Adam Savage’s Tested

Күн бұрын

Adam finally gets up close to one of the rare surviving spacesuits from Ridley Scott's Prometheus, with helmet made by the specialty costumers at FBFX! Its details show the progression of design of spacesuits from the Alien universe, and reflect the modern fabrication technologies that allow for practical lighting in the helmet. We also take a look at a space helmet from the 1981 film Outland, which was also designed by John Mollo!

Those dome visors have held up really well. I worked for the company who made them in the UK like 11/12 years ago. They are resin cast and hand sanded to be completely fault free. We spent hours on each one to sand them perfect. My hands were so sore at the end of every day. We had a couple of moulds and we made 60+ of those domes and a bunch of breack away ones. The breakaway ones were driven from Birmingham to pinewood so be filmed as quickly as possible. As the resin set too hard to be broken within 2 hours. The silicone molds for them were some of the most complex molds I've ever seen as the domes had to be one piece. And the opening is narrower than the widest point. There is a good chance that I worked on that dome. I hand sanded at least 12 and helped trim flashing of a further 25. I love the Alien franchise, so I absolutely lost my mind when I got to work on this.

I enjoyed it a whole bunch, saw the initial release( digital projection) then saw it again when there was a 35mm showing, and saw it again when it was shown in 70mm 3D at our IMAX theatre. I think people will look back at it more fondly with age like I hope more people do with Alien 3.

The "Outland" helmet's crudeness fits the film because it was (if memory serves me) a mining operation, so Big Biz being what it is universally, they'd have the crudest, most stripped-down space suits they could.

@kutter_ttl6786

We have to take into consideration the context the suits were made for. The Prometheus suits are for a well funded scientific expedition, they would most likely have the most advanced equipment for their time. In Alien we're looking at a mining operation. A suit that is simple, utilitarian and designed to take more abuse would be more consistent with the work involved.

Good correction to make; the same confusion occurred when Adam examined "Life" space suits in London a few months ago, where the EVA helmet and electronics were FBFX, but the rest of the EVA and entirety of the IVA were Robert Allsopp and... you! [Sadly the video has since been set to private for some reason.] FBFX deserves plenty of credit, but so too do you guys. Robert Allsopp and Ivo Coveney are both so insanely accomplished; I happily got to meet Allsopp at a con a few years back, and I hope to one day meet Coveney (especially since I think I own a piece of his work). And your stuff is very impressive; my compliments especially on your beautiful helmets and masks.

Having air blow across the faceplate to keep them from fogging is not a new trick. The MKV dive helmet and many of its predecessors are designed with internal air moving across the windows (lights) to keep them from fogging. Same thing with AGAs, the EXO-26, Kirby-Morgans, Ocean Reef FFM, etc. The technology dates back over 100 years... 1840s.
