waterproof treatment.) Other than this problem, the hat is in great shape, so I really see no need to replace it with a new one. I would be thankful for any advice, I am sure the has to be somebody here who is likely to know something about the matter. Greetings from Aaarhus, Jutland (Denmark)!

I would guess the airport workers aren't allowed to wear hats due to the wind possibly blowing them off and ending up in a plane engine. I guess they could get around it with a mandatory policy of some kind of chin strap or cord attached to their shirt etc.

This is a skill that all Australian soldiers have. Keeping your slouch hat in good condition starts off as a pain in the proverbial requirement and later turns into a source of pride.... of course, it's all about the perfect balance between flat enough to keep the RSM off your back and having enough character to make it a true "slouch hat"
