Tell Adam that there's magnetic peg supports you can magnetically adhere to metal cabinets, such as the yellow cubes in the shot, where the electrical tape can go. The usual suspects have them. I'd go for the 10 peg in-line ones with the neodymium magnets. The ones with four round magnet pucks specifically. I've hung about a kilo on one to test and it didn't even so much as blink.

you know I remember years ago you mentioned trying to find some hyper thin velcro and I think I found the ultimate version of it but never sent it to you. its an industrial floor velcro tape, retailers use carpet tiles, with velcro on the backing as an alternative to gluing the carpet down, and the tape you adhere to the floor so the tiles stick are insanely thin. very aggressive hooks. I still have a photo of the label on the box, but have not been able to locate a consumer variant. it was produced by the ykk company that makes zippers. always intended to send you some but I do not have access to the supply I used to. its worth looking into tho!

This video brings me such joy. First, that Adam can be so excited over something so "simple" as hook and loop fasteners - the variations on it, storing it separately (I've never done that, but will totally do it now), and just that it is such an integral part of his work. Second, Adam using the phrase "dogs and cats living together" to denote absolute chaos. I've used it similarly ever since Ghostbusters even though I've had a dog and cat household over the years and the dogs and cats typically got along better than the cats with each other.

"3M Dual Lock" Is some impressive stuff that's got incredible hold strength. Definitely more mechanical connection than standard hook and loop but far stronger from my experience.

Went straight to the comments to look for this, utilized in the AV realm a lot, lots of contractors I know use it too! It can be quite thick, but only needing 'one side' for each end is quite handy - great for items that get removed and replaced a bunch too

Adam some of the most profound self discovery experience I've ever had had to be the times when I was able optimize my shop layout in a way that seems obvious now but was never considered before. I think a really cool idea for storage in a space with tall ceilings is something like a mini "Paternoster Lift" (Neverending elevator). I've never seen it done. But it anyone can do it it's Adam. I've seen similar systems more like a revolver cylinder with long short boxes, but they have a large footprint. A Paternoster could have a small footprint but go as high as you want theoretically.

I staple a strip of double sided velcro ( 6 inches or longer, ) to all my extension cords , air hoses, and corded tool cords. Wrap it around the cord and secure with a couple of staples. Buy it in rolls at menardes etc.

hook and loop is interesting and variable stuff. If you make a guitar pedal board you want the glue to be MUCH stronger than the hooks, but you don't want the hooks so strong you can't get them apart. The best is 3M Dual Lock Reclosable Fasteners. It's the most secure, has good glue, but can be separated with a dull knife fairly easily.

@@douglascaskey7302 Yeah, they are called 3M Dual-Lock. The key is the glue is strong enough, and if you put a spatula or dull knife in they split apart easier than hook and loop but are strong in shear and tension. So it holds really well until you want it apart.

About hook and loop. I like the german version we add most of our word for Burdock (Klette) to what could be best translated to fastener (Verschluss). It's a Burdockfastener (Klettverschluss)!

I think viewing a workshop as just another machine is a really great metaphor. It matches exactly how I think about my little workspace as well. It's a machine that's central to many of the things I do. Sometimes it fits well with into my workflow and works together with my other machines and sometimes it's not the right machine for the job or requires modification. In any case I am the worlds foremost expert on *my* shop and as such can fix whatever is broken or in need of change. Idk, I don't really have anything to add, I just really liked that comparison.

Ive recommended cheapo, dollar-store ziplock plastic bags for sorting out ones 'box of computer wires' to my friends and i think it would help your hook and loop situation. Keeping everything smoothly separated, preventing sticking/tangling and yet still immediately identifiable is such a boon. Yes, its an extra step, but for stuff you don't access daily, i think it would be worth it.

Ziplock sandwich bags have many drawbacks. 1) they have no structure and are flimsy to handle 2) they don't stand up on their own 3) it takes two hands to open the zipper 4) zippers aren't always reliable 5) when open, requires a extra hand to stay open enough to fit something inside

I find E6000 an excellent replacement for the sketchy glue that comes on the back of Velcro. This works especially well for attaching things to my company truck’s plastic dashboard. The E6000 sticks very well, is slightly flexible, and (depending on the material) peels off when no longer needed.

About velcro / hook and loop - one thing i use very often i doublesided strips (hook on one side, loop on the flip side). Works wonders with cable management. Though i have to admit i like the swedish word for velcro strip better. It´s called burdock strip, which translates to kardborreband. Most likely becaused of the little burdock balls propensity to stick to clothes...

Like me in a factory, making things that I need at that moment out of cardboard and coroplast. Things that we recycle and have an abundance of. Most of which gets dismantled by management and more long term less efficient but similar things appear in longer term materials. Whether its just a table so I don't have to bend over as far to get some tape. Or a roof over expensive equipment to divert rain dripping from a sky light, so it can be protected, but used. where unused and a bucket would suffice.

Hey Adam! I am a long-time, hudge fan, but I will admit, my dad is probably your number one fan. He absolutely LOVES to make wood crafts, and he has recently started getting into resin projects. He is currently trying to make a project involving both resin and wood, but he is having some issues with the resin soaking into the wood. I was wondering if you have any tips or tricks? He is trying to fill in a shape cut out of the wood with resin.

I think you need a third drawer Adam... You have forgotten to mention the other type of hook and loop. The kind that has both on the same strip like, for instance, the cable management strips that are loop on top and hook on the back so that when you wrap it around something it sticks to itself.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Also, according to Velcro you shouldn't call it Velcro, it's "VELCRO Brand hook and loop fastener" (i.e Velcro is the name of the company, not the product. Of course the original inventor named it Velcro so what do they know ;-)

Of course you know, per the certainties of Murphy’s Law, the split second you move the molding vacuum to someplace off in a corner, it will suddenly become somehow critical for something!😂 My father had a massive workshop and it was absolutely an organic construct. Tools/materials would flow from the nearly inaccessible spots at the back to more readily positions for a few months and then drift to the back again when they weren’t immediately needed depending on his current projects. The only fixed points in all those years were the really large heavy items like table saw, standing drill press, etc---everything else had a ebb and flow of location, but he always knew where every item was at any time.

Hook and loop story. My Boy Scout troop one of the fathers of one of the other kids worked for a fire truck company. At some point in the state of our patrol boxes with noticed the boxes that house the stove and cooking utensils etc. It was offered and the offer was accepted. we were made beautiful metal throop patrol boxes4 of them 3 patrols and 1 for the leaders. They were complete with hinged door that doubled as a counter with locks legs that were made of pipes that wind taken off slid in latched and acted as handles on the top they were lightweight from the aluminum and everything was powder coated green if I remember right. The box consisted of two sections with one shelf in the middle and all our kitchen supplies could stay in them. They even included a cutting board that was attached with Velcro and this was supposedly they're really good fancy stuff. That is until one cold morning on a winter camping trip in upstate New York..... Slowly the Velcro started to do de laminate the adhesive from the surface. Not soon after that are cutting boards were no longer Velcro in place and they were just stored on top of the stove. The only other problem we had with occasionally the key lock to open the door would get jammed up or the he would break off. Otherwise they were great and everybody went oooo when they saw them. They were also a whole lot lighter than the really heavy wood ones we had. So if you do something with a adhesive backed Velcro make sure that it can stand the temperatures that you're going to use it in and that it adheres to the surface that you're going to put it on.

There is some insanely strong 'hook and loop' variants. So what if you added it onto a magnet so you can attach things to metal objects with hook and loop without the risk of leaving adhesive marks and allows quick adjustments and re-use :o

Always love seeing how you store things, one thing that I struggle with a lot is glues, epoxies, grease etc. that comes in smallish tubes. I like to keep it in my chemicals closet as that makes sense in my mind, but they never have a good way to store smaller stuff like glue bottles. How do you store smaller things like that in your cave?

Actually what drives me nuts is Adam's ADHD... I can see how he probably drove Jamie nuts. But I do get the loop / hook thing. 🙃I also would have made that whole section drawers, and put the damn "apple crates" anywhere else... like maybe the garbage. 🙄
